RockingGoodNite··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
> The “political” polarization is part of it. The older folks bring it with them.

So, discriminatory, ageist, prejudicial comments are allowed on HN now? Or only if it's against "older folks", I see.

> I can't be the only one here who is both skeptical and a little turned off by someone who says "You can stick any user input into a database query and you'll be fine", with a condesending pat on my head.

Like how Google has worked the past 2 decades? OP said snippets then you gloriously paraphrased it into a completely different statement.

RockingGoodNite··on How boring should your team's codebases be
> How do you know that over time it won't grow into something terribly unmaintainable?

Like pretty much all Angular projects?

RockingGoodNite··on How boring should your team's codebases be
Agreed. Half of people want simple, maintainable solutions. The other half want complex solutions that people can glam onto, like how politics works.
RockingGoodNite··on Why doesn't Stripe use Stripe Billing?
>> Or perhaps more correctly, value is value.

So, Microsoft's own Dynamics offers no greater value than their competitor SAP, even within ... Microsoft.

RockingGoodNite··on Researchers find ‘significant rates’ of sinking ground in Houston suburbs
You can find a McDonald's next to a high rise, the contrast is pretty wild.

No, it isn't, visit https://www.dice.com and enter kotlin into the search field. There are a few hundred total listed.

With 8 billion people on the planet and many people with Internet access these days I'm surprised there aren't like a billion people on Steam.
RockingGoodNite··on U.S. Army Chooses Google Workspace
That reminds me I'm an idiot for defending Google in this.
RockingGoodNite··on U.S. Army Chooses Google Workspace
No one really uses spreadsheets any more except as nicer CSV outputs.
RockingGoodNite··on U.S. Army Chooses Google Workspace
I remember 1998 Microsoft like yesterday. Google past or present is no 1998 Microsoft in terms of badness.
RockingGoodNite··on U.S. Army Chooses Google Workspace
In 2002, Code Red mostly brought down the Internet. It was big news then. I can't imagine Microsoft could survive that happening today. Either way, making it sound like something that happened so few human years ago in either case deserves more reflection.

> Tons of functionality you get in Excel is not there.

On the rare occasion I have to put something into Excel for some business person, it's a dump from CSV.

RockingGoodNite··on We should measure well-being instead of failing to measure economic productivity
The opposite sex. Done.

People are biurnal? No, people are diurnal. People who try to be nocturnal or biurnal are fooling themselves and screwing up their lives and probably negatively affecting the lives of those around them.

RockingGoodNite··on UML: My Part in Its Downfall
>> Yes, planning ahead is good, but it is not end all, be all

Actually it is when faced with being exposed to a vacuum at −455 °F.

RockingGoodNite··on UML: My Part in Its Downfall
I agree and nothing about waterfall denied making prototypes, ever. We all know modern agile is nothing more than mini-waterfalls anyway.
RockingGoodNite··on UML: My Part in Its Downfall
I never liked UML but I agree time-sequence diagrams can be very helpful.
RockingGoodNite··on UML: My Part in Its Downfall
There is something to say for design and long term (old fashioned) waterfall. Imagine starting building a rocket today to deliver a satellite to a specific location in space tomorrow. The just ship it paradigm has its place making web apps and smart phone app doo-dads, but that's about it.
RockingGoodNite··on Toyota CEO talks about why he isn’t all-in on EVs
I've driven and flown across the United States multiple times. There are far more people in my camp than yours, about 75% of the nation.
RockingGoodNite··on Toyota CEO talks about why he isn’t all-in on EVs
Edge cases? That's why they are called disasters. That's why there's disaster planning. Ever read https://www.ready.gov/ ?
RockingGoodNite··on Ask HN: In what ways is programming more difficult today than it was years ago?
Social politics. Can't say a thing today that would have been seen as funny in a diverse team 20 years ago. We're like robots in Teams chat.
RockingGoodNite··on Toyota CEO talks about why he isn’t all-in on EVs
I like the idea of an EV, always have, even thought by age now they would be the dominant vehicle. Charging hundreds of millions of cars in the US alone overnight and short ranges compared to a gas vehicle didn't factor into my thinking until recent years.

Jay Leno has mentioned several times the numerous advantages steam and electric cars had over gas over 100 years ago but they were not enough to beat the sheer convenience of gas.

I once scoffed at the idea of a hybrid (thinking of them as a stepping stone) but today I realize they make much more sense than I realized before. Think of crossing the Mojave Desert in an EV.

RockingGoodNite··on Japan WWII poison gas agents still scarring people today
This is truly incredible. The grandson of a president from the 1840's has to bear witness to ... the Tic Tok age and China's growing mind control of the world's population.
RockingGoodNite··on Paving the on-ramp to Java
var and static must die.
RockingGoodNite··on Paving the on-ramp to Java
static should be removed from Java. static is bad, not always but because it can be misused and because it makes debugging more difficult and most important of all, it makes testing impossible and PowerMock is to be avoided at all costs.
RockingGoodNite··on Open Source PC That Fits in Your Pocket
>> Would you want a command line interface on your Smart TV using only a remote?

Yes. We've been doing it for years since we cut the cord from cable TV. We switched to a plain PC (Lennovo low end laptop for $200) running Ubuntu and use an Air Remote (combination mouse/keyboard) around $15 on Amazon and watch all content in Chrome. It's great! I can get a shell and change things if I want, ssh in from my office desktop, etc.

RockingGoodNite··on Integrating with Fastmail
I was thinking every response is almost incredulously high. Also makes me wonder about the source of all the anti-self-host email posts.
