Pay08··on Emacs vs. Vim 2026: 24.3% vs. 8% Usage, 20x Memory Gap
I tend to ssh in as root, but TRAMP also supports escalating with su, sudo, or sudoedit (or doas).
Pay08··on The Nixpkgs core team has disbanded
apt-list on said Ubuntu system.

> Nixpkgs is one of, if not the largest, package managers by # of packages.

I'm fairly certain that the graph you're thinking of is complete bullshit. It only had approximately a third of the package count listed for a particular Ubuntu version than said version had in actuality.

Drama certainly doesn't seem to be a problem for GNU.
Pay08··on The Nixpkgs core team has disbanded
Isn't nixpkgs still a pretty bad state? I know there used to be a lot of "abandoned" packages that went years without updating to the new versions provided by upstream, that a lot of packages were copying binaries around instead of building open source software from the source, etc.
Pay08··on Rune 1.1: adds Python, an Emacs editor, a symbol index and is now free
And often, that Emacs keybinding emulation is incredibly incomplete. For example, Matlab's Emacs emulation doesn't have M-w bound and I believe C-k doesn't copy, it only kills. And the emulation is the default setting on Linux.
Pay08··on Wikimedia Foundation refuses union recognition, hires union-busting law firm
What truly grinds my gears about Wikipedia isn't the amount of false information but the amount of uncorroborated info. The amount of times I've read an article that made large, sweeping claims about something and then not have any citations, often not even a "citation needed" box should be frankly unacceptable.

Not to mention the heaps of economic research showing that there are quite a lot of benefits to the existence of billionaires.
Pay08··on Wikimedia Foundation refuses union recognition, hires union-busting law firm
I do find it interesting how pretty much none of Wikipedia's organisational controversies and institutional deterioration (a lot of which have been going on for ~20 years) really made it out to the general public.
Pay08··on Go 1.27 Interactive Tour
I was about to mention Haskell as well, I feel like it also avoids this sort of cognitive load. Maybe it's something to do with the languages being designed as functional languages instead of languages with functional components.
Pay08··on Big Food vs. the People
1. Medics aren't hospitals. Nor are they any other building for that matter.

2. There's literally an exception right there in the singular sentence you linked to.

Pay08··on A big win for Android interoperability
The EU has approximately 110 million more people than the USA.

Lisp manages it. Even if you do use type annotations.
Pay08··on Big Food vs. the People
Yes, they're saying that some members of MSF aren't neutral, which risks the perception of the whole organisation. That's a mile away from saying the organisation is political.
Pay08··on Big Food vs. the People
You explicitly can. Like come on, the law specifically says as much.
Pay08··on Big Food vs. the People
The article doesn't back up your comment.
Pay08··on Arch Linux disables AUR package adoption
It's been a while since I've seen software that provides an INSTALL.sh.
Pay08··on Arch Linux disables AUR package adoption
And they're incredibly unpopular.

The entire problem is that people weren't inspecting PKGBUILDs. At least with user repositories, you have someone who can build a reputation for trustworthy packages. There's a reason why every other distro does user repos.

Pay08··on Arch Linux disables AUR package adoption
Or, have actual user repos like a normal distro.
Pay08··on Arch Linux disables AUR package adoption
> Really disabling adoptions is probably step 1 to just EOLing the whole thing.

That's what they should do. The AUR has been a giant fuckup since the beginning, which is especially outrageous seeing as they had the perfect template for it with Gentoo's GURU.

Pay08··on Danube's record low levels force shutdown of Hungary's only nuclear plant
I believe there was also a planned much cheaper retrofit to use pumps to increase force to necessary levels but it was scrapped.
Pay08··on Codeberg Divides
Can the LLM also materialise a server and free electricity for me?
Pay08··on Codeberg Divides
Not to mention what happens when these rules cease to be rules on purely technical matters. What if they make a rule against the site allowing hosting the code *of* AI agents for example?
Pay08··on Writing by hand is good for your brain

Pay08··on Elixir-lang.org has a new design
This is how every second website has looked for the past 10 years.
Pay08··on How to hide from killer drones
That's a completely different thing from AI drones or whatever (not to mention that I wouldn't trust anything the Guardian puts out, not to mention that magazine).
Pay08··on How to hide from killer drones
This is just complete fantasy.

> Is there any evidence suggesting that Ukraine is targeting civilians?

Don't you know that big bad Ukraine forced innocent little Russia into this war?! (Do I need to add the sarcasm mark?)

> but you seem to think that getting their own soldiers killed was their goal..?

Actually, to some extent, that is the case. Russia has been conscripting violent criminals (generally murderers and rapists), who, unlike normal prisoners getting conscripted, don't have a way to "earn" their freedom and are instead sent into the proverbial meat grinder.

Pay08··on How to hide from killer drones
How so?
