MikeNotThePope··on Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale
I don't disagree with you. Obviously a doctor can bring in a lot of money. In the same a stock can be valued as the sum all future cash flows w/ a discounted cash flow analysis, a doctor's future income can have a quite high valuation.

That being said, one accident or illness that strips away that doctor's ability to earn, leaving them in a soul crushing amount of debt that can't be discharged via bankruptcy. Their debt obligations are real.

I once got scolded for using vulgar language when I called saving a record "shoving it in the database."
MikeNotThePope··on Why Windows 11 still ships with Windows 95's memory manager hidden inside it
I found a bug where our system would freeze after playing Tomb Raider 2 on a certain CPU/chipset combo. If I remember correctly, it turned out to be a unacceptable voltage drop somewhere in the south bridge.
MikeNotThePope··on Why Windows 11 still ships with Windows 95's memory manager hidden inside it
I used to work as a QA Engineer @ Transmeta testing software om out CPUs to ensure x86 compatibility. My manager this operated like this. She would constantly look for old software to acquire. One of her favorite activities was dumpster diving outside of startups that had failed to pick up old copies of software on CDs and floppy disks. I remember testing a lot of Diablo 2, Tomb Raider of various versions, Star Wars Episode I Racer, and Risk (for Windows 3.0).
MikeNotThePope··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
After having traveled the world, hearing "only $5" reminds me of how how far that goes in some places. Right now I have a friend in Nepal renting a 2 bedroom house for $58/month. I have another friend in Nepal that's earns less than $100/month, and is able to afford they're own place to live alone.

I hate to tell you this, but that bridge displayed makes me believe that any starship designed on your site will prone to rocks flying and terminals igniting whenever the shields take a pounding.

MikeNotThePope··on AI coding has made CI a bottleneck, so we reworked ours to keep up
I'm doing all this myself, and it's my first time getting a consumer facing product from zero to revenue generating on my own. I wouldn't bother doing this without AI, the project is too big. That being said, doing it with AI comes with a learning curve & many things I've never done before.
MikeNotThePope··on AI coding has made CI a bottleneck, so we reworked ours to keep up
How are you speeding up the provisioning? Most of my tests run pretty quick, but spinning up a new runner takes probably most of the time. I haven’t tried optimizing this yet.
MikeNotThePope··on AI coding has made CI a bottleneck, so we reworked ours to keep up
Probably half the generated tests in my app are for markdown files.
MikeNotThePope··on AI coding has made CI a bottleneck, so we reworked ours to keep up
That’s what I’m doing! Results yet to be measured.
MikeNotThePope··on AI coding has made CI a bottleneck, so we reworked ours to keep up
Personally I’m leveling up on using AI to develop a project. My speed at knocking out PRs has increased a lot, but much of that is massaging the process of using AI, including managing CI bottlenecks and costs. I’ve never had to deal with 15+ PRs being developed in parallel before. It’s interesting work, but there’s a lot of doing stuff to get to the stuff I want to do.

Examples of things I’ve tackled this week:

- GitHub Actions costs exploding and looking into self hosting options (gonna try a box in Hetnzer)

- figuring out how to handle unattended builds

- tinkering a lot of email, from how to manage domain reputation and worrying about bots spamming from my server because they started filling out forms

- figuring out how to manage AI development from my phone

- setting up a process to prevent unintended destructive database migrations

- finding a way to know have to babysit the AI but approving a constant stream of questions and permission requests

- all the random little issues that the AI files to fix an endless amount of little things

- finding the right model(s) to use to most efficiently make use of the limits of my subscription

And so on.

MikeNotThePope··on If AI coding is lowering your code quality, you're not managing quality right
To be fair, so do humans.

Sounds interesting. Any plans to open source it? I didn't see a GitHub link.
MikeNotThePope··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
It does in the sense that they're losing business, as people describe in this thread. But I get your point, Google seems to be enjoying the profits more than the harm to their reputation. If it gets bad enough, maybe they'll rethink.

I have a dumb question. What is the eventual of efficient land use? Say we bulldoze a bunch of single family homes and get 10x as dense. Now we have 10x as many people per square kilometer. Is that an efficient use of land? Will there be someone saying at 10x population density that it's an inefficient use of space? If yes, what would they propose instead?
MikeNotThePope··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
I remember talking to a person who worked in marketing Kingsford, which at the time had like over 90% of the marketshare for USA charcoal. They had a marketing budget that was willing to spend money on any ol' stupid idea because they had already won & just wanted to stay on top by getting their name out there.

MikeNotThePope··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
Nothing sexy. Just automating all the little recruiting tasks that suck up my time. Mainly MVP will just reduce, not totally eliminate, applications from people who aren’t serious or are clearly or a fit. A lot of nice to have features that are hard to bolt onto someone else’s ATS.

Here’s an example:

A client wanted me to post a job without compensation listed. They also didn’t want the interview team to know how much the position paid. So it was a pain to keep that information out of communication that everyone could see, I’d have to manually ask candidates outside of the ATS. So I’m addressing stuff like that. It’s not my job as the recruiter insist they make my job easier by divulging that info. I can only tell them it’s a time suck for me, and if they wanna pay me to do the work, then it’d be nice to free up my time by automating an easier way to get handle keeping compensation information as private as is reasonably possible.

MikeNotThePope··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
Quit my job in May. Been working on a hiring platform that I’ve always wanted. I wanted it so bad I quit recruiting, taught myself to code, worked as a developer for 12 years, and now I’m building it :)
MikeNotThePope··on The Philippines' big offshoring industry is growing despite AI
Personally I find AI simultaneously powerful and fatiguing. Hiring someone else to use AI is honestly pretty great.
MikeNotThePope··on What Happened to HackerOne?
Buying stable coins is a mild pain because so many banks think crypto is radioactive. Then you have to wait for your deposited funds to completely settle before you can withdraw the crypto from your account and send it elsewhere. Doable, sure. Easy & convenient, not so much. I wouldn't call it a solved problem in the same way you can hand someone cash, tap to pay with your phone, or pay by scanning a QR Code.
