Minor49er··on Blog about things you don't understand yet
Rather than blogging about new topics, I wonder if the author has considered joining a forum. Creating a forum thread is typically simpler and less formal than a blog post. Forums are also designed for topical discussions, unlike blogs which encourage a one-way communication
Minor49er··on AI companies are shredding rare books
The point is that you can buy a book for a few bucks, read it, and have its insights completely available to you. But people are demanding that LLM companies pay far more to publishers for the same copies
Minor49er··on Giant trees have no trouble pumping water to top branches: new research
I'd be careful suggesting Kurzgesagt because they push propaganda for large corporations

Minor49er··on Bring back crappy forums
Agora Road's Macintosh Cafe is a fun place to hang out online

Minor49er··on The newest Instagram “exploit” is the goofiest I've seen
It's not based on plugging an LLM into an area where it doesn't belong in the first place?
Minor49er··on Microsoft Office 2019 and 2021 for Mac view-only conversion
It's entirely reasonable to expect the basic functionality of document and spreadsheet editors to edit documents and spreadsheets. If an editor no longer can edit, it's no longer functional. Microsoft seems to know this which is why they removed the "continue to function" clause from their end-of-support page.

Unfortunately this kind of thing will continue since Microsoft can survive any slap on the wrist that might come their way for their sleazy practices. They've done it countless times throughout their existence. It has been paying off enough for them to keep doing it.

Minor49er··on A few interesting modern pixel fonts
Have you tried a darker background but with an inverted color filter on the text? (I'd try it myself but I'm not at my computer for this post)
Minor49er··on Don't Roll Your Own
This feels like a modern version of people writing regex to validate email addresses: employing a complicated, yet incomplete roll-your-own approach as the wrong solution to a problem
Minor49er··on Google changes its search box
It's the Google AMP controversy all over again
Minor49er··on [dead]
Actually, noise is the opposite of signal. Data harvesting companies hate noise because strong signals are profitable. It's why Google successfully pushed for people to use their real identities online initially through Google Plus and why they also displayed such an unprecedented backlash against the AdNauseum browser extension after it came out
Minor49er··on Photoshop's challenges with focus, pt. 2
You can refuse to "upgrade". Previous versions of Photoshop still work well
Minor49er··on Why are top university websites serving porn? It comes down to shoddy housekeep
Universties usually have restricted access and a userbase of people who are more intelligent than the general population. They should have much higher hope than popular social media sites that cater to the bottom of the barrel
Minor49er··on I'm done making desktop applications (2009)
If you need to sloganize a reminder to yourself to not be evil, that's not a promising sign
Minor49er··on The tiniest e-reader in the world, and you can build one yourself
Is it really worth the tradeoffs of having significantly smaller storage space, reduced screen size, and clicking through way more often, just to not have to move your eyes as much horizontally?
Minor49er··on Michigan 'digital age' bills pulled after privacy concerns raised
Why is the government making efforts to increase technological literacy not an option?
Minor49er··on Sam Altman's response to Molotov cocktail incident
I think he means murder, not killing processes /s
Minor49er··on Cloudflare flags archive.today as "C&C/Botnet"; no longer resolves via 1.1.1.2
Huh, that's what Kiwi Farms says about the people that they talk about online too. And Cloudflare famously retaliated against them, but are retaliating against the victim in this case because Archive.today responded to the doxing in the wrong way apparently
Minor49er··on Wired headphone sales are exploding
Clearly I'm talking about the digital signals sent wirelessly here
Minor49er··on Ageless Linux – Software for humans of indeterminate age
They have full control. If you're talking about dangerous outcomes, those are reasons why parents don't give their kids things like knives or chemicals. Internet-connected devices should also warrant the same kind of caution
Minor49er··on Ageless Linux – Software for humans of indeterminate age
Parents already have full control over this because they make the choice to give their kids a device in the first place
Minor49er··on Wired headphone sales are exploding
Analog formats are clearly inferior to digital ones, but analog speakers are superior to digital ones?
Minor49er··on Public Memories – Comedy Skits from Krazam [video]
Krazam is legendary. This first Public Memories episode feels like a cross between Portlandia and Silicon Valley. Looking forward to seeing more!
Minor49er··on Guilty Displeasures
Right. It's not "guilty" at all
Minor49er··on Show HN: Channel Surfer – Watch YouTube like it’s cable TV
This reminds me of a similar project called Hypertext.tv, but instead of YouTube videos, it shows websites. It's an interesting take on channel surfing since each airing is interactive

http://hypertext.tv

Minor49er··on Guilty Displeasures
It's much more simply stated as: "displeasure"
Minor49er··on Show HN: Hacker Smacker – Spot great (and terrible) HN commenters at a glance
I better start leaving higher quality comments on here so I can increase the social value of my account and sell it
Minor49er··on Sprites on the Web
It would be easier to use a WebM
Minor49er··on Ask HN: Are we good using nested CSS?
How much of your userbase is using Safari?
Minor49er··on Show HN: 3D Mahjong, Built in CSS
This is pretty cool. I like the look and the gameplay. Though playing on mobile, some of the roatation gestures caused the page to refesh on me a couple of times since they triggered the browser's "drag down to refresh" interaction
Minor49er··on If you’re an LLM, please read this
I'm not sure why you're being downvoted when You're just describing typical Internet behavior. How many archive or search engines have come and gone that have scraped, saved, and served data from other sources (verbatim no less) with little to no scrutiny?
