NukedOne··on Andrej Karpathy Departs OpenAI
I will keep that in mind, sorry.
NukedOne··on Andrej Karpathy Departs OpenAI
That site is straight out a hostile asshole design.
NukedOne··on OpenTTD
Retirement goals.
NukedOne··on Tell HN: ChatGPT has become terrible for academic research
Have you seen Consensus? It has access to 200M papers.
NukedOne··on Ask HN: Who are the "snake oil salesmen" of tech?
It's wildly insulting, defamatory, and detached from all reality on several levels, to classify Rust as snake oil.

Do you drink black or green tea? L-Theanine can make you have vivid dreams.
NukedOne··on Induce Lucid Dreaming
Melatonin also comes as a supplement.
NukedOne··on Induce Lucid Dreaming
What do you think makes you have these vivid dreams?
NukedOne··on Ask HN: Good books on philosophy of engineering?
I'm curious as to how you feel about this[1]?

Understood. Enjoy your break, you deserved it.
NukedOne··on The Hacker News Top books of 2023
Great job, loved the book. Is there a plan for another one, perhaps this time focusing on compilers?
NukedOne··on Ask HN: What's a promising area to work on in 2024 -ideally not crowded already?
Why do you think these books are interesting?

NukedOne··on Ask HN: Good book to learn modern networking?
To clarify, the praiseful comment made me curious and I wanted to know what's so good about the book, so I went through the Table of Contents and noticed that the physical layer is missing. I was just trying to point out that this layer is equally important as others for someone looking to gain a good grasp of networking.
NukedOne··on Ask HN: Good book to learn modern networking?
No. Why would I? I was merely commenting on the "best textbook out there to learn modern networking."
NukedOne··on Ask HN: Good book to learn modern networking?
Just skimmed through the Table of Contents. There doesn't seem to be even a word on the physical layer.
NukedOne··on Ask HN: Good book to learn modern networking?
When it comes to the networking theory, you can't go wrong with Andy Tanenbaum's book.
NukedOne··on Ask HN: Skills that give you the edge?
If you want to go deeper into this, there is the Manual that describes the action units and how to measure them, but you'll also want to read about how specific emotions manifest in humans. For that, some other Ekman's books are useful, in no particular order:

- Unmasking the Social Engineer: The Human Element of Security by Christopher Hadnagy, Paul Kelly F. & Paul Ekman (2014)

- Unmasking the Face: A Guide to Recognizing Emotions From Facial Expressions by Paul Ekman & Wallace V. Friesen (2003)

- Emotions Revealed: Recognizing Faces and Feelings to Improve Communication and Emotional Life by Paul Ekman (2003)

- Telling Lies: Clues to Deceit in the Marketplace, Politics, and Marriage by Paul Ekman (1992)

- Emotion in the Human Face: Guidelines for Research and an Integration of Findings by Paul Ekman, Wallace V. Friesen, Phoebe Ellsworth, Arnold P. Goldstein & Leonard Krasner (1972)

- What the Face Reveals: Basic and Applied Studies of Spontaneous Expression Using the Facial Action Coding System (FACS) (2nd Edition) by Paul Ekman, Erika L. Rosenberg (2005)

- Why Kids Lie by Paul Ekman (1989)

NukedOne··on Ask HN: Skills that give you the edge?
Facial Action Coding System.
NukedOne··on Ask HN: Last day of 2023, how did you manage to achieve your goals?
I'm leaning towards having a mastery-oriented (as opposed to performance-oriented) goal orientation. As such, I'm always focused on working to improve myself in a wide variety of things. There are no big goals for me, only directions. That said, I'm satisfied with the delta of where I'm at now minus where I had been this time last year. And, the direction I'm headed looks promising.

NukedOne··on Ask HN: What community do you ask dev questions to?
As the sibling comment says: my VPS is always on, and I can SSH into it from any of my machines, reattach to the screen session, and talk under the same nickname. Besides this, I'm never offline (barring things like netsplits). I'm not doing it for security reasons, although it does provide a level of indirection if your goal is to not expose your home IP address to everyone (getting a cloak is also useful when it comes to this).
NukedOne··on Ask HN: What community do you ask dev questions to?
I can wholeheartedly recommend a terminal IRC client (e.g. irssi) in a screen session running on a VPS.
NukedOne··on Ask HN: What skill do you want to develop or improve in 2024?
Proper profiling.
NukedOne··on Ask HN: What are your favorite tools?
I use Obsidian Sync.
NukedOne··on Ask HN: What did you learn this year?
This was a year of implementing programming languages for me, mostly. I saw up close how a series of layers (or languages, if you will, that are mutually defined by virtual machines at the same level) on top of machine code (which is numeric and hence difficult for humans to use), each one more convenient than its predecessor, leads to bridging the gap between what is convenient for machines and what for humans.
NukedOne··on Ask HN: What community do you ask dev questions to?
I'll point out that IRC is still a thing and that there are some very helpful master programmers hanging out there.
NukedOne··on Ask HN: Whats the best bookmark manager app for smartphone and desktop? And why?
I'll check out Pinboard. Thanks.
NukedOne··on Ask HN: What are your favorite tools?
I think I have somewhere around 1k notes. Startup time is not my concern as I keep it open all the time. It seems like I bumped into https://github.com/zsviczian/obsidian-excalidraw-plugin/issu... tl;dr: Minimal theme doesn't get along with Excalidraw.
NukedOne··on Ask HN: Whats the best bookmark manager app for smartphone and desktop? And why?
I just keep my web bookmarks in the bookmark toolbar. I've never felt the need for a dedicated app to manage them, as I have a good mental map of where in the directory tree things are. Am I missing out?
