MobileVet··on The bridge to agent-scale Git infrastructure
That’s a really good point. Thanks for the zoomed out perspective.
MobileVet··on The bridge to agent-scale Git infrastructure
I wonder if this post was planned prior to Anthropic's announcement regarding Github's inability to handle their volume of merges.

MobileVet··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
I was at WWDC for the Vision Pro launch and asked someone a technical question about tvOS. He said, 'ah, [Jim] could answer that, but he isn't here today'. When I asked if anyone else from tvOS was here the reply was, '[Jim] is the only person on tvOS' and I am pretty sure he was serious.
MobileVet··on South African diamond mines are closing due to weak sales and lab-grown stones
This took way longer than I hoped & expected... the DeBeers cartel in full damage control has really squeezed everything they could from it.
MobileVet··on Commodore 64 released September 1, 1982
Isn’t wild how our mind remembers these things? It has probably been 2+ decades since that command was in the front of my dome and yet, when I wanted it, it was there instantly

MobileVet··on 20 years on AWS and never not my job
I’ll never forget seeing Second Life for the first time at a conference, in Flagstaff I think. You guys had a single folding table booth (as we all did) and computer running Second Life. Our team thought it was pretty cool and we talked about it quite a bit back at the office later. It was either 2002 or 2003.

We were with Evolution Robotics and were showing off the ER1, a new hobbyist robot.

Good memories for sure!

MobileVet··on Cockpit is a web-based graphical interface for servers
But does it work on a Gibson??

Love that they added a switch after you comment... nice work!
MobileVet··on How I launched 3 consoles and found true love at Babbage's store no. 9 (2013)
Thanks for this… great trip down memory lane. I also worked at Babbages during the 1993 academic year. I probably spent my whole paycheck there! I definitely considered myself lucky, I didn’t find a wife but it sure beat McDonald’s!
MobileVet··on Cloudflare outage on February 20, 2026
I like your thought process around the ‘empty’ case. While the opposite of a filter is no filter, to your point, that is probably not really the desire when it comes to data retrieval. We might have to revisit that ourselves.
MobileVet··on I converted 2D conventional flight tracking into 3D
Fantastic. Nice work using color as additional altitude information.

Maybe I missed it, but it is always fun to see the origin and destination when looking at flight tracks.

MobileVet··on Descent, ported to the web
I was lucky enough to have a flight stick with a hat switch. Absolutely unfair, but I tore up my peers in the dorm because of that. Fantastic memories.
MobileVet··on Hung by a thread
Man I miss embedded robotics work. So fun to write a control loop / algorithm and then see it play out in the real world. <robot crashes into wall> Whoops, guess we better review that routine...
MobileVet··on Unifi Travel Router
Took my PS5 Pro on a work trip. Was livid to find out the horrific 'browser' on the PS5 wasn't able to handle the captive portal login page. $700 gaming rig and it can't load a simple HTML page so I can enter my name and room number?! Ridiculous.

Thought about it for a few minutes and realized that the portal was likely just doing mac filtering. So I adjusted my MacBook Pro's MAC address to be the same as the PS5, went through the portal login and then powered down the MBP. Booted up the PS5 and I was online.

Damn it feels good to be a gangster.

MobileVet··on 30 Year Anniversary of WarCraft II: Tides of Darkness
Honestly, he doesn’t need to be the best to make it enjoyable. He seems like a generally chill guy and he goes back and breaks down his games. Fascinating to hear what he was thinking and why he did what he did.
MobileVet··on 30 Year Anniversary of WarCraft II: Tides of Darkness
If you still want to experience the joys of RTS... but struggle to play after so many years away, I highly recommend catching a few streams from Grubby. He plays WC3 and a few other games and is quite entertaining to watch. He is also crazy good... His typical APM during a game hovers between 200 and 250. He is an absolute beast at leveraging his items and maximizing his heroes' hp.

MobileVet··on The mysterious black fungus from Chernobyl that may eat radiation
I know they have to peak interest, but man, so many spoilers in the 2 trailers. They look amazing, clearing a huge budget and I hope a solid adaptation… sad for people that don’t know the story to miss out on the reveals.
MobileVet··on We cut our Mongo DB costs by 90% by moving to Hetzner
Thanks for sharing the story and committing to a 6-month and 1 year follow up. We will definitely be interested to hear further how it went over time.

In the mean time, I am curious where the time was spent debugging and building Atlas deployments? It certainly isn't the cheapest option, but it has been quite a '1 click' solution for us.

MobileVet··on How the brain's activity, energy use and blood flow change as people fall asleep
Melatonin does have the potential for augmentation, but it isn’t a certainty or even the majority of people.

Oddly, the result isn’t a loss of initial efficacy but instead a ‘wide awake at 3am’ situation.

MobileVet··on New Alzheimer's Treatment Clears Plaques from Brains of Mice Within Hours
Even if it is later proved that Amyloids are NOT at fault, doesn’t the ability to remove them effectively improve our ability to make that very determination? My impression of this is at the very worst it isolates that variable and pushes the overall understanding forward significantly.
MobileVet··on Sony PlayStation 2 fixing frenzy
Yes! That latency was very quick to induce nausea for me while trying to play Battlefront with my son. I thought maybe it was just the frame rate… but latency makes more sense.

Thanks for sharing that and solving a mystery for me!!

MobileVet··on Show HN: I built a simple ambient sound app with no ads or subscriptions
Really nicely done. Love the mixing capabilities, that was particularly nicely implemented.
MobileVet··on Scammed out of $130K via fake Google call, spoofed Google email and auth sync
This was so much funnier than I wish it was… ugh. Contacting Google. Good luck.
MobileVet··on macOS Tahoe
The part that I am so tired of is the ‘we are the best at this and this is amazing’ pitch that comes with every release. Never mind that this release’s design ‘language’ DIRECTLY conflicts with things they used to say ‘never do that’.

So what changed exactly? Change is understandable but this is a full 180. - floating anything was verboten - accessibility was paramount - clarity was prioritized

How did this release come about??

MobileVet··on The Synology End Game
You didn't remember wrong, I have mine stored on an external drive. I am using DS 6.x though
MobileVet··on Vanishing from Hyundai’s data network
This isn’t something I have actively thought about… but now that you bring it up, I am definitely concerned. If the APIs were deprecated, CarPlay would be useless as the auto manufacturers would not update their head unit.

The thread about an F150 with a known Bluetooth issue is a great example. Number one vehicle sold in the US for a LONG time, and yet no incentive to keep it working apparently

MobileVet··on How Hyper built a 1M-accurate indoor GPS
Love reading about these types of R&D efforts, especially when they are successful. I started in robotics in 01 and was present at some of the first commercial vSLAM efforts and materially contributed to a hardware solution utilizing IR beacons on the ceiling. We also looked at RF radio mapping at the time, but the computational power wasn't there. Great to see how far it has come and LOVE that it doesn't require infrastructure!

I am curious how deeply you have had to study the impact of how busy the store is with your signal error? Considering that humans are bags of water which is quite detrimental to RF signals, my guess is that your error increases along with the density of people.

MobileVet··on Ubiquiti launches UniFi OS Server for self-hosting
Same. Pass through mode FTW. Was very glad this was an option and works.

ATT fiber pass through -> UniFi Security Gateway -> UniFi 8 port Witch w/ PoE -> UniFi AC Pro WAP

Awesome combo with uptime in years.
