Psype··on We should be more ambitious with the software we build
The title alone give me chills. Software evolution follows the means, not the need. Nowadays we make laggy systems with 1000x the available computation we had twenty years ago.

I want something reliable and fast before having something fancy. I want control over my stuff instead of a company telling me what to install and what not to. I want to feel that I own my stuff, not that I'm using someone else's hardware.

Psype··on Web Search API
Just make an indexed cache of it instead of storing it
Psype··on 25 years of mass surveillance is enough
Nowadays there's a lot of Muslims practicing their faith very differently from what most do. They might drink or smoke, and live a more "flexible" version, their own version of their own faith.

Even if, in fine, you are right despite the downvotes. Islam is also a political and legal system that cannot cohabit with another system (no system can cohabit with another one, you can't have a democracy and a dictature at the same place)

Psype··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
This might be a hot-take, but unfortunately here using AI for your paper was already a bad decision at first.

It doesn't take OpenAI's responsibilities away but I guess the right way is to never feed of use any AI around unpublished content, at the known cost to see it spread around.

As one said, OpenAO is like this untrustworthy colleague that knows everything about everyone at work: the less you tell him the better.

Psype··on Hang on to Your Firefox
Firefox is getting milked for profit by a few individuals. User data collection, personalized ads and such for profit, while the CEO's paycheck exploded in 15 years.
Psype··on Google details new 24-hour process to sideload unverified Android apps
it also makes it urgent to have a platform with leverage under 3-5 years, with a whole lot of countries pushing for digital ID globally.
Psype··on AWS raises GPU prices 15% on a Saturday, hopes you weren't paying attention
You will own nothing and be happy.

Also check the agenda 2030. The European digital wallet. The cyberscore.

All those elements together makes a digital Europe (and more) where there's no cash anymore, where your website has to be compliant to be working with EU's ID and payments systems.

It's going to be all centralised and about subscriptions, no matter if it's about your electricity bill or your groceries.

Psype··on Bring bathroom doors back to hotels
Terrain, terrain.
Psype··on Nano Banana can be prompt engineered for nuanced AI image generation
What's wrong then? It is definitely true from user experience.
Psype··on Nano Banana can be prompt engineered for nuanced AI image generation
That article says that most image generators had been over-shadowed by gpt.

Yet when I ask some simple tasks to it, like doing a 16:9 picture sized image instead of a square one, it ends up doing a 16:9 on a white background that matches a square.

When I ask it to make it with text, then on the second request to redo while changing just a certain visual element, it ends up breaking the previously asked text.

It's getting more good at flattering people and telling them how clever and right they are than actually doing the task.

Psype··on Launch HN: Electric Air (YC W23) – Heat pump sold directly to homeowners
You can either go using open source protocols at first or at least guarantee open-sourcing most of it in case of leadership change. For reuse.

I'd go starting with it and let a community build by itself around it, tho.

Psype··on The FBI now recommends using an ad blocker when searching the web
I wish I'd have a plugin that makes the difference before/after accepting cookie consent, always accept, and always flush them between pages.

I know by experience that the key isn't about refusing them, but letting them having those "user accepted" KPI values, even if it goes nowhere behind.

Psype··on Tell HN: Whole Yandex Git repository leaked
Totally. Even the regular search is mostly made of selling links.

And in quantity, it seems like 9/10th of the content is gone.

Psype··on Tell HN: HP printers force you into agreement
There's still Ricoh. I literally found a big one in the streets that worked perfectly (I suppose the small company that was at this address needed something bigger).

Generic cartridges are just find and you refill them easily.

Psype··on Adobe charges subscription cancellation fee
No they don't.

The guy took an annual license which is cheaper than a monthly one, and paid with monthly payments.

As such, he engaged himself by paying the whole year, not only few months.

Cancelling out means he has to complete the annual payment, which is of course due, according the what he signed for.

Psype··on Phones and apps reduce your ability to focus even when they don’t distract you
Get a smartwatch. Not kidding.

It might sound stupid, but since I have a smartwatch and only filter the mot important notifications on it (calls, SMS), all other notifications can sit on my phone & wait for hours. Whatever. I still can be reached in an emergency.

I don't event check my phone to get the time, duh, that's a watch !

Psype··on Fire declared in OVH SBG2 datacentre building
Been there, done that.

The 2nd worst thing, IF you happen to catch it soon and control it, is that the temp raise triggers many alerts and automatic controls.

So when it's controlled, it's still a real nightmare. Here, firemen could not even control it...

Psype··on A Warning to Users of NurseryCam
Hello, NO. > ANYONE CAN SPY ON YOUR CHILDREN

No one said that except you. You shuld get less into the technical, and more into the actual reading.

Psype··on Pidgin – A Universal Chat Client
I discovered Pidgin in 2010. We could use chat system via a plug-in, and out school were using their "own" protocol for an internal chat system, AKA NetSoul. You either had the choice of the CLI NetSoul client, a GTK one not-so-great, or a plug-in into that awesome thing that is Pidgin.

Nowadays I use it For Lync, the Business version of Skype.

Psype··on Tell HN: Dropbox now requires access to contacts for Google login
Actually, ads on Prime videos are for their other shows, and skippable. I discovered nice shows that way. But I agree, we should have at least 2 easy options in settings:

- Never show ads for other shows - Always skip opening themes

Psype··on Pirate Bay founder thinks Parler’s inability to stay online is 'embarrassing'
There is no political profile for CS engineers.

The founder's motto was literally "Hack the planet"...

Indeed, that's not to be compared with TPB enthusiast's taste for hack and passion for CS things, but don't underestimate "right wing" techies...

Psype··on Amazon, Apple and Google Cut Off Parler
Let the time speaking by itself. Parler will end up in court.

Why ? Because for years, Trump's administration (I don't recall but maybe Obama's also) is fighting against "Fake News", forcing platforms to do fact checking "or else".

A new platform emerging, promoting its lack of control over that will irremediably leads to huge abuses and scandals. It's just a matter of time.

A massive scandal over a year, a closure over two or three tops.

Psype··on Show HN: I made an alternative platform for professional profiles
Hi @_andychung, have you ever considered jsonresume ? Personally I use it to generate my CV on various templates.
Psype··on No Cookie for You
Legitimate interest exists, and we use it at work. But because I work in the field of security, and for the sake of our infrastucture, we log specific informations and might drop a mandatory cookie at a time.

Everything outside that field cannot, I guess, be considered as legitimate interest.

Psype··on Facebook to move UK users to California terms, avoiding EU privacy rules
> How FB would know about it? In a matter of fact GDPR applies to people in EU, and data processed in EU.

It also states that data from people in EU has to be processed and stored in the EU.

It's not a matter of citizenship nor residency. Facebook just geo-locate you IP endpoint (so endpoint of your VPN) and manage your data by doing so. So USA rules will apply.

BUT if you are browsing websites hosted in Europe, EU rules will apply to your data.
