Markoff··on Spain train crash: 'At least 10 dead' in high-speed collision
> ABC is American, not sure why you'd claim this is a Spanish newspaper.

I have no words for stupidity of some commenters here...

"ABC (Spanish: [aˈβeθe]) is a Spanish national daily newspaper. Along with El Mundo and El País, it is one of Spain's three newspapers of record."

"ABC was first published in Madrid on 1 January 1903[1][2] by Torcuato Luca de Tena y Álvarez-Ossorio.[3][4] The founding publishing house was Prensa Española, which was led by the founder of the paper, Luca de Tena.[4] The paper started as a weekly newspaper, turning daily in June 1905.[5] In 1928, ABC had two editions, one for Madrid and the other for Seville.[4][6] The latter was named ABC de Sevilla.[4]"

"ABC is the longest-running national newspaper in Spain. With clear roots in its founding values, it constantly evolves, adapting to technological innovations and social changes to offer the best information offer"

It is also 4th biggest in Spain by circulation

if you open one of the biggest newspapers in Spain they report already 50 dead

So thanks for giving me downvotes just because you use outdated news sources!

Markoff··on Spain train crash: 'At least 10 dead' in high-speed collision
more like 46 dead already

so much for European safety, now compare it to volumes on Chinese HSR and number of deaths there compared to Spain

edit: inconvenient truth for downvoters?

50 according one of the biggesr Spanish newspapers, just open the homepage, you can read 50 even in Spanish

https://www.abc.es

so thanks everyone for downvotes just because you use slow news sources or deny the truth EU high speed trains are extremely dangerous compared to China on deaths/volume

Markoff··on EU prosecutors still have questions for von der Leyen over Pfizergate
Ursula von der Leyen has not yet provided an in-person statement to the European Public Prosecutor's Office for its investigation into the procurement of coronavirus vaccines, according to an individual involved in the effort who was granted anonymity to speak freely.

In 2024, EPPO took over the Belgian-led probe into alleged criminal wrongdoing in connection with vaccine negotiations between the European Commission chief and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla. Prosecutors have been investigating von der Leyen for "interference in public functions, destruction of SMS, corruption and conflict of interest," according to legal documents seen by POLITICO.

Asked to respond to the assertion that von der Leyen has failed to provide a statement on the so-called Pfizergate affair, Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said: "The Commission has demonstrably cooperated extensively with EPPO to clarify facts and assess events."

"This was always done on behalf of and with the full support of the President. The President has always been, and continues to be, very cooperative in answering to any open questions — within the limits of her duties and her availability as President of the Commission.”

In an interview with POLITICO, EPPO chief prosecutor Laura Codruța Kövesi, who wraps up her seven-year tenure on Friday, said she has on multiple occasions dealt with EU officials who refused to answer summons from her office. “Some politicians think that they are above the law,” she said. “If you are called in for a statement, you have to come.”

She added: "I will not be shy to tell you that especially when important people are involved in the investigation — be it high-profile politicians or rich people who are connected to the political class, we have difficulties in exercising our competence."

When asked whether von der Leyen was one of the officials in question, Kövesi said she wouldn't comment on specific investigations.

It is much easier to pick up fruit with zero skills and you can eat it it raw compared to rats/pigeons + it scales with no issues, there is enough fruit for everyone.

technically fruit would be free in tropical countries all year round, though in somewhere like Europe you would need to preserve it (drying would be cheapest long term preservation)

Markoff··on The Real Kevin Bacon
Timothy chalamet or Jennifer Lawrence were famous in their 20s and seems to be doing ok (not DiCaprio level, but still), so they have for sure better opportunity to improve their remoteness score than Moretz, maybe Tom Holland stand a chance as well
Markoff··on The Real Kevin Bacon
I knew only Moretz from Kickass movies, but that's it and honestly it's not surprising

even the now famous actors were hardly famous in their 20's, from recent actors Jennifer Lawrence, Timothy chalamet or DiCaprio, from older James dean or marlon Brando, so it's actually very rare to see actor who is famous at young age and remains famous even later, only very few can pull that, they are either famous as young or as old, almost nobody transition successfully from being famous as child or at young age to latter years

Will this affect Shizuku + InstallerX Revived? I mean worst case I will disable gapps or even better finally unlock my Xiaomi bootloader, in the last 15 years I've had unlocked bootloader (or at least root) on pretty much every single device, it was just too troublesome to unlock Xiaomi though there is already offline workaround so might as well do it finally.

Markoff··on Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash
I am using airbnb only for family vacations in summer for 7+ days minimum, they offer way better prices than local hotels plus I can cook or dine at home (which you can't really do in hotel, so I don't get people complaining here about doing dishes and comparing it to hotel experience) without wasting time/money on restaurants (plus there are not really hotels in locations I prefer).

I try to leave airbnb in exact same condition as it was upon our arrival (obviously I am not washing sheets). After reading comments here I feel weird or is this difference between Americans and Europeans? Do HN readers like to live like pigs to stay in mess and leave mess after themselves?

edit: I checked my airbnb receipts and I see everywhere only Airbnb service fee, there is no extra cleaning fee on any of them, if they charged extra money for some cleaning fee maybe my approach would be different

Markoff··on NixOS is making me less afraid
yeah, so it's not like Linux is better, but you have now personal assistant to help you, not sure if that's benefit of Linux

I remember trying to remap keys in Linux Mint and install Chinese language keyboard were both major PITA requiring Claude/ChatGPT, while on Windows I could do it without any help in few minutes (the keyboard in seconds)

Markoff··on AfD Leak: What 421,179 Hacked Emails Show about the German Far Right
> Hypothetically, should a party running on a platform of ending democracy be allowed to participate in democracy?

I think any party not encouraging others to commit violence should be allowed to run, if majority of all voters don't want democracy, it should be their right to vote for such party, which wants to end democracy. Democracy is here for the people/voters, not vice versa, it should have no self-preservation mechanisms, if it has it's not really an democracy anymore, if opinion of majority of the people is not respected to preserve it.

> Should they be allowed to end it for all future and current citizens?

Well, look at the Brexit referendum, it's kinda same thing.

Markoff··on Europe EV sales rose 70.3% in September, 32.6% of market share
while I dont have car and use with family everywhere public transport, this is a bit too strict, it would be easier to just not allow registering car unless you own your own private parking space/garage, that would already extinguish like 80-90% of the cars and solve most of the problems plus make public parking like 10EUR/hour and people will think twice whether to use the car

currently YEARLY parking fee in Prague is like 50EUR (for one Prague district where you register) while annual public transport pass cost 150EUR, what a joke, that's one way to discourage people from using public transport, at very least parking fee should cost at minimum same as public transport, where you can't buy some shared family pass, but each member of family has to cough up 150EUR, kids over 15 like 75EUR, so if you have two teenagers it will cost your family 450EUR compared to 50EUR for car all of you can share
