NginUS··on Ask HN: Abandoning smartphones?
My BlackBerry was broken >30% of the time I had it. If it wasn't the headphone jack, it was the keypad- or reboots in the middle of replying to email. I was constantly at the Verizon store to have the tech verify a replacement could be sent, waiting for that, then importing everything again & all that comes with that process.

Ultimately it cost more time than it saved.

It was helpful to have email in my pocket, but I get by without it for now.

NginUS··on Further Freedom Attacks
I agree completely. What I can't be sure of is whether these actions are indeed a step in the wrong direction- at least for the time being. Just maybe it's not what it seems.

When Bernanke starts recklessly printing money the way he did recently- that seems like a panic-driven survivalist effort to me, and I begin wondering if this isn't more of the same.

China's got us by the balls alright. I'm sure there's some twisting going on that only the government higher-ups can see, to warrant these reactions of late.

I'm shocked, and awed.
NginUS··on Could You Cut the Cable or Satellite Cord?
I've been without TV for about 5 years now after noticing a creeping & growing revulsion for what I saw on it.

Even if I'm not more productive, I'm less desensitized without one.

NginUS··on Ask HN: What are you thankful for?
I'm grateful for the free open source software that's essential to keeping projects on budget.
NginUS··on Ask HN: What sync software do you use?
I use SyncBack Pro & am happier with it than any other.

You'll find these features you're asking about, and then some.

Favorites of mine?

a. Serial number based triggers & path variables.

b. Write-checksumming.

c. Pre & post job load/eject.

NginUS··on Appsumo: Lifetime Mixpanel for $17
Doesn't seem so bad until the purchase process ends in an error and all that's accomplished is $17 is lost.

I hope they return my emails & resolve it.

EDIT:

+1 for AppSumo, <30 minutes support reply after midnight on a Monday overnight.

NginUS··on Happypenguin.org: Hard drive crash, a cautionary tale
I almost lost half my backups this year.

That panic is what got me, right when things don't need to get any worse, they do.

After all the frustration of suffering through slow as molasses copy operations because they had to be with checksumming, wondering to myself 'how can I justify spending so much time on this?'...

Ultimately it paid off & a bad thing wasn't allowed to get worse because of it, and the third copy saved the day.

My infrastructure is more resilient now after, and I'm less likely to make concessions with regard to redundancy later.

I can still feel overwhelmed when I think about all the time & potential progress I lost recovering, but when I read this article I totally understand & it takes the edge off some. I'm glad for them that all wasn't lost.

Some of the good that came from it all was that I found an app called SyncBackPro to pull backups onto an offline sequence with from Windows machines.

Unlike others I saw, it can implement logic that says when this serial USB storage is mounted on drive foo, trigger job bar then run this script & eject- plus it does write checksumming for <$100.

NginUS··on Ask HN: I have a webpage now but how do I convert?

NginUS··on Ask HN: Would you please give me some feedback on my new startup?
I will since you said please.

I don't want to give up an email route to my inbox just to see what you can do with my site.

I would, however if I were actively shopping for such a thing.

If for some reason I think I should be browsing the .com version with Firefox, ie from a Google search, it lets me stay stuck there- it tells me the browser's wrong, but there's no way out. If I didn't know any better I'd think you're design was crap & move on.

I was surprised at the entry requiring my participation in policing the site, as the last entry in the TOS states. Are you going to boot me for not clicking the 'flag spam' button? Maybe that's standard & I've just scanned over it until now, but today it seems silly.

I don't know about your market, so site UX is about the best I can do for you.

NginUS··on Ask HN: Why is Everyone Leaving Google?
I'd be ineterested in hearing how people go about creating a 'workplace culture' that doesn't let that happen.

Something must have become askew.

NginUS··on Wouldworks: My non-software startup
Here's what comes to mind when I look at what you're doing.

I have a monitor problem where one is too short, and because of how my desk is I'd have to raise both of them different heights for them to fit right. If I had a couple books the right size, it would solve the problem- but that would look ghetto- and I don't have books the right size anyway.

What if customers could send you a photo of something that could be solved by custom woodwork that they don't have the means to do themselves, so you could exchange measurements & sell a solution like that?

NginUS··on Poll: Are you using SSDs?
2x Kingston E-series, 1x Intel X-25E.

The difference is similar to dialup --> cable.

Intel's self-serve support's organized better than Kingston's, but neither offers a subscription to notify of firmware updates like Dell does.

NginUS··on Ask HN: What were you doing when 9/11 happened?
It was the start of the day at work, I was loading the truck to go install a videoconferencing system. My boss was watching CNN on his computer, and a few of my co-workers had stopped to watch over his shoulder. I noticed people gathering & stopped to see what was going on. As soon as I saw, I called a friend in Queens, she had overslept and was late to work. Her office was close by, that was her subway stop there at the towers.
NginUS··on Ask HN: Experiences with PayPal? Would you recommend or kill it with fire?
Prohibitive address requirements.

My building's mailbox at the apartment complex where I live/work is easily & frequently compromised by mischievous kids, so receiving mail here isn't an option.

Instead I use a separate P.O. Box for both business and personal mailing addresses.

My shipping & receiving is at a local Pack & Ship, except special deliveries which are scheduled at a gated storage unit. Neither of which can be expected to receive mail on my behalf.

When I wrote to PayPal after seeing that they disallow the use of P.O. Boxes, I thought of these horror stories we read about with them and basically decided not to go ahead using them before they replied.

This decision was reinforced afterward when they eventually did reply, it wasn't clear if they'd even read what I'd written or if it was scanned by a bot. I received what seemed a 'canned' response that was worded such that it was clear they would be 'sticking to their guns/policy' and weren't going to even try to be helpful.

So, they won't be connecting to my business account.

On the flip side, the one good thing about them is their adoption of the Verisign cellular keychain token, which changes the multi-factor authentication code over the air every minute or so.

Fast-forward 100 years after we learn that all our geneticly modified strains indeed are making us sick & oops, too late. No System Restore point.
NginUS··on Ask HN: How did you quit smoking?
When I quit it was cold turkey, I'd keep saying to myself, 'You only _think_ you want a cigarette' to stay reminded that really I don't. Plus, a couple years earlier I watched my father die of lung cancer, although he never smoked- so as bad as that was, it helped to an extent. I assure you, it's NOT how you want to go.
