Be sure to check out the middle "star" in Orion's sword.
RobMcCullough··on Show HN: Soundslice – YouTube + synced guitar tabs + HTML5
Translating pitch to a playable guitar tab would even more difficult than the pitch detection. Unlike the piano, the same note can be played in multiple places on the guitar neck. Auto-generating guitar tablature would require not only pitch detection, but some kind of logic that would pick the most appropriate string/fret depending on the surrounding notes/chords.
RobMcCullough··on NBCOlympics’ Opening Ceremony Tape Delay: Stupid, Stupid, Stupid
The sense of entitlement in the last few Olympics related posts is really getting obnoxious. Granted the article here makes a good point about it being silly to live tweet an event that is not being broadcast. But, everyone commenting seems to think watching the Olympics for free is a god given right.

I am excited that, unlike the NFL, MLB, and other professional sporting events, the live-streaming capability provided to NBC subscribers is actually quite thorough and high quality.

RobMcCullough··on Show HN: Feathers, blogless writing for everybody
Good to know. Thanks for answering my comment! I went ahead and signed up for the beta as you struck my curiosity with the writing environment teaser! As for my thoughts on removing old content, I get a kick out of going back through the websites I used to frequent and reading things I wrote. The pack-rat in me would prefer to always have access to my past work. But, I do understand the logic in wanting to keep all of the content fresh. Maybe you could remove it but provide an option to have an old piece salvaged for a small fee?
RobMcCullough··on Show HN: Feathers, blogless writing for everybody
Looks great! The design and typography are quite nice! I hate to be "that guy," but have you seen pen.io? Your site seems very similar. Also, what is the reasoning behind eventually removing articles. Is there an option to disable this feature?
RobMcCullough··on Act Bigger than You Are
I know right! There goes one of those Harvard Professors spouting out useless information again. Who in the world listens to them anyways!?

RobMcCullough··on Re-Designing the classic email client
Slightly unrelated but your portfolio webpage is absolutely gorgeous!
RobMcCullough··on The Ph.D Grind: A Ph.D Student Memoir
Thanks for sharing, I find your writing style very engrossing. As someone who doesn't have much experience in academia, I have a new level of respect for Professors and Ph.D.'s.
RobMcCullough··on FunnyJunk lawyer to subpoena Twitter, Ars Technica
Ooh, and the plot thickens! Just when I thought there could be no happy ending to this story!
RobMcCullough··on More Unfunny Junk
I have been trying extremely hard to give Carreon the benefit of the doubt and understand his reasoning. I am beginning to wonder if he perhaps has a touch Asbergers syndrome, or something of the sorts.

In reading his remarks, he is obviously thoughtful, well read, and genuinely believes himself. But, there seems to be a stark contrast between what is going on in his head and the "real" world. Regardless, this is the online equivalent to trashy reality T.V. and I can not seem to tear my attention away.

RobMcCullough··on Just Landed for iPhone helps you pick someone up from the airport.
I love the idea and the design work! When I was younger, my father would pay me the equivalent of a taxi to get him to and from the airport. Driving slow laps around the SFO terminal, wondering if the plane is even on the ground yet, was definitely a big problem.
RobMcCullough··on Ask HN: Has anyone put thought into the degradation of online communities?
Yes. I flirted with the idea of an online community with a half life. For example, every 6 months the URL would completely change and only the top 1% of members would be notified of the new location. It would be in their hands to repopulate the community.

I haven't figured out how to determine the top 1% but this was more a pipe dream a than serious potential project. Anyone is free to take the idea and run with it.

RobMcCullough··on Find Out If Your Startup Fails At SEO
I was looking at the 500Startups class list today, and I realized a lot of these guys are not doing any on page SEO! I am putting my feelers out to see if there is a micro-business to be made here.

RobMcCullough··on Why growing and preparing your own food is the future
This made me chuckle.
RobMcCullough··on Why growing and preparing your own food is the future
Just finished spending about $200 to get my garden going this year. I always look at it as an investment.
RobMcCullough··on An eruption from the Sun that happened today
Call me paranoid, but that just made my stomach drop.
RobMcCullough··on [dead]
Good eye, thank you! Fixed that up just now.

Looks like fun, gears are churning.
RobMcCullough··on Show HN: BetterYoo - Recurring Reminders In Your Pants
Yup, although I don't think the tagline was exclusive to Punchd. Maybe I mis-interpreted it, but I thought they were saying for all the mobile startups. Seeing as if the phone is in your pants...
RobMcCullough··on Show HN: BetterYoo - Recurring Reminders In Your Pants
I have a simple confirmation process to ensure the person signing up is actually the owner of the phone.
RobMcCullough··on Show HN: BetterYoo - Recurring Reminders In Your Pants
Frankly, I agree with you on the tricky aspect. I knew it was a competitive space when I started. Ultimately, I hope ease of use and good customer experience will be our strong point. I wouldn't try to set my Grandma up with Google Calendar, but I already have her using BetterYoo xD
RobMcCullough··on Show HN: BetterYoo - Recurring Reminders In Your Pants
Hi Nick, thanks for the kind words! It's running on LAMP. I did not use the Twilio API, although I am planning on using them later to enable BetterYoo to receive text messages. So far, I built it all myself.
RobMcCullough··on Show HN: BetterYoo - Recurring Reminders In Your Pants
Sorry about that =O - If you wouldn't mind e-mailing me the confirmation codes you received I can fix that up lickety split. rob [at] betteryoo [dot] com

I would really appreciate it!

RobMcCullough··on Show HN: Tap2Tab - Instantly Sends A Webpage From Computer to iPhone/Tablet
They'll have to choose another.
RobMcCullough··on Show HN: Tap2Tab - Instantly Sends A Webpage From Computer to iPhone/Tablet
Thank you
RobMcCullough··on Show HN: Tap2Tab - Instantly Sends A Webpage From Computer to iPhone/Tablet
Yup, I use it an love it. Despite the similarity Tap2Tab serves a totally different purpose. I mentioned it above but Tap2Tab works on Videos, Netflix, Youtube, Google Maps, ect. It doesn't alter the content at all, it just redirects you to the page.
RobMcCullough··on Show HN: Tap2Tab - Instantly Sends A Webpage From Computer to iPhone/Tablet
Nah, nothing fancy. Just a few lines of PHP and a meta tag refresh xD
RobMcCullough··on Show HN: Tap2Tab - Instantly Sends A Webpage From Computer to iPhone/Tablet
Ooh thank you! I hadn't thought of using it on Google Maps yet but that is a really good use case!
