RandomBookmarks··on Tesla Model S and Model 3 comparison
No, at least not for me: My plan is buying the Model 3 and then engaging the autopilot in such a case - and just travel behind whoever is driving with 130 km/h in front of me.

So for me - a reliable autopilot for the Autobahn is much more important than the top speed.

Yeah. Can anyone comment on the trustworthiness of this blog post? I also do not understand what is there to negotiate (except storage fees).
RandomBookmarks··on Show HN: WrapAPI v2 – Build APIs, scrapers, bots on any website
Yeah, the concept is the same as Sikuli, but all inside Chromium (and the OCR is better).

>Do you find it better than Phantom?

It depends. Once you have a working script, web scraping with Phantom is much faster and much more resource efficient. But since Kantu works visually, you do not have to touch any page source code. That makes it much easier/faster to create the automation in the first place, especially for complex sites with date controls, drag & drop and other Javascript.

If JS a problem for you, try Kantu. It works with screenshots and uses OCR for scraping. The beauty is that it works with any kind of site. But clearly, the speed can not match a node.js or perl based scraper (mechanize etc), so it is not suitable for high volumes.

Interesting... how does this compare to https://a9t9.com/kantu/scraping ?

WrapApi seems to tackle the same task (web scraping) from a very different angle. I wonder if anyone has used both and can compare.

RandomBookmarks··on Why Recorded/Playback Tests in Selenium Break
The thing is, "programming" tests might be the most robust solution if you know how to do it - but it also can be a waste of developer time. In the end, you spend your time on debugging the tests itself...

In my experience, record and playback can work well. Especially visual, screenshot-based solutions like Sikuli or Kantu are actually more stable then most developers think. And the beauty of them is that they can also be used by non-developers, i. e. "manual testers", so the developers can actually work on the main product, not the test suite.

There is Kantu: https://www.a9t9.com/kantu/web-automation

It uses screenshots and OCR to automate web browsing and scraping, to you do not even have to "touch" the DOM. What you do is you simply draw a frame around the areas that you need to have extracted and OCR'ed. It also works with PDFs.

RandomBookmarks··on Chrome 59 has cross-platform headless support
For complex pages, there is Kantu, which is based on Chromium: https://www.a9t9.com/kantu/web-automation

Not headless, but ideally suited for automating complex websites (date controls, etc).

You need to compare apples to apples:

The right benchmark for VSCode is not Visual Studio, but Notepad++ (5.9MB on my system right now).

RandomBookmarks··on Web Scraping: Bypassing “403 Forbidden,” captchas, and more
Not open-source but free: Kantu (https://kantu.io) uses OCR to support web scraping. You mark an anchor image/text with a green frame and mark the area of data that needs to be extracted with pink frames. The image inside the pink frames is then sent to https://ocr.space for processing and Kantu api returns the extracted text. This works very well as long as you do not need a lot of data. It is certainly not a "high-speed" solution for scraping terabytes of data.

Or, as with any website without Api, you can use tools like Selenium or Kantu that automate a system via its web interface.
RandomBookmarks··on Show HN: PDFLayoutTextStripper – Converts PDF to text while keeping the layout
I would not call these services useless ;) - but I wonder the same... Some apis like https://ocr.space return the coordinates of each converted word. Can that be a used input? (I have not tried it yet)

This service has a very nice and honest "about" page: https://healthchecks.io/about/

RandomBookmarks··on Ask HN: Why do companies outside the US pay so much less?
This is rather easy for the typical HN crowd. For example, to get a working visa for Germany (Blue card) you "only" need to find a job that pays more than 50000 Euro/year. In a nutshell, that is all.

RandomBookmarks··on Microsoft Cognitive Services
Good news: You don't need to pay, because Microsoft OCR is available for free, nicely packaged as "DLL". The caveat: It currently supports only UWP (Universal Windows Platform) apps: https://blogs.windows.com/buildingapps/2016/02/08/optical-ch...

For a quick test, try https://ocr.space - a free ocr api that uses Microsoft OCR on the backend.

RandomBookmarks··on German Lawmakers Vote to Ban the Internal Combustion Engine
As with any startup, you need to look at the trend. And Germany's use of renewable energy is increasing year by year, as shown here:

On sunny summer days coal is down to 25% already, the day-by-day data is available here: https://www.energy-charts.de/power.htm

RandomBookmarks··on The Brexit Possibility
This chart is wrong in at least one line (probably many more): Norway pays about the same per capita as the UK does/did (source: interview of the german treasury secretary, Schauble).

So while the Norwegian model is a valid option - it does not save the UK a single Euro.
