MetroWind··on I don't understand quantum physics (2018)
Nobody understands quantum mechanics.
MetroWind··on FreeDNS
If I knew self-hosting BIND was that easy I wouldn't have used FreeDNS.
MetroWind··on America has lost 200k of jobs in media, film and the arts. How much is AI?
I don't know. You can't expect people to consume media if they are boring, regardless of AI.
MetroWind··on The Future of CSS
CSS shouldn't have logic it. But layout needs logic. The next step should be to ditch CSS altogether and implement it as a DSL in JavaScript.
MetroWind··on What I self-host
TrueNAS with file system folders. I don't consume media that much so I get away with it. The only media I need to consume remotely is music, which I have gonic for.
MetroWind··on I know why the mathematicians weep
I don't care one bit that Mathematicians wasted years of progress or lost their craft over this. The problem is that models that can do this are locked behind corporate walls.
MetroWind··on What I self-host
I self-host about 30 services. I exclusively pick software that's written either in C++, Rust, or Go. If I can't find one I write my own in C++.
MetroWind··on Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men
I mean because I've seen and done everything I have hope to see and do in my life. Why not just die.
MetroWind··on Americans' social activity has steeply declined in the past 30 years
I don't know. I like it better this way.
MetroWind··on Passkeys are not a trap
> The passkeys most people use are synced passkeys, stored in iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden or whatever other software of your choosing

Sorry but this is the whole problem with passkey: you are forced to rely on a 3rd party to take care of your credientials, on their computers, with their software. This is like a text book example of a trap: someone set up something that looks harmless/invisible, you walk into it, and that someone now has some leverage over you.

MetroWind··on Total Annihilation, rebuilt for modern computers
It's great. But I just play Beyond All Reason now.
MetroWind··on Passkeys are a trap
Honestly I don't care about any of that. From my perspective, passkey = phone + app required. That's already a red flag big enough for me to not use them. If I put on my engineer hat, another problem I see is that most services seem to not be competent enough to implement it in a non-broken way.
MetroWind··on Bitwarden Dual License Model
People should own their credentials instead of storing it in someone else's computers.
MetroWind··on Lobbying is corruption
Buying political favor is corruption.
MetroWind··on Opus 5.5 agents discover two room-temperature magnetic semiconductor candidates
Suuuurrreeeee
MetroWind··on A browser-native classic Visual Basic VB6 IDE
This is my favorite GUI style.
MetroWind··on Git 3.0's upcoming SHA-256 default will be a costly mistake
No it won't.
MetroWind··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
It's funny how the western world seems to believe every single decision in China is made by the government. You guys really give the CCP too much credit. China also has plenty of closed models just FYI. You never heard of them because they are only available to the domestic market.
MetroWind··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
At that point the US will complete its China conversion and turn on the GFW so you can't access Chinese AI services.
MetroWind··on In an $80 motel room, a discovery to shed light on the origins of life
> You have been blocked from The New York Times because we suspect that you're a robot.

Ok then.

MetroWind··on Show HN: Lofi Cities – Pixel-art city nights with browser-generated lofi
But... why?
MetroWind··on When did Google get so weird?
I have stopped using Google search a looooong time ago.
MetroWind··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
Why is this such a big news? Apples has always been complying in China.
MetroWind··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
Lmao no worries. China will do it and the US can read the paper.
MetroWind··on OpenJev
So the "Unsloppify site" thing just toggle between two AI-generate styles?
MetroWind··on I don't like passkeys
It ultimately comes down to this: it is utterly dangerous and stupid to depend your accounts on third parties (including your phone).
MetroWind··on I think you should almost never use AI to write
Unfortunately people don't usually "write", at least not in the sense this article describes.

> blog post, a research report, a memo, a thoughtful email, a novel

Normal people don't write blog posts, research reports (because normal people don't do research), or novel. They also don't write "thoughtful emails"; they just write low effort normal emails.

MetroWind··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
I mean... of course it's the US. Who else could it be?
MetroWind··on PS5 Linux lead quits: "a bunch of noobs using LLMs" that "they don't understand"
This can't be about LLM. They could just ban LLM PRs like many projects do.
MetroWind··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
The fact that this is downvoted tells a lot about the average level of political literacy on HN
