Nemo_bis··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
You can tell what proportion they want to take the offer by how generous the offer is. And indeed:

> The Redmond, Washington-based company is expecting a lower proportion to accept the voluntary exit offer because the employees included in the offer are younger and no additional incentive is given beyond standard severance for their length of service, the person familiar said. Typical take-up levels for buyouts in tech are between 3 per cent and 5 per cent, they added.

> Certain pools of employees, including some focused on data centers, sales and marketing, aren’t eligible, the spokesperson said.

Sales alone is some 25 % of Microsoft expenditures, so are these 60k about 50 % of what's left?

Nemo_bis··on Solar surpasses nuclear power globally for first time
30 % of total generating capacity (Switzerland) is too little? Even 6 % is plenty enough to stabilise the grid in (northern) Italy, while helping France as well. Maybe you are overestimating how much imbalance happens.

See https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/china-leads-wave-cle... for some figures on curtailment.

Nemo_bis··on There isn't an easy exploit for this PHP vulnerability
I'm tempted to agree but at the same time we never (?) had news of confirmed data breaches due to log4shell exploits either, so perhaps people are just good at staying quiet when they get attacked.

> Despite the high volume of exploit attempts following the discovery of the Log4Shell vulnerability, reports of major breaches were relatively few. One of the first significant attacks targeted the Belgian Ministry of Defense. Reported on December 12th, just three days after the vulnerability became widely known, the Ministry did not disclose specific details but confirmed the Log4J vulnerability as the attack vector.

Nemo_bis··on Solar surpasses nuclear power globally for first time
It has existed since the 1960s.

> Pumped storage is by far the largest-capacity form of grid energy storage available, and, as of 2020, accounted for around 95% of all active storage installations worldwide, with a total installed throughput capacity of over 181 GW and as of 2020 a total installed storage capacity of over 1.6 TWh.

There are some examples at https://fedi.tips/crossposting-between-mastodon-and-other-so...

The key point is that you must not post in XTwitter first, but you have to use the crossposter's client as source. Pulling content out of XTwitter, even your own, is onerous.

The copyright implications of displaying Instagram content elsewhere are still unclear. There were many lawsuits over Instagram embeds. https://copyrightlately.com/legal-embed-instagram-photos-web...

Tall order. The main Nitter instances were using tens of thousands of accounts to evade detection, IIRC. Adding money to the mix creates more legal liability and a paper trail towards people who can be sued.

It's much easier if thousands of people set up their own Nitter instances.

That's the point, companies are not able to measure that. At all.

Yes, it's because of the XTwitter API changes (mostly between February 2023 and February 2024).

People have been crossposting to Mastodon and the fediverse for many years.

In the old days you would do it with a desktop or mobile client for Twitter and Identi.ca. In the 2020s there were many server-side crossposters like moa.party. https://wiert.me/2025/05/19/moa-link-your-mastodon-account-t...

Nowadays such clients are effectively impossible, because the XTwitter API pricing is designed for business users only. Some bigger services can afford to pay for the privilege to post via the API (e.g. Buffer I think?), which can work for corporate communications. The prices are such that often it's cheaper to pay a person to do the crossposting manually and do it properly while at it.

USA entities sometimes are not even aware that they have a fully functioning euro account able to receive fee-free SEPA bank transfers, simply as a mechanical consequence of having an euro-denominated account. In the past I've tested this: I asked the IBAN of an euro-denominated account from USA non-profits, got warned nobody ever sent money there, proceeded to send a donation anyway, had it work perfectly fine.

HOWEVER it's conceivable that the USA bank might end up charging some BS fees on their side just because they can. That's hard to control for.

Italian banks immediately apply US sanctions because they are scared they'd be cut off SWIFT. Banca Etica, A/I's bank, previously refused to open a bank account to Francesca Albanese. https://www.bancaetica.it/banca-etica-chiede-alle-istituzion...

What do you mean "not directly in trouble"? Their bank account will be blocked.
Nemo_bis··on US sanctions Italian hosting provider Autistici Inventati
The objective is to target USA citizens who host their blogs there. Italian banks, EU-based payment processors and domain registrars will still block you if you are sanctioned by the USA Treasury, to avoid being cut off the global financial system.

That sounds like you do want a protocol. You have listed several requirements of one such protocol: 1) Patches at git-email would make them; 2) Issues in markdown format; 3) Authentication with OIDC; and others depending how strictly you meant some of your other preferences.

4 years of running production GitLab on nightly is very impressive! I would never have imagined you could last that long. Clearly the quality of GitLab releases is much higher than I imagined.

The larger the company, the more likely that it's enmeshed with Microsoft in some of its parts. Microsoft is relentless in expanding its footprint with vendor lock-in and cross-sells until it replaces all competitors.
