Meerax··on [dead]
First Full-Scale, 3D-Printed Reactor Module Produced
Meerax··on Google Calendar removed events like Pride and BHM; retains Black Friday
I suppose disregarding whatever the original foot kissing may have been, does it cause any harm to acknowledge these things publicly on calendars?
Meerax··on Group1 Unveils First Potassium-Ion Battery in 18650 Format
From Wikipedia "Heavy crop production rapidly depletes the soil of potassium, and this can be remedied with agricultural fertilizers containing potassium, accounting for 95% of global potassium chemical production". ---For this to replace lipo yeah there would need to be a BIG a shift
Meerax··on Boeing Starliner launches first crewed mission
Bear in mind they still need to return the astronauts safely to touchdown.
Meerax··on Personal 'invisibility shield' goes on sale, starting under $70
You would need to consider altered flight characteristics and maybe reduced flight range with the addition. Might act as a sail and just drag any drone around enough as to render it useless. Also, what would a 4ft flying panel look like on radar.
Meerax··on I taught the Iliad to Chinese teenagers (2021)
Any movie (or generally any artistic creation) can change the audience. But Snakes on a Plane might not hit the same as say The Wages of Fear.

Wikis for those not familiar https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wages_of_Fear https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snakes_on_a_Plane

Meerax··on EPA orders Norfolk Southern to conduct all cleanup actions related to derailment
Our rail infrastructure is abysmal. Nationalizing it is perhaps not the way to go, but a serious change needs to happen. Speaking as a former Ohioan who grew up in the Ohio river valley.
Meerax··on Emergency declared and curfew imposed following North Carolina power grid attack
Just guessing (hoping?) here but perhaps attempts on these are being made and just caught early enough that we can all remain happily oblivious.
Meerax··on New type of ultraviolet light makes indoor air as safe as outdoors
Edit to preface: Forgive the potentially naive question but -what happens when some form of bacteria (or something) evolves in a way that renders it hardy enough to survive far-uvc? The article mentioned it's ability to destroy superbugs..just wondering if any thought has been given to unintended side effects like this.
Meerax··on China censors online Ukraine debate, bars calls for peace
Apologies if this is an incredibly naive question: How aware are people in China of what has been censored from them? I've heard of 'tank man' as a common example of this. Students studying/traveling abroad from China encounter the imagery and western take on events and have just never heard of it before.
Meerax··on Starship is threatening NASA’s moon contractors
The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress reference?
Meerax··on Daylight saving time is 'not helpful' and has 'no upsides,' experts say
"I think more people would bemoan the lack of after-work daylight during spring and summer than currently bemoan the switch" I think this argument would also apply nicely in challenge of our concept of a modern work week. '9-5' got a harsh reality check with COVID for a lot of people, so why don't we challenge it and not just shifting DST. (I acknowledge that this currently only applies to people who could work remotely.)
Meerax··on Unmanned submarine earmarked for Irish Sea freight crossings
> But what kind of cargo will the submarine be carrying? "That's what we're going to figure out over the next few months," he told the BBC's Good Morning Ulster programme.

Sounds like a solution looking for a problem.

Meerax··on Many Americans not aware of being tracked with facial recognition while shopping
I wonder how useful facial recognition is to companies when so many people have been wearing masks.
Meerax··on A dwarf planet coming within 11 AU of the sun over the next 10 years
Is this something we could plan and manage to launch an orbiter/lander to in time? Has anyone thought about the possibility of slapping something like a telescope on that and letting it beam back data and images from veryyyyy far out eventually?
Meerax··on VW Will Sell You Self-Driving for $8.50/Hour Someday. Too High or Too Low?
Again with buying a product and having to pay extra to rent/lease capabilities already baked in? Is there some parallel here to the right to repair arguments with John Deere?
Meerax··on Daisugi, the 600-year-old Japanese technique of growing trees out of other trees
"Deru kugi wa utareru" I believe? This is something cultural that continues to surprise me in the ways it manifests in society. Speaking as an American though I really can't be throwing stones.
Meerax··on Archaeologists Solve Mystery of 5,600-Year-Old Skull Found in Italian Cave
"The analysis found evidence of some kind of procedure, possibly a surgery, performed on the woman when she was alive. The team posits that someone applied a red ocher pigment around the injury, possibly for therapeutic or symbolic purposes." I will never cease to be amazed by these ancient examples of assumed surgeries. However, it would be nice if the article expanded more on that or left a key to accompany the photo of highlighted areas on the skull.
Meerax··on Spaceship Earth
Would you mind elaborating on your first sentence a bit more? I personally feel that the tools we create and lessons we learn to be able to live on Mars could be a tremendous benefit to us and Earth.
Meerax··on Tokyo public schools will stop forcing students to dye their hair black (2019)
So pairing this with a quote from the article “Students are encouraged to have black hair to serve as a visible signal that they are willing to adapt to society,” makes it feel like accepting societal norms isn't just encouraged it's almost a fascist doctrine? I'm assuming then that phrases like "celebrate diversity" are frowned upon. Edit: I just wanted to add that having not grown up in a non-individualistic society these things feel very unusual to me. My comparison to fascism is a bit hyperbolic and not meant to offend, apologies all round. I'm leaving it instead of deleting purely for the sake of discussion.
Meerax··on Tokyo public schools will stop forcing students to dye their hair black (2019)
Or even genetic subtext perhaps?
Meerax··on Tokyo public schools will stop forcing students to dye their hair black (2019)
I had absolutely no idea this was part of the dress code.

"The ostensible reason for the rule is that almost all Japanese people have naturally black hair, and so they’ll only have non-black hair if they’ve chosen to dye it a different color."

Are there any children currently enrolled in Tokyo public schools that are of say european ancestry with blonde hair that needed to follow this rule?

Meerax··on Establishment of a closed artificial ecosystem to ensure human survival on moon
Aren't Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos both interested in this and their combined wealth around $200Billion? Seems like they have plenty of money to throw at this company even without outside investors/governments.
Meerax··on Establishment of a closed artificial ecosystem to ensure human survival on moon
My understanding was that Elon was interested in providing the bus service (so to speak) of getting people and cargo there. Less interested in the colony building aspect? But, I believe The Boring Company tunneling machine will fit inside a launch vehicle and the Tesla truck will function on extraterrestrial world's with a pressurized cabin so I could be completely mistaken.
Meerax··on New nuclear engine concept could help realize 3-month trips to Mars
https://usnc.com/ultra-safe-nuclear-technologies-delivers-ad... for the company page And https://usnc.com/fcm-fuel/ for their fuel (not propellant).
Meerax··on Berlin Gold Hat
I recently finished reading "The Art of Forgery" by Noah Charney and that is the exact same feeling I had. Great book, very interesting, but it will leave you curious and perhaps a little doubtful about all art that you look at afterwards. Things like this are so wild and unlikely (to me at least) that when something like it comes up with zero provenance it just raises a whole lot of questions.
Meerax··on Dinosaur Footprints on a Cave Ceiling
Thanks! After reading the description of how the "prints" (they are more accurately called casts) came to be on the ceiling I really had hoped for some pictures.
Meerax··on Possible oldest fossil forest found in New York state
https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-50840134 BBC synopsis with some nice pictures for the short and simple version.
Meerax··on Friended is a new social network that wants to get real
From the TOS: "2. MEMBERSHIP. To become a Member, you must log-in through Facebook which provides your “Account Credentials”, which you may not transfer to or share with any third parties."

Did anyone else see this? They can't promise to not hand over info about you to interested 3rd parties if your account validation and login is based in Facebook. Right?

Meerax··on Non-Green Plants (2013)
Doing some reading through wiki about non-green plants I came across thermogenic plants. Not only can some plants exists without chlorophyll, some can also regulate their temperature.
