Oarch··on CNC Stone Carving
I think robotically driven historic building renovation is one of the safest jobs.

1. Loads of pent up historic demand 2. Work is complex, sensitive and physical. 3. There's more history every day!

Oarch··on Git for the US Code
Look into the debacle that happened when UpCodes tried to make building legislation widely available. They were sued for copyright infringement!
Oarch··on Genie 4
I found it perplexing how the dragons shrank in size, or perhaps the castle turret in the background didn't shrink fast enough.

Either way, the sense of believability was rapidly (and smoothly) lost.

And AI becomes the only way to handle the deluge - the system insists upon itself.
Oarch··on BIMCraft
By Pedro Medeiros - to anyone in the construction industry, this UI will almost certainly remind them of Autodesk's Revit.
Oarch··on Every AI model has the same "controversial" take on humans
Ironic that the LLMs appear to suffer from groupthink then!
Oarch··on "Tame" boar and deer are instinctively adapting to the wolf in the Netherlands
The bison have been around for 4 or so years now. It's in Blean Woods near Canterbury.
Oarch··on AI models may be capable of self-replicating without access to a datacenter
Self replicating AI via smart fridges you say?

Silicon Valley nailed it.

Hey, some of us love and appreciate that red hair too!
Oarch··on Illustration Beyond Proof
I've long been a fan of the way 3b1b illustrates and explains math.

I wonder if something like OpenAI's recent IntelligentUI feature couldn't also be used to creature beautiful, intuitive walkthroughs of otherwise opaque areas of math?

Oarch··on Recent AI models struggled to match a human algorithmic innovation
If AIs start getting truly good at innovation, we may cease to recognise our reality.

I saw one mathematician describe the recent OpenAI math-dump as 'alien-like' math.

Imagine a world of countless new aircraft designs, fuel sources, musical genres, architectural styles. It could be bewildering.

Oarch··on 'The eels were climbing out of the water to die'
I guess I was hoping for concrete evidence, charges brought and consequences. Given the length of the read I'd wanted some payoff...

Yes I found there was some suspicion. The rest read to me as related thematic padding.

Oarch··on 'The eels were climbing out of the water to die'
It's a long, meandering read never comes close to a clear claim or conclusion.
Oarch··on Visa, Mastercard, Major Banks Facing New Litigation over 'Anticompetitive' Fees
IIRC it was religious bodies targeting / lobbying / infiltrating them as a way to push their censorship beliefs? Perhaps someone else knows better
Oarch··on The art of defusing a second world war bomb
They just cut the masts off it last week, apparently to stop boats heading over to look at it.

I saw them while still attached earlier this summer - very spooky, like being next to a potentially active volcano.

Oarch··on A font recreated from photographs of classic Commodore 64 keycaps
Oh gosh, this is really rather nice.
Oarch··on Questions for believers in AI consciousness
Something with an internal world naturally has its own drivers and desires. If you leave a AI model alone, it doesn't just wander off into the world, develop ideas about its destiny and begin chasing them. It just sits waiting for the next prompt. It doesn't daydream when we're not looking, at least AFAIK.

Kind of a genius move to name it 'America' from the get go.

Oarch··on Everyone should slow down AI development except for me
GPT-2 was called "too dangerous to release".
Oarch··on The Waymo effect: how AI is quietly making research less collaborative
You're absolutely right—it's been a load-bearing LLM tell for a while now.
Oarch··on Liesegang Rings
Nice write up! Felt like a Nile Blue/Red experiment.

> Even though liesegang rings aren't the mechanism behind animal patterning, you still can't help but marvel at what goes on behind the scenes

Turing Patterns, maybe? I wish more people knew about them, they're so cool!

Oarch··on Larger Pacific striped octopus
Hey, that's unfair. I'm working through the backlog as fast as I can!

Blame I.T. - they keep resetting my password and I'm not allowed to write it down on a Post-It like back in the old days...

Oarch··on How GPT‑5.6 Sol helps run quantum computing experiments
Something about the look of quantum computers takes me right back to the ENIAC.
