PMan74··on Accenture would cut 19,000 jobs
Content moderation is another one - farm it off to an external entity like Accenture to manage and you are at arms length from putting some poor content moderator in front of some pretty disturbing content.

PMan74··on Redwood World – Pictures and Locations of Redwoods in the British Isles
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not?

> Perhaps the Giant Redwood is an ideal tree to re-introduce as we are told that our climate is beginning to return to these types of conditions.

One of the justifications for reintroduction of Redwoods is a real gem.

PMan74··on Show HN: AI Background Remover
Seems to work well based on a quick trial on the web site.

Annoying that I seem to have to download the app to see how much it costs.

PMan74··on Nepalese student learns HTML, JavaScript, CSS using just a mobile phone
> in a matter of 5 years or so

Wouldn't anybody master a language in 5 years? I'm assuming you're talking about a situation where you are immersed in the language.

PMan74··on Cryptoqueen: A woman scammed the world, then vanished (2019)
Most people involved in tech aren't there for the tech, they only care about money they are making from it.

(And there's no judgement in that, if you make a living selling fridge freezers it doesn't mean you have to care much about fridge freezers)

PMan74··on One of the World’s Longest-Running Experiments Sends Up Sprouts
Sowing wildflowers is becoming more popular here in Ireland. You can buy wildflower mixes or seed bombs but the expert view is to just stop mowing, there are enough dormant seeds in the soil. And those that are present are generally more suitable to the local environment than anything you'd introduce.

Reassuring as you say.

PMan74··on World's busiest international and domestic air routes
OAG aggregate timetable data from airlines and distribute that aggregated feed.

You'll note their data is "seats" not "passengers" i.e. if an A380 flies from London to Dubai they count that as 525 seats as opposed to however many people took the flight.

PMan74··on Uber discovered they’d been defrauded out of 2/3 of their ad spend

PMan74··on Toddlers who use touchscreens show attention differences
> Society has long preached that things like reading books is great for kids

Wasn't always the case, Plato felt it would dull your memory.

"They will cease to exercise memory because they rely on that which is written, calling things to remembrance no longer from within themselves, but by means of external marks."

PMan74··on Show HN: I built an After Effects for dummies
Bingo, right now, I use Kapwing for basic video editing, very easy to do the basics and the results are good enough for what I need.

No way I'd spend the time to come up to speed with Adobe to do the same things.

PMan74··on Microsoft now credits maker of AppGet but offers no apology
> They cannot legally admit they looked at his code and copied the structure, because that opens them up to a copyright suit.

AppGet is released under Apache License 2.0, Winget under MIT, I'm not sure how copyright would be an issue.

AppGet's author addresses that point here

PMan74··on How to start a blog using Hugo
I've a few sites on Hugo. If you're not an active developer (like me) you can deploy a site from a Netlify template and tweak from there. So pretty much the opposite of "zero to deployment" - gives you something working to start with.

PMan74··on Some users say they're getting rid of Fitbit because they don't trust Google
27 million active Fitbit users at end of 2018.

"Several" say they are getting rid of the devices because of a lack of trust in Google. How many constitutes "several" is left for the reader to calculate. 27? 270? 2,700?

Poor journalism.

PMan74··on No Shenanigans
Agile manifesto nailed that

Through this work we have come to value:

Individuals and interactions over processes and tools Working software over comprehensive documentation Customer collaboration over contract negotiation Responding to change over following a plan

That is, while there is value in the items on the right, we value the items on the left more.

PMan74··on WeWork says will file to withdraw IPO

PMan74··on Facebook's fake account problem
Which is the bit I don't get. Even if FB say they have a trillion users, so what. Advertisers will advertise and pay based on the results they are seeing just like you did.

Eric Schmidt made pretty much the same point about Google fake clicks.

https://searchenginewatch.com/sew/news/2058286/eric-schmidt-...

Granted this is trickier if you don't have an easy way to determine if your advert has converted to a result e.g. somebody who is just looking to raise brand awareness.

PMan74··on How is it like to be a dev in Iran
> very warm and welcoming people

I'd second this, one of the friendliest country I've ever been to. No significant tourist industry yet so most people are not trying to sell you anything. I think it's a genuine wish to be friendly to travellers and especially so given they don't yet get many travellers.

You're somewhat curtailed as a US traveller (not sure if that's still the case) but for anybody else, go.

One tech curiosity from over there: one guy said he used a USB stick that contained his browser and stored his internet history on the stick when in internet cafes (his only way online). That way when the cafe was audited none of his data would be there for inspection by police/security.

PMan74··on Dallas Has Now Lost 82 Cases Against Robert Groden (2016)
In fairness it's not like the site wasn't already world famous. I'm not even American and I know of it and have been there. The city's (farcical) efforts are not making the site more famous.
PMan74··on We got banned from PayPal after 12 years of business
You'd hope at this stage, based on various PayPal horror stories, businesses would not need this warning.

> Do not kid yourself – your business is never, never

> safe with PayPal. Move away or at least have a plan B

> in place so that you don’t lose your business over

> their arbitrary actions.

They all read like riff on The Trial: you've been banned, we're not going to tell you why, this is going to cost you money.

PMan74··on 1060-hour image of the Large Magellanic Cloud captured by amateur astronomers
Does anybody know how expensive the setup described is?

- Remotely-controlled observatory at the El Sauce Observatory in Chile

- A 160-mm APO-refractor telescope and a Moravian CCD

- Presumably hefty image processing requirements

- etc.

I get that these guys are amateurs in that they are not being paid for this but presumably this costs some serious money? Or are the components they use in reach of a well to do hobbyist these days (all relative I know)?

PMan74··on Uber S-1
> it seemed like he did a really exceptional job profitably growing Expedia.

Expedia comes a distant second Booking Holdings. https://finance.yahoo.com/quotes/EXPE,BKNG/view/v1

So while he may have done well, he didn't do as well as the competition.

PMan74··on Why are tech companies making custom typefaces?
> Actually the content of the article makes this comment slightly unwarranted

I don't think his/her frustration was with the article, rather with some of the HN comments on the article.

PMan74··on China blacklists millions from booking flights as 'social credit' introduced
The Black Mirror system reminded me more of Uber: drivers doing the utmost to ingratiate themselves to passengers for fear of losing their livelihood through a few bad scores.
PMan74··on Plane drops to 928 feet after autopilot set to 0 altitude
"An Air Accidents Investigation Branch report said warnings alerted the pilot, who fixed the error at 928ft (283m)."

It's odd, you'd think that the sensation of dropping 500ft (152m) in 18 seconds would have alerted him, especially after take off. It's hard to visualise what that would feel like.

PMan74··on Algorithmic merchandising will erode trust in Amazon
> most likely a fluke

I'd agree, probably not helped by the fact that the $9 item is a 2-pack.

Never ascribe to malice that which is can be explained by stupidity.

Stupidity might be a bit harsh here though.
