MatthewDP··on Show HN: Hipster Domain Finder
side.bar is available, not bad.
MatthewDP··on Google Rolls Out Its Panda Update Internationally
One of my sites (U.S.) got hit by this update today. It seems that it's more than just an expansion of the existing algorithm, but it looks like the use of site-blocking data will have real impact.
MatthewDP··on Minnesota’s First Tech Accelerator Now Taking Applications
Nice to see some more start-up activity in the mid-west!
MatthewDP··on Sony CEO Accidentally Reveals Secret Details About iPhone 5
Anyone want to bet that the iPhone 5 ends up not having a Sony camera in it? This reminds me of the CEO of the publishing company that blurted out about the iPad days before it was going to be released.
MatthewDP··on Craigslist has been disrupted
This argument relies on Quantcast data that's not directly measured. When sites such as Compete, Quantcast and Alexa take a stab at measuring site traffic without direct measurement (like Google Analytics), the estimates they come up with are always way, way off. Unless there's better evidence that Craigslist traffic is declining, I don't buy it.
MatthewDP··on Poll: Do you work for "the Man"?
I AM the man. :-)
MatthewDP··on Chris Ziegler Is Leaving Engadget
Another one bites the dust.
MatthewDP··on Poll: How much do you average per freelancing gig?
I usually charge $75-$100 an hour for .NET development (in the midwest).
MatthewDP··on Ask HN: Please destroy my startup idea so I don't waste time on it
I have a small but growing daily stock-related newsletter (3500 subscribers in 45 days). So far, I really have no methods of monetizing it and the monthly sendgrid bill doesn't pay itself. If that service existed, I'd give it a try.
MatthewDP··on Armies of Expensive Lawyers, Replaced by Cheaper Software
This thing reads like a press release... Sponsored post?
MatthewDP··on Pictures of kittens for use as placeholders in your designs or code
Free Kitten Wallpapers: http://placekitten.com/1920/1080 or http://placekitten.com/1280/1024 http://placekitten.com/1024/768 etc.
MatthewDP··on Google Forecloses on Content Farms with "Farmer" Algorithm Update
I wish.
MatthewDP··on Google Forecloses on Content Farms with "Farmer" Algorithm Update
One of Mahalo's "pride and joy" results was "How to Play Guitar". They were #2 for a while, now they're 5-6.
MatthewDP··on GroupOn, LivingSocial engaging in questionable practices
Not to mention you can always get 20% off FTD if you do a google search for a coupon.
MatthewDP··on Are We In Inflationary Part of Internet Financing Bubble? 2011 = 1997?
if(2011 == 1997) { System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000 * 60 * 60 * 24 * 52 * 3); Bubble.Burst(); }
MatthewDP··on Firefox 4, 5, 6 and 7 to be released before the end of 2011
Does it seem like Mozilla is lowering the bar as to what will constitute an integer release (4.0, 5.0, etc.)? It was July 2008 when FireFox 3.0 came out, 19 months later, 4.0 hasn't come out yet.
MatthewDP··on AOL buys Huffington Post for $315mm in cash
Is HuffPo really worth 7-8 times what AOL paid for Weblogs, Inc. and TechCrunch?
MatthewDP··on Xoom costs more than the iPad, so what?
There's a reason why the Wii did so well out of the gate, despite being far behind technically. With an $800 price point and a data plan attached, the Xoom is a non-starter.
MatthewDP··on [dead]
Agree. GoDaddy is horrible, especially when they try to up-sell you. No one should have to pay extra for "domain privacy". It shouldn't be too much to ask to just buy a domain without having to say no to a hundred different offers.
MatthewDP··on Pair programming is not the best way to learn from a pet project
I would agree with the author. Pair programming just isn't practical. You've got two developers working on the same problem, but at a much slower pace than either of them would be if they were working on there own. It's much better for one developer to work on a piece of code and then have the other review it after a day or two of work.
MatthewDP··on Ask HN: Acquisition interest in my part-time startup
I can answer a bit on the tax situation (IANAA). The whole deal would be taxable at your marginal tax rate, minus whatever your basis would be. Your basis would be any money that you put into the business. Since it would be additional income that would be taxed at a personal rate, you would be well to sack everything you can away on a tax deferred basis (IRA, 401ks, 529 plans for kids) to avoid a beating on taxes.
MatthewDP··on Co-Founders: Your Idea is Worthless. Show Your Chops
The article brings a valid point. If you're a wanna-be entrepreneur and all you have an idea, that's not nearly enough.
MatthewDP··on Start Small, Stay Small
I listened to the audio-book of Start Small, Stay Small and am a big fan of Rob's podcasts "Startups for the Rest of Us". They have great insight into launching niche SAAS products, but not so much for startups looking for VC funding.
