Ohn0··on AOL Moloch: open-source, large scale, packet-capturing, indexing database system
This too confuses me. Why that name?
Ohn0··on Why a coronavirus vaccine could take way longer than a year
True. Don't want to give anyone monkey virus or anything.
Ohn0··on SpaceX bans Zoom over privacy concerns
It was clear from Zoom's security vulnerability last year that they value ease-of-use over security, so it seems obvious to me they wouldn't care about privacy.
Ohn0··on GitHub for mobile is now available
This is why I use GitLab
Ohn0··on GitHub for mobile is now available
This is literally why I hate native apps... they will always take resources away from the website which is an absolute necessity. Unless the service is app only (rare), now you have 3 separate teams working to build the same solution.
Ohn0··on Firefox 74
Good question
Ohn0··on Firefox 74
At first glance, this seems to be pretty opinionated, with a hip 30 second commercial

Ohn0··on Firefox 74
I used to be a fan of FF until chrome. I understand it's bad - but how about chromium?

Btw, I'm not against looking at FF again, but looking at this changelog and recent product direction, they honestly feel lost.

> When a video is uploaded with a batch of photos on Instagram ...

Features just for insta? I thought this was a web browser not an instagram browser. I guess same goes for the facebook container... what's up with building browser features for facebook? Why no reddit container, or google container, or amazon container?

Cool!

Ohn0··on How We Acquired HEY.com
Who want's to take a wild guess at the purchase price?!
Ohn0··on AB2712 – California Universal Basic Income
Do any other hackers wonder what the overhead is for collecting / enforcing a new tax (VAT)?

Like others have mentioned, it seemed like the benefits of UBI were to eliminate some redundancy from similar programs that require more administration. Creating a new tax seems non-trivial, but on the other hand would be easy to ratchet up down the road.

Ohn0··on Google Just Gave Millions of Users a Reason to Quit Chrome
I guess I picked the wrong horse - lol
Ohn0··on Google resists demands from states in digital-ad probe
Is it just me or is it kind of ironic that another headline today involves Google's sort of fast and loose behavior related to being the dominant browser on the market?
Ohn0··on Google Just Gave Millions of Users a Reason to Quit Chrome
This appears to be a dupe on the homepage: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22383910
Ohn0··on How America Became “A City Upon a Hill”: The Rise and Fall of Perry Miller
> The people on the coasts don't get any benefit out of rural broadband initiatives

Don't they though? Those are new potential customers and users. ie. market growth?

Ohn0··on How America Became “A City Upon a Hill”: The Rise and Fall of Perry Miller
That's like, your opinion man.

With "All of the private wealth sloshing around needs a home" there are lots of homeless who needs a home?

Ohn0··on How America Became “A City Upon a Hill”: The Rise and Fall of Perry Miller
Wow I missed that. Does the author profit from sales of the book in addition to being paid to write it?
Ohn0··on How America Became “A City Upon a Hill”: The Rise and Fall of Perry Miller
Is it really the governments job to fund culture? I think there are plenty of folks willing to contribute without the need for tax dollars.

Ohn0··on A Mathematician’s Apology
Sounds like the beginning of excluding women from stem.
Ohn0··on Dropbox ignore file or folder in beta
For dropbox, which was mainly a user focused solution to sharing files, this seems like a very unfriendly solution to ignoring files?
Ohn0··on A town that floods with raw sewage every time it rains
Can someone explain to me how this problem is related to "areas made uninhabitable by climate change"?

I mean, is this a poverty issue, a race issue, a taxation / government issue, or a climate change issue? Or many or all of the above?

Ohn0··on Sovereign: Ansible playbooks to build and maintain your own private cloud
It's using ansible to setup and configure a bunch of open source applications for common "cloud" apps like email, files, rss, etc.
Ohn0··on Picardy Third
Good point on the budget.

But even if you submitted a "fix" to the foundation, somehow I imagine that it wouldn't be adopted, for reasons.

Ohn0··on 23andMe lays off 100 people as DNA test sales decline
Good point. I just have a hard time thinking of a non-elective surgery as an "industry".

Maybe we could make it elective and pump those numbers up to grow the addressable market size to all Americans

Ohn0··on Banning facial recognition is missing the point
Interesting he mentions festivals banning it. There's a startup in LA who's trying to add facial recognition to ticket gates of large venues like stadiums for both security and marketing. I wonder how 50,000 people think about being facially recognized / tracked just to go see the ball game or concert?
