OneOneOneOne··on Figuring out round, floor and ceil with integer division
Thanks to the author for describing everything so clearly!
OneOneOneOne··on Will We Ever Run Out of Sudoku Puzzles?
Any good sites for super difficult sudoku?
OneOneOneOne··on C++ Cheat Sheets
Looks like cauchy_distribution chart curve annotations are wrong?
OneOneOneOne··on LaTeX Cookbook – Collection of LaTeX Recipes
I love my 86 Lamport. The cartoons add such a nice touch.
OneOneOneOne··on Aging Parents with Lots of Stuff, and Children Who Don’t Want It
I've wondered where this stuff ends up after donating to charity. Is there a set of less fortunate people that could really make use of these things? Are there people eager to add more of these items to their "collections?" Do the charities end up discarding large percentages of this stuff?
OneOneOneOne··on American energy use
> the carbon tax can either substitute other taxes or the revenue from it can be returned to tax-payers in some form

I would be surprised if carbon tax payments offset some other taxes.

OneOneOneOne··on GNU bc ends 11-year beta test, releases 1.7
In bc 10 / 3 => 3

It yields integer values unless started with -l option. What's up with that?

OneOneOneOne··on Amazon's Tepid Response to Counterfeiters Frustrates Sellers
Try ebay. They seem to take negative feedback more seriously.
OneOneOneOne··on Adventures in the land of substrings and RegExps
I can recommend Mastering Regular Expressions by Jeffrey Friedl. He goes into great detail on regexp performance and the reason various expressions are slow.

I picked up an older revision from abebooks or ebay. The Python 2.7 online docs recommend revision 1 and states later revs don't cover Python.

OneOneOneOne··on Handwritten coding sheets for Burroughs 205 Algol (1960) [pdf]
He talks about this here... http://www.webofstories.com/play/donald.knuth/27
OneOneOneOne··on Kung Fu, Once Central to Hong Kong Life, Is Waning
Not sure grappling is a great idea with a gun on your hip.
OneOneOneOne··on Apple is currently holding $181 billion overseas
This article references an interview found in the Washington Post... https://www.washingtonpost.com/classic-apps/stepping-out-of-...

In that interview Mr. Cook says "We’ve said at 40 percent, we’re not going to bring it back until there’s a fair rate."

I wonder what he considers a fair rate?

OneOneOneOne··on Not Saying Winter Is Coming, but Where’s Your Coat?
> someone with a lot more money than you decided that they couldn't make a better return than financing your home loan

I'm not sure this is how fractional reserve banking works. Banks only supply a fraction of depositors money against a mortgage with the majority supplied by the fed. They basically make their money by investing other peoples money (including fed "imaginary" money) and by keeping a relatively low default rate.

OneOneOneOne··on The 2016 Top Programming Languages
I wonder if Python's rise in popularity has reduced shell scripting? Python has even displaced AWK in my tool use.
OneOneOneOne··on Pokémon GO: The Data Behind America’s Latest Obsession
Kind of bad for those in low population areas... but from Niantic's perspective they are going after a larger market.
OneOneOneOne··on George Soros Was ‘Long’ on Pound Before Vote on Brexit
All the short sighted articles are surprising. It is uncertain whether the "brexit" is better long term solution for the UK. Taking a look at the stock market a day after the vote is not going to show the true impact.

Mr Soros's comment reflects my current opinion...

“Britain eventually may or may not be relatively better off than other countries by leaving the EU, but its economy and people stand to suffer significantly in the short to medium term,”

OneOneOneOne··on The tyranny of the Hollerith punched card
For code it also seems most of the text reside on the left. Opening an extra wide window to display text for the occasional long line seems a waste of screen space.
OneOneOneOne··on Learn the ways of Linux-fu, for free
Good point. Does anyone have a good web based bookmark tool? I hop between a dozen machines on different networks so keeping bookmarks is kind of tedious.
OneOneOneOne··on A basic forking server in Oberon-2
> In the code the link points to, I just see another C-like language.

To be fair Oberon's roots go back to Pascal and not C. Pascal predates C.

:)

OneOneOneOne··on Hidden motors in cycling: Van den Dreissche banned for 6 years, titles stripped
None of those guys showed up with a 'motorcycle.'

Granted the motor didn't do all the work. I think she would have used a more powerful motor if she could have gotten away with it.

OneOneOneOne··on Hidden motors in cycling: Van den Dreissche banned for 6 years, titles stripped
Part of me wonders why only 6 years.

It doesn't seem like someone who would do this has much respect for the sport.

OneOneOneOne··on [dead]
Getting up early is the only way for those with small children.
OneOneOneOne··on Lightroom $4K iMac VS $4K PC performance test
In their situation I think processing time is the bottleneck or at least a major factor. They probably see every penny back in productivity gains.
OneOneOneOne··on Develop the three great virtues of a programmer: laziness, impatience, and hubris
Really nice site for small screens!
OneOneOneOne··on IRS Security
That's not all. I think you have to pay an additional fee if your assets are >2M...

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/youd-have-to...

I'm not planning on leaving or have assets in the range. It seems like kind of a ripoff though.

Last time I checked citizenship was optional... though how could one give up their mother country?
OneOneOneOne··on Subscription Pricing Is for Stagnating Products
I wonder if it makes sense to provide cloud and noncloud versions with the cloud version priced higher to fund cloud services.
OneOneOneOne··on Golden Rules for Making Money (1880)
Debt breeds debt it seems.
OneOneOneOne··on What we learned from failing as first-time founders
"Over 90% of startups fail."

Does anyone know the success rate for 2nd and 3rd attempts?

OneOneOneOne··on After Cash: All Fun and Games Until Somebody Loses a Bank Account
Electronic government controlled bank accounts seem like a good idea.

It is good our government would never violate our freedom.
