Maxion··on Fujifilm to boost tape production 5x as AI fuels archiving demand
I suspect very very few companies have cold storage backups.
Maxion··on Mystery of 60-Second Fluctuations in Power Grids Solved
That still lands it at the top of the minute, which is AFAIK the pattern the researchers found.
Maxion··on What we know so far about Spain train crash
Sometimes code gets in the way. E.g. in the school I went to growing up they had to have firealarms in all kind of closets and storage rooms. We got at least once per semester a firealarm when some teacher went in to sort stuff due to the dust.
Maxion··on The US added a record 20.2 GWh of battery storage in just 3 months
To capture it? Quite a few I'd imagine. The energy you could collect though from one hit is quite low.
Maxion··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
FWIW a brass macbook would be pretty dope
Maxion··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
Thanks oleg! I have, but have been lazy and not yet showed up :D
Maxion··on SS United States to be sunk as largest artificial reef
Huh, that's a lot more affordable than I thought. I think I'd prefer an inside cabin anyway, on a ship like that you don't really wanna spend time in the cabin.
Maxion··on SS United States to be sunk as largest artificial reef
Definitely can't afford that, this is going to be one of those life regrets I think that I won't be able to do.
Maxion··on Code-execution flaw in UEFI firmware threatens most servers on planet Earth
I've been thinking similarly, that we're quickly going to want to start minimising dependencies and code size in the programs we make to try to reduce attack surface area.
Maxion··on Early progress on accelerating drug development with Claude
Claude, make me a baby. Make no mistakes.

> Automating or streamlining human/animal trials with 24/7 monitoring and AI check-ins would be huge.

Yikes

Maxion··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
Mainly thinking 48V as that is already a standard in the marine and automotive world. AFAIK 120V DC is not a commonly used standard ? (Maybe in aviation?)
Maxion··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
In lower latitudes, yes. Where I live December has an average of 4 hours of sunlight (yes, the entire month).
Maxion··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
With enough renewables the cost peaks are in the morning and evening when the sun is rising/setting and people are at home cooking.
Maxion··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
Spain suffered a black out partially due to the lack of momentum (spinning generators).

For Europe to get rid of more fossils without putting the grid at risk we will need more storage.

Maxion··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
Yep, I live in Finland where we are quite far ahead of the curve when it comes to renewables and nuclear. This is one large problem. When it's winter and cold and dark, solar does not help. Wind only helps when its windy.

Batteries are coming, and will solve it, but it will still take time for them to be come cheap enough.

Only once we have ~7 days of storage (~100 GWh of storage) will we be able to get rid of the last fossil plants.

Maxion··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
AFAIK problem with all physical energy storage solutions is just one of cost.

Batteries are scheduled to become so cheap that these type of physical storage systems just won't be able to keep up in terms of cost.

Most pumped hydro projects are now put on hold as batteries have been coming down.

Maxion··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
Installation labour cost and inverter cost are now the largest expenses.

I wonder if as panel costs goes down, will people start to wire their homes again for 48V DC? You could conceivably run your HVAC and fridges at least off of it, this would negate the need for a larger (more costly) inverter.

Maxion··on The Exponential Time Hypothesis Is False [pdf]
Either that or they've not put the model(s) on those problems. Remember that even the Navier-Stokes solution did use a large amount of compute. I'm not sure they'd even want to waste it on problems that they can't get PR from.
Maxion··on New iPad mini
> Does the page look and feel glued to your finger as you scroll?

Yes, for me issues with apps have mainly been in poorly optimized code causing lag, slow loading and the like. The 60hz/120hz thing has never really been a practical issue.

Maxion··on New iPad mini
I've never understood the 120hz hype. Sure it looks a tiny bit better, but I'd trade that in a heartbeat for more battery.
Maxion··on Amazon’s “digital pacifier” for toddlers
> You could teach them to read. My mother taught me to read when I was four before I went to school at five.

This only works for particularly gifted kids.

Maxion··on Amazon’s “digital pacifier” for toddlers
I'd say the main reason for this is how much more complex life has become. In the past basic life for a normal person was quite simple. Now it requires much more from a person to handle the basic necessities in life.
Maxion··on Amazon’s “digital pacifier” for toddlers
People just continued on with their chores and let their kids run about. Kids were way less supervised and were allowed to be on their own. As another poster said, physical punishment was also very common.

> their chances of getting ADHD diagnosis

ADHD is an executive functioning disorder with mainly genetic causes, it is not something that you can parent a kid out of, or in to.

With lifestyle changes to you can manage it, or make it worse. But you don't cause it, or prevent it from happening from letting kids use tablets.

Maxion··on Amazon’s “digital pacifier” for toddlers
Another big part of this is the lack of support structures. As a family we need to get things done, toddlers often prevent that. When there's no grandparent who is able to be there and help watch the kids, what really is the alternative?
Maxion··on We should be more ambitious with the software we build
> Even if its closed on their end, having standards is the key.

Good standards are often (all of the time?) ignored by bad developers.

Maxion··on No more icons in every menu by default
No, most people do not user their computer with 30" external screens. Perhaps developers at FAANGs do, but most people are mobile devices, follow by 13" or 15" laptop screens. Older people often use larger font sizes or browser zoom on top of that (or both).
Maxion··on No more icons in every menu by default
This weird love of negative space is particularly aggravating. Even when you're zoomed out you end up seeing nothing of note, then add in a 133% zoom and now you're reading a paragraph of text, scrolling horisontally and menus cover 75% of the viewport.
Maxion··on There isn't an easy exploit for this PHP vulnerability
I ain't paid to find exploits in PHP, but I will be fired if our shit gets hacked. So I'm taking down the servers until there's a patch.
