MaysonL··on Celebrating 70 Years of Fortran
I’m still amazed that the first dozen programs I ever wrote back in 1963 for an IBM 7090 (or 7094) ran first time. (They were trivial programs). I’m also still pissed that I never got to debug the 13th, in FAP (Fortran Assembly Program), which had a minor syntax error – a comma instead of a period, or vice versa. NASA had just launched a weather satellite, which monopolized computer time, leaving zero minutes for high school students.

MaysonL··on Silicon Valley sees AI as the solution – for everyone else
A bug in the scriptlet I used to post it, which truncated the title as “Silicon Valley sees AI as the solution – for everyone els...”, which I didn’t notice had dropped the third line of the title.
MaysonL··on Why thinking out loud with someone beats thinking alone
Then again, different people’s minds work very differently. My verbal SAT was low 790’s, yet some of my best thinking is purely kinesthetic.
MaysonL··on Why thinking out loud with someone beats thinking alone
Different people’s minds work very differently. More differently than most people imagine.

MaysonL··on I Fired Google
It blocked me, because I was running an ad-blocker. Then I got around the block. Safari’s Reader mode is often useful.
MaysonL··on What we lost when we stopped letting kids leave the front yard
I remember walking the last couple miles of the Garden State Parkway a week or two before it opened. Could a youngster do such a thing today?

After checking the Wikipedia page, I realized that I was only 10 or 11 at the time. Somehow I remembered it as having been older – high school age.

MaysonL··on Apple reports second quarter results
Actually, the product they should build is an ebike. They should buy Weel.[1]

MaysonL··on The Illuminated Man: an unconventional portrait of JG Ballard
Note that the title is probably an allusion to Ray Bradbury’s collection “The Illustrated Man”.
MaysonL··on Brands got worse on purpose
And, before major purchases, check to make sure that private equity firm has not bought them.
MaysonL··on Apple ignores DMA interoperability requests and contradicts own documentation
First iPhone had no App Store: no third-party apps.
MaysonL··on Tim Cook's Impeccable Timing
Apple _is_ a software company: everything it sells is based on a Mac OS X foundation.
MaysonL··on Stanford report highlights growing disconnect between AI insiders and everyone
“Make people want something, and sell it to them”.
MaysonL··on Expanding Swift's IDE Support
Is there an open—source Swift IDE that can modify itself without restarting? (written in Swift) I loved Oberon µSystems Oberon/F aka Component Pascal for that capability.

Or am I going to have to vibe-code one.

MaysonL··on We haven't seen the worst of what gambling and prediction markets will do
“The best way to predict the future is to invent it.”

MaysonL··on Trump's global tariffs struck down by US Supreme Court
I remember being shocked, albeit not surprised, when I read that he had quite a lot of contact with Ron de Santis.

MaysonL··on Circular Buffer
Back in the early ‘70s, I worked at a computer network that had remote clients up and doen the Eastern seabboard, from Maine to D.C. They used a circular buffer for output from client submitted jobs. One day the buffer lapped itself. Panic ensued.
MaysonL··on My Conversation with Stacey Abrams
The substack app really sucks. It tries to make me turn on notifications with a fullscree modal.
