R1D3R··on The Hackintosh Reborn
How is this sentiment annoying to you? People want Linux on good hardware, how is that annoying to you?
R1D3R··on Search for everyone
Kagi pays Yandex for search results. It's only one of many inputs but some of the money you pay to Kagi does go to Russia. Kagi's stance on this is that product quality is more important than "geopolitics". It's an extremely disappointing take to use "geopolitics" as a euphemism for "supporting genocide and wars of aggression", which is what doing business with any Russian entity is.

Natural gas pipelines are not a personal choice. Subscription services are.
R1D3R··on Stringman, an $800 open-source room scale gripper robot
The line doesn't have a 28 newton breaking strength. That's the point at which the motors release. The line itself is presumably much stronger.

Ah, that does seem better.

You are extremely mistaken. The linked page literally has a "add to cart" button front and center.

Toddlers exist in homes. It is their natural habitat. Keeping them away seems like a reasonable precaution. I'm glad we agree on that.
R1D3R··on Stringman, an $800 open-source room scale gripper robot
The lines are anchored to the wall. There's no tension release on that. The gripper in the middle of the room unwinding some line won't prevent you, your child, or a pet from hanging themselves from the anchored end.
R1D3R··on Stringman, an $800 open-source room scale gripper robot
How far will they release? Is that physical or software? If the line is wrapped around my neck and anchored to the wall how does the motor releasing help me? I can see industrial applications but it seems like a dangerous thing to have in a home.
R1D3R··on Stringman, an $800 open-source room scale gripper robot
> Can it kill you? no probably not. The tension limit kicks in and lets the line out if you pull too hard.

Is there a physical safety? The anchors are attached to the wall, do they release with less tension than a human airway can withstand? I have experienced injuries that would prohibit me from exerting a "backpack" of force over my head.

R1D3R··on macOS 27 does not support CoreStorage volumes
Apple software updates are always a downgrade. It's an opportunity to abuse customers that Apple just can't resist. If you're lucky all they do is break your muscle memory by moving buttons pointlessly.
R1D3R··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
I don't know, you're the one that brought up the military. And now you're bringing up people writing about the military. It's very difficult to follow.

> TCO is more than just oil changes.

Yeah, duh. EVs still have fewer maintenance items than ICE vehicles. How is this even a talking point anymore?

If you aren't arguing the best positions then I'm bored. There's an infinite number of bad arguments.
R1D3R··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
What relevance does this have? We don't live in a militaristic society. Most people have no military experience at all.

There's also Lal. But one or three androids still isn't comparable to the widespread effects of AI today or a refutation of notlion's comment.
R1D3R··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
I don't think you have adequately steel-manned the current anti-AI sentiments. I encourage you to consider more deeply why people would be opposed to AI as it exists in our current regulatory, political, and social climate.

As a starting point:

Business leadership is giddy to replace workers with AI.

Investors are eager to roll out massive resource-intensive and locally polluting industrial installations.

Politicians are eager to rubber-stamp these developments without community input, bypassing existing regulation and failing to satisfy or even address community concerns.

The defense industry is recklessly employing this emerging technology to make life and death decisions, already resulting in the deaths of innocents.

I also think you should fundamentally reconsider your comparison. Data is a singular being, not a widespread new technology. The only similarity between Data and 2026 LLMs is that they are not biological.

I don't know if it was written during a strike. It was submitted speculatively and produced during a strike.

> It was written as a speculative script by former attorney and Star Trek: The Original Series novelist Melinda M. Snodgrass.

> The script was accepted due to the impact of the 1988 Writers Guild of America strike, and resulted in Snodgrass being recruited as a staff writer and script editor. She would remain on the staff until the end of the third season.

Clip shows are a strong indicator. Some of the best episodes are writers strike episodes though. Measure of a Man was a speculative script selected for production during a writer’s strike and is one of the first great episodes of the show.

What do you mean by post-Roddenberry? Most of the TNG era was created without his direct input.
R1D3R··on Patrick Stewart has died
He survived at least three plane crashes. He crashed on takeoff in a B-17. Two of his crew were killed. He later survived a crash as a passenger. He crashed again as a commercial pilot.

The 8th Air Force suffered heavy losses over Europe but I don't believe Roddenberry served there. He was in the Pacific and after his B-17 crash stayed in the mainland US.

This news has me so emotionally compromised that I actually signed up for Paramount Plus.

> Gene Roddenberry was in the Navy

No, he wasn’t. He was a B-17 pilot in the Army Air Force.

R1D3R··on I went to Mexico to test-drive the cars Americans can’t buy
No chance an ICE vehicle can go 10 years without an oil change. Spark plugs, coils, fuel injectors, and filters will all degrade in that time, diminishing range.
R1D3R··on I went to Mexico to test-drive the cars Americans can’t buy
How are people still spouting this nonsense? EVs are more reliable than ICE vehicles. We know this from experience.

This is such a pathetic cliche. The differences are clear. If you don’t see them it’s because you’re trying not to.
R1D3R··on Police are using AI to pull over drivers for 'suspicious' behavior
I would definitely bat an eye at cops acting like human flock cameras. That sounds like an incredible waste of resources.

No, he is avoiding them. He was found guilty of 34 felonies related to election interference in the Stormy Daniels hush money case. Judge Juan Merchan declined to sentence him to any punishment whatsoever. He was then re-elected president. He will never face any consequences for those crimes.

The Supreme Court has ruled that (Republican) presidents are above the law. Official actions can't be prosecuted, but you have to ask the court what official means on a case-by-case basis, making the ruling implicitly partisan. Trump will thus never face consequences for his crimes in office.

Trump is an admitted (Access Hollywood) and convicted (E Jean Carroll) sexual predator. He has paid several million dollars to E Jean Carroll for raping her but that is the extent of any consequence he has suffered. He continues to be president.
