PNewling··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
I've often wondered what the best way to do this, if the goal was to bring over only top tier talent. I've heard it floated it could be a bidding system instead of a lottery (countered with the fact that only the biggest firms would be able to bid high enough to bring people in), but I'm not an economist so I don't know how that would all shake out.

I think I'm more just speaking out loud here: what is the optimal way to do this that allows a capped influx of talented outside workers, that doesn't allow "degree mills"?

I don't have an answer, but I honestly wonder. Some of the green card folks I've worked with (I know that is different, or at least I think it is in the grand scheme of things?) have been some of the smartest people I've worked with.

...Fair, I completely misread it. I'm going to blame it on the jet lag, but your comment is accurate and my response is off-base. My bad.

> Laurelhurst

I can’t tell if this is a ‘whoosh’ over my head or what, but saying Laurelhurst is more affordable than just about anywhere besides Medina is wild. They literally had enough sway to have the hospital reroute their flights (it was actually a children’s hospital and they got enough flack about it only this year did they relent [0]).

PNewling··on Fable 5 is Back
I think that is a little bit disingenuous, Guinness just saw it as a trade secret. Not something that was too dangerous to release to the public for the public's own 'good', just that it could be bad for their business.
PNewling··on Digital euro clears key hurdle as EU seeks to break free from U.S. credit cards
As an outsider: which countries lean which way? I'm curious how things trend where and I didn't even really know that debit was used by a majority in certain places (Countries? Regions? Historical based delimiters?).
PNewling··on Cars collect a startling amount of data about you
This is a very pithy comment so I apologize in advance, and I agree with you completely, but all I can think at this moment is:

"The real Roko's Basilisk is the corporate surveillance state we made along the way"

PNewling··on The stagnancy of publishing and the disappearance of the midlist
Not that this is the perfect fix, but at least for sci-fi books you can usually look the Hugo Award winners[0] for ones that are solid. Not all of them are my cup of tea, but I have found that I definitely love some of the series that are found there. I'm sure there are other award types per genre that could help point you to some as well. Not that these can't be gamed, or sponsored or whatever, but at least it is a good starting point that is (¿maybe?) less prone to bot bias campaigns.

PNewling··on Are we tired of social media? (2025)
I did this, and yeah google maps is all but unusable without color, that and the camera takes some getting used to.

I'm on an iPhone, but what ended up doing was creating a shortcut that toggles the phone to grayscale and back, and then having two automations, one for when I open any of the apps I actually want color in (maps, camera, photos, etc) that toggles grayscale off and then another automation to toggle grayscale back on when I close any of those same apps.

The option is located in Settings > Accessibility >Display & Text Size > Color Filters

It isn't perfect, but it works most of the time (I also added the shortcut to the back of the home screen so if it is off or I need one-off color I can just toggle it manually).

PNewling··on Migrating the main Zig repository from GitHub to Codeberg
Wow, and if you go to their website listed in they're profile, not only do almost none of the links work, the one that did just linked out to the generic template that it was straight copied from. Wow.

PNewling··on Mammals Evolved into Ant Eaters 12 Times Since Dinosaur Age, Study Finds
Your username makes me think you'd be a good person to ask:

Sorry, what? (Edit, this sounds like I don't believe you, but it is more that I am in disbelief!) Ants evolved from stinging wasps? Were they flying at that time? Or were wasps at some point non-flying and the 'wasps' grouping is a wide one like 'beetles' is?

This is such a fascinating space I know very little about.

PNewling··on I'm switching to Python and actually liking it
Funny enough I feel the other way about JetBrains IDEs. They * seem * super powerful, but there is always a lot of config that needs to go into them if I'm doing app, infra, and pipeline work. (Edit, not saying they aren't powerful, just more that as coming into them I'm never sure how to wield it the best out of the box)

In my experience (not saying this is universal), the folks that like JetBrains IDEs came from java/intellij backgrounds, where I hear it really shines.

This all might be a skill issue, as almost all my professional projects have been VSCode based, but since I've only worked at smaller places I definitely can't rule out this was because it was easier to set things up than to fight for Fin to get us all licences.

In your opinion, what makes PyCharm (or CLion if you want to add that in) 'just work'? Do you think it is because you've used it for so long and just know the ins-and-outs? Or is there something you see that they have and VSCode doesn't?

I've always been curious about this as someone who hasn't had a lot of professional exposure to the JetBrains world.

PNewling··on Google Cloud Incident Report – 2025-06-13
Not sure if you'll get an answer (I'd be interesting in a response as well), but from the blog in their profile it looks like they moved to be a 'member of technical staff working in the AI Reliability Engineering (AIRE) team at Anthropic'. So it might have just been an upward move to something different/more-exciting.
PNewling··on Amelia Earhart's Reckless Final Flights
These are all incredible stories. I appreciate you sharing them with us.

PNewling··on Why we still can't stop plagiarism in undergraduate computer science (2018)
Some certifications I’ve taken make you do a full room scan, including using a mirror to see the computer itself if you’re using a laptop, to ensure there is nothing you could cheat with. Normally a human reviews it before they open the test for you. In addition they have you install a browser extension that fails a check if there is more than one monitor along with a host of other items.

These are obviously extreme measures, but it is possible to try and enforce enhanced levels of proctoring. And I’m not saying I like the idea of doing this for all coding interviews, just that I guarantee people would go through with this if it meant a chance to get into big tech.

PNewling··on The AI jobs crisis is here, now
From the state of Duolingo, I think we've already passed that point by a bit. And I'm not even a huge AI-replacement-alarmist. It's more that Duolingo is not optimal (or even good/great) at teaching language. I will give it its due, it does help with vocabulary memorization.
