Rohansi··on Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production
Do you boycott every company with a CEO that you don't agree with politically? Musk is much more open about it than others but you'll find that most of them are fine with screwing over everyone for their own (personal+company) benefit. For example, pretty much every major ICE automaker lobbies against EVs, including ones that sell EVs. Most people would be better off with an EV. They don't need to be expensive (see BYD) and the charging situation would improve with higher adoption rates.
Rohansi··on Qualcomm Cloud AI 100 Ultra – 150W AI Accelerator Card with 128GB at 548GB/s
Small devices are the best use case for on package memory, yes. But at the same time I don't know of any that go beyond a 128-bit bus. Most are 64-bit.
Rohansi··on Discord is ditching Electron and its new app uses less RAM
Outside of macOS/iOS (maybe Android too?) there isn't really any guaranteed consistency between native apps on the platform because there are multiple options for native UI toolkits which render differently. Plus, designers would rather have a consistent (unique/recognizable) look across platforms.
Rohansi··on Discord is ditching Electron and its new app uses less RAM
Too expensive for Discord?
Rohansi··on Qualcomm Cloud AI 100 Ultra – 150W AI Accelerator Card with 128GB at 548GB/s
> tri-channel on-package (!) memory good for 228 GB/s

Why is on-package memory impressive/better in this case? It's one channel more than your typical consumer x86 system (192-bit bus vs 128-bit) which is something but you could technically have quad channel with two LPCAMM2 sockets?

Rohansi··on Safari introduces Adaptive Dark Mode in 27.3
> But this involves setting a lot of styles and must be done case-by-case rather than using an auto styler.

If the website is using modern CSS then the colors would be set via CSS variables instead of being set inline in lots of places.

> I also detest the conflation of OS dark preference, browser chrome theme preference, and website rendering preference. It should be obvious to anyone that these are three different concepts where people can have different preferences for each.

Most people definitely prefer consistency so I don't think it is unreasonable to default to following the system preference.

Rohansi··on Safari introduces Adaptive Dark Mode in 27.3
But you can have both? Automatically switching between light and dark mode based on system preferences is handled by CSS, which you can override with your own styling.
Rohansi··on Safari introduces Adaptive Dark Mode in 27.3
Custom painting isn't the only thing that broke it. You can customize the style (colors) of the native widgets to get a desired look but IIRC you could choose from system colors (follows the theme/mode automatically) or exact colors. Some applications used a mix of them which made the UI look awful if you switched away from whatever the default theme was.
Rohansi··on Safari introduces Adaptive Dark Mode in 27.3
Per website...? Why would anyone want that instead of just using the system-wide preference? Many sites/apps have an option of system/light/dark.
Rohansi··on Toit v2.0.0
Those requirements are at odds with each other though. If you want to get the most out of MCU hardware you typically use C/C++/Rust, either as a whole or via a custom build of MicroPython/NodeMCU/Espruino. MicroPython has some interesting options for high performance code that you (optionally) run on your PC before deployment.

Besides that, there are other languages that have similar characteristics. Wren (https://wren.io/) is pretty nice but doesn't have type annotations or explicitly target embedded.

Rohansi··on Toit v2.0.0
You get almost all of that with the more common language options too (MicroPython, NodeMCU/Lua, Espruino/JS). What makes this custom language better?
Rohansi··on Backdoor in Claude Code for VS Code extension on the Cursor Marketplace
A big danger warning before installing extensions is a great way to kill your FOSS extension crowd off. Verifying ownership of a domain doesn't even guarantee that anything about the extension is trustworthy. People get phished all the time and skip through warnings.

Scanning is a curious one. It's not always obvious because developer tools have legitimate reasons to do a lot of these things. LLMs are better at understanding what it's actually doing now though so that might have worked. But who knows, people have snuck in backdoors into many things before.

Rohansi··on Backdoor in Claude Code for VS Code extension on the Cursor Marketplace
Then you would have the same problem. Anthropic has no presence on the Cursor Marketplace, so what is stopping someone from claiming the name and just not associating a domain name?
Rohansi··on Backdoor in Claude Code for VS Code extension on the Cursor Marketplace
And force everyone who wants to publish an extension to buy and manage a domain name? What if it expires? You're just replacing one set of problems with another.
Rohansi··on Backdoor in Claude Code for VS Code extension on the Cursor Marketplace
I don't think even VSCode does this. Probably not even any package managers I know of? Code signing, yes, but not for organization verification? It's pretty much like a username - anyone can claim it if it is unclaimed?

edit: VSCode has a verified marker for publishers but I don't know how that works or if Cursor does the same.

Rohansi··on Backdoor in Claude Code for VS Code extension on the Cursor Marketplace
Isn't the Cursor Marketplace separate from VSCode's? Maybe it's as simple as someone impersonating Anthropic because they never registered there? Code signing alone wouldn't help in cases like that.
Rohansi··on US Government is hiding a secret court ruling about how it spies on Americans
Your message suggests there is both a possibility that he is a US citizen and also claims that he is not a US citizen.

If it was 100% clear that he is not a US citizen then I don't think they would have let him back into the country. I'm curious to see how they are going to prove that he was not born in the US, assuming his US birth certificate is valid. Ideally the Mexican birth certificate shouldn't take precedence over the US one.

Rohansi··on Raspberry Pi Zero 3W and Pi 4 Model A spotted in device trees
Over time the Raspberry Pi use case shifted more and more away from GPIO. They all still have it but probably most of them are used as a Linux computer without ever touching the GPIO now. The people who do use GPIO on a Raspberry Pi are often better off using an ESP32 because they have better control of GPIO, consume far less power, and are actually cheap.

Personally I use ESP32s for GPIO to control things around the house and have one Raspberry Pi acting as a hub.

Rohansi··on US Government is hiding a secret court ruling about how it spies on Americans
From what I've seen it looks like he has a birth certificate in both countries? If he does and his US birth certificate says he was born in the US then he is a US citizen.
Rohansi··on Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11
A lot of it boils down to native widget look and feel. It's pretty silly in reality because there are multiple possible options for what is native on Windows (Win32/WinForms, WPF, UWP, WinUI, ...) and Linux (Qt, GTK, ...), so native apps will still be inconsistent. It's probably just an Apple thing really, because every other platform is already a big mix of different UI styles.
Rohansi··on US Government is hiding a secret court ruling about how it spies on Americans
> That guy is a Mexican national, not an American

If they actually have a valid US birth certificate then how can you say that?

Rohansi··on New iMac with M6
> You can buy a very nice 32" monitor and better input devices for less than that.

But they aren't Apple.

Rohansi··on Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11
Linux isn't the source of the incompatibility. The kernel itself is very strict about not breaking userspace. Your userspace is breaking compatibility on its own, containers fix it by shipping the userspace components within the container, which only works because the kernel maintained compatibility. If the kernel broke compatibility you would need to use a VM so you can run a different kernel version.
Rohansi··on Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11
The way you worded this message could mean either a) people should focus on a single platform using native frameworks, or b) people should use a cross-platform framework instead of spreading themselves too thin. Maybe even both?
Rohansi··on Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11
You still need to test all of those separate GUIs though so it's still costing more.

You also generally don't want them to actually be in sync because there are actual UX differences between platforms that you need to align with to really be native. If you don't follow that then what's the point?

Rohansi··on Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11
Not everyone has the resources to build five or six different UIs.
Rohansi··on We should be more ambitious with the software we build
Many native UI toolkits also suffer from some the issues you shared. Depending on what you compare with you'll find fewer layout options, limited or no text selection, poor style and animation support, etc. People say browsers are inefficient but it's actually impressive how well browsers manage to run all of the badly optimized websites out there.
Rohansi··on We should be more ambitious with the software we build
SVG animation in a browser works completely differently than a game engine handles animation. SVG is based on the DOM and animating it requires mutating the DOM. Lots of string operations because everything is a string attribute. All of that has a ton of unnecessary overhead.

You actually would have been better off replacing your SVG animation with a game loop! Assuming you're using Lottie you can easily swap it to render into a `<canvas>` which doesn't have any of that overhead and uses `requestAnimationFrame` which automatically gets throttled in inactive tabs.

By inline arrays do you mean within a struct field? You can do that with the `fixed` modifier.
Rohansi··on Ask HN: Optimize a low-end Windows 10 laptop?
Linux Mint or Ubuntu. Mint is a bit lighter but Ubuntu might look a bit nicer. Don't bother with whatever distro is more trendy, these are great and very stable.
