Neeek··on New York’s budget bill would require “blocking technology” on all 3D printers
Just to be clear, I don't think this is useful or good legislation. While the idea that the state is a shady body that's out to fleece an honest and unsuspecting peoples is a great story beat, I just don't think it's particularly accurate to reality and we shouldn't pretend that it is just because it sounds good in a HN comment.
Neeek··on New York’s budget bill would require “blocking technology” on all 3D printers
Well over a decade actually https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberator_(gun) but of course just ignore the context of the parent comment about what's legally considered a firearm.
Neeek··on New York’s budget bill would require “blocking technology” on all 3D printers
I think the representatives pushing for this legislation is evidence that a significant portion of their polled constituents want restrictions on printed ghost guns. Is that more or less believable than a manufacturing lobby pushing legislators in NY state for printer DRM?

The only usable part a plastic 3D printer will make for you is the receiver, which is the whole point, to circumvent that very narrow legal classification. You're right about alternative lawmaking avenues, but given the 2a pushback on controlling "replacement parts" Americans are kind of stuck with the bed they made.

Did you mean to reply to the BYD lidar thread on the front page right now?

Neeek··on 1910: The year the modern world lost its mind
The article's author co-wrote Abundance.
Neeek··on Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals
They couldn't "back then" either, I would argue.
Neeek··on Wayland is not ready as a 1:1 compatible Xorg replacement just yet
Not being able to have multi-DPI in X is what moved me over. Scaling one display makes everything fuzzy and increased my idle load substantially, though maybe a different compositor might have given different results.

EDIT: I should also mention that my experience is overall positive, I use swaywm so config and setup is easier than with X (no xorg.conf to tinker with every driver update) with a small stability tradeoff. Sometimes sessions will crash out when doing things with the GPU dmabuffers, which for a lot of people isn't really acceptable, but also who's usually using dmabuffers?

Oh and mouse interactions can be really wrong when going between xwayland windows and native ones.

Neeek··on The Sweden experiment: how no lockdowns led to mental health, healthier economy
From our experience here in Queensland, it's definitely not lost. We managed to get on top of a delta outbreak that peaked at NZ's current daily cases with a week of lockdown less than a month ago.
Neeek··on The largest study to date on the genetic basis of sexuality (2019)
Of course! I should have mentioned that I absolutely agree with the thrust of your original comment :) I should have been less confrontational with my opening statement.
Neeek··on The largest study to date on the genetic basis of sexuality (2019)
I'm a little confused, you seem to be using choice and environment like they are synonymous here. It's a small nitpick but, even if this is environmental or epigenetic it doesn't necessarily mean that people get to choose the environment they exist in, at least in their formative years.
Neeek··on Radio users reminded not to use radios in crimes
I believe the original assertion was that the word 'idiot' is often used as shorthand for people that have different priors and indoctrination as you, so to propose that engineers are somehow less susceptible to that seems like the more questionable take here.
Neeek··on Radio users reminded not to use radios in crimes
What, you've never met a stupid engineer?
Neeek··on The Defaults Don't Work
Those societal advantages are only that way because of the defaults the article is describing. You could imagine a set of norms that better encourages and supports young parents (in child rearing as well as personal development).
Neeek··on What are the mysterious light sources on light pollution maps?
It's also FUD, it's trivial to add a heater to the LEDs and still come in at a lower wattage than a tradition lamp.
Neeek··on A game theorist breaks down the effects of inequality
This completely ignores the fact that below a certain line, B no longer gets to participate as freely as A in the space. A gets to demonstrate higher returns as well as higher losses and still be considered a better option even though in absolute terms they have contributed greater losses than B. "Reasonable to assume, follow the trend" is just so braindead, and basically no better than flipping a coin; if you're are absent of any other evidence, then maybe you shouldn't be using that to segregate the population in to the poors and those-who-know-better.
Neeek··on A game theorist breaks down the effects of inequality
That is assuming that the person that owns the wealth is the sole driver for growth of that wealth. Can we stop pretending that being wealthy is empirical evidence that you know how to grow an investment?
Neeek··on US emissions fell 2.1% in 2019
While it's true that methane only lasts for a decade in the atmosphere, it decays in to co2 and water vapor so it's not as though it is better in the long run. It's very bad short term and as bad long term.
Neeek··on Bio-coal: A renewable and producible fuel from lignocellulosic biomass
Except it won't, dead plants decompose and release their carbon back in to the atmosphere whether you burn it or not. Coal comes from an age where atmospheric carbon was much higher and nothing had evolved to decompose wood, digging it up and burning it means a net increase, growing something and burning it is net neutral.
Neeek··on Makers, Don't Let Yourself Be Forced into the 'Manager Schedule'
I think their point was that architectural decisions shouldn't be dictated by any one single engineer.

Neeek··on The Last of the Universe’s Ordinary Matter Has Been Found
It is a running theory that space time could be curved and wrap, or be more traditionally flat, or even be some kind of saddle that means it is still curved but never meets itself again like a sphere does. Recent studies point to it being flat though, if I remember correctly.
Neeek··on The Last of the Universe’s Ordinary Matter Has Been Found
There have been recent studies which show that universe is probably "flat" though.
Neeek··on Show HN: Online challenge: Build a CPU from scratch
In the full adder level, shouldn't the input/output table in the specification read 01 for the h/l on row 3? Had me a little confused trying to get my head around how the adder works.

I'm really enjoying the whole thing though, great work!

Neeek··on UTC Is Enough for Everyone, Right?
I might not be understanding your scenario correctly, but isn't it stated that UTC has 00:00 offset and should be stored that way? You would then add an offset based on current tzdata for that timezone string which would make it dynamic and accurate for the situation you described.
Neeek··on Ditch the Batteries: Off-Grid Compressed Air Energy Storage
And then also goes in to detail about small scale iso-thermal setups that have negligible thermal losses. Apparently "author did not mention" actually means "I did not read the article".
Neeek··on The Case for a Carbon Tax on Beef
Not to mention that you need to grow the grain to feed the beef if they aren't grass fed cattle.
Neeek··on New Giant Viruses Further Blur the Definition of Life
We have the organs to reproduce provided that we, you know, exist... I'm not arguing how correct the definition is, more that it's what is 'textbook' from my understanding, and not really do do with the consume energy, produce waste comment or ability to react to an environment like some other posts suggested.
Neeek··on New Giant Viruses Further Blur the Definition of Life
Ingestion isn't really reproduction though, even if the dependency is there. I'm not saying it's a perfect definition, just pointing out that it's never been "consume energy, produce waste".
