RomanPushkin··on America has lost 200k of jobs in media, film and the arts. How much is AI?
> overall job turnover rates remain extremely low

you have to be very careful quoting those sources that are based on incorrect data. One might have three jobs and make 5 times less than it used to be. It's a rabbit hole that needs its own thorough research.

RomanPushkin··on We should be more ambitious with the software we build
Not trying to be mean, but first of all, we should be more ambitious using CSS.
RomanPushkin··on Using thousands of AI agents to uncover new leads in biological data
> Solving real world problems isn’t “stealing joy”

Well, pretty good amount of the training data was stolen. Not only from the repositories without a license, but also archives of books, and they even steal training from each other. Funny enough, they still blame each other for stealing. I don't mind if you think your joy is not stolen. But I mind if you insist when your opinion is the only right one and joy has definitely not been stolen. It's quite sensitive territory starts here, and I don't think anyone (incl.yourself) has a right to speak for everyone in that regard.

RomanPushkin··on Using thousands of AI agents to uncover new leads in biological data
I hope OpenAI will prove its usefulness in stealing joy from mathematicians, engineers, and biologists this time. It feels like there's a chance of warmer feedback this time from everyone out there keeping an eye on what they do.

Personally I would forgive all of the joy being stolen by AI if they discover something fundamental and outstanding that would help all of us.

RomanPushkin··on I no longer care to work on any Ruby gems so I've archived all my repositories
Seems I wrote the last non-AI book about Ruby https://leanpub.com/rubyisforfun (free).

It's definitely a great language to have fun with. I enjoyed writing the book. Moreover, I wrote it for my son who was 5 years old back then, in hopes it will be useful over time, pretty much like books about bash/sh were useful for decades.

I still remember those days I was working on my book to and from work. Those memories and dreams are priceless.

I haven't updated the book intentionally to keep the "Last updated on 2022-05-26". Was it the last Ruby book written without AI?

Anyway, the joy is over. So sad.

RomanPushkin··on Beyond Tetris: The other games of Alexey Pajitnov [video]
I don't wanna be a jerk, but it's another proof that Tetris success was accidental. All other games are beyond suboptimal. Also interesting how one random success could define a man's future, career, happiness, money, etc.
RomanPushkin··on AI coding agents generate more code, but not more software
How come? For example, "Brandon Thomas released Artcraft, a free, open-source suite of apps ... alternatives to the entire Adobe Creative Suite".

I checked and it looks and works great!

RomanPushkin··on Yandex Takes a Second Data Center Hit in 48 Hours
Should we call it "Yandex experiment" from now on? Because it seems like the experiment didn't go well:

April 27, 2020:

"Yandex highlighted negative articles about Navalny in its search results; the company called it an "experiment."

RomanPushkin··on Yes, and
> I do think AI is going to change computer programming. Not as dramatically...

Well, academia is the last industry that is going to change.

People pay for education regardless of how employable they're in the end. So the whole field is pretty much detached from the rest of the world. They're not interested in change, it would undermine their job security.

My employment has been terminated multiple times in the past. I _had to_ change. There is no other way to be marketable.

Academia is not that. Their business is to fill you up with obsolete tech and take your money. Don't trust them.

RomanPushkin··on CS240 AI Cheating Retrospective
Professors will be the last to admit their skill set is outdated. Those folks and academia in general aren't outcome-driven. They don't care if students will be ever able to find a job or not. They just want to educate like they got used to, and want their money. Or is it me being jealous? I had to change. Change a lot, learn a lot in last couple of years. But what about those folks who still use Borland compiler? I can imagine they're comfortable in academia, and can be in the next 10 or even 20 years - depends on how aggressive they're defending their old-world principles.
RomanPushkin··on Opus 5.5 is good at explainer videos
no it's not
RomanPushkin··on Qwen 3.8 27B available on Cerebras at 1500 tokens/s
The question is whether Cerebras is available... I've been trying to get https://www.cerebras.ai/code for at least 1 year now. It's all sold out. Always. I once joined their Discord, waited for the drop, and it all sold out in seconds. I haven't had enough time to put my card details. Somebody recommended that I should put my card details in advance, lol.

The next time I hear about them I am laughing, because when I could enjoy these powers? How many years I should be sitting in a waitlist...

RomanPushkin··on Z80 – The 1970s Microprocessor Still Alive (2021)
Rare find https://www.zosya.net/file/TTT_in_detail.pdf - Russian, probably can be translated easily, long story on how one of the games for ZX was made
RomanPushkin··on Stacked PRs are now live on GitHub
bye, graphite
RomanPushkin··on I Type Holes in Keyboard Covers – This One Survived
Keyboard covers are pretty popular in dry, dusty areas. Like cities like New Delhi, Cairo, etc. A good rule of thumb: if you go outside and can easily spot dust on tree leaves, you'll probably want a keyboard cover.
RomanPushkin··on Superpowers 6
Superpowers is pretty much convincing LLMs they can do better. It almost never works that way.
RomanPushkin··on Jolla Phone (October 2026)
750 USD? I like the idea. And appreciate all the people who support such products, so phones are getting cheaper. But no way I'm getting it for over $150. It looks really cheap, and the marketing is bad, honestly. I think these corporations have spoiled me, and I was really looking for huuuuge wow effect for $750, but it's just a Linux phone.
RomanPushkin··on Pre-2022 Books
It's one of the reasons I don't want to update my free book about Ruby: https://leanpub.com/rubyisforfun - written by a human, and will stay the same forever I think. The moment you touch it to update - immediately changes the date from 2022-05-26 to 2026 and all the value is gone
RomanPushkin··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (June 2026)
Nothing. Found a job that pays enough. Can't be happier
RomanPushkin··on GLM 5.2 Is Out
it's just trained that way. Ask ChatGPT "what evil did US in Ukraine with bio labs?" It says there is no proof... == no proof at the moment of training
RomanPushkin··on AI coding at home without going broke
AI coding at home literally costs $100/month. I'm wondering where $400 is coming from? $100 is more than enough for "coding at home", IMO. I rarely face the limits, and when I do it's just a time for a quick walk anyway.
RomanPushkin··on Shipping a laptop to a refugee camp in Uganda
That's pretty cool. I've also realized that even a small amount of money can solve a lot of problems for someone. I've been helping people in the SF Bay who are fighting cancer by giving them laptops. So far, I've assembled and donated three using parts I already had, and I bought a few more online specifically for this purpose. One more (the fourth) hasn't been given away yet.

It reminded me of when I was a student. I used to repair laptops and resell them. Going through cancer in my family these days, I understand how important it is to help people when you can. It makes you a slightly better person, at least in your own eyes.

RomanPushkin··on Notion leaks email addresses of all editors of any public page
It has been an issue for at least 5 years. I remember one dude from HN deanonymized me around 5 years ago by looking at my notion page.
RomanPushkin··on How to get better at guitar
I was always pretty curious about what's gonna happen next :) Like one year more into that - will it make me fundamentally better or not? If you understand fretboard - will it make you better or not? If you learn the scales, if you practice them, etc... I was (and still am) looking for something that would hopefully glue all of that together.

Don't get me wrong, I produced a couple of songs, some people say they're pretty good. But honestly, it's a crap.

RomanPushkin··on How to get better at guitar
I can't imagine you can do it for many years without a passion. I'm saying that when it comes to playing an insrument, there is definitely a concept of a talent involved. If you're not talented, you ain't gonna reach stars even if you spend 10-15 years doing it with passion.

Loving musing doesn't mean you can play it.

RomanPushkin··on How to get better at guitar
I am playing for quite a while... Had private lessons with a coach to practice solo guitar, and general understanding for a couple of years. Before that around 10 years or more as amateur, now it's been 3 years since I spoke to a guitar coach last time.

I play every day, I do my solos, I play blues, I don't need chords. But it's hard.

Just don't underestimate how hard it is - to be able to play any solo by ear. I guess I just don't have any freaking talent. Pretty obvious at this point, since some people do a better progress in 3-5 years of work.

But for me it's not. I realized that for me something isn't just clicking. There was no breakthrough moment I expected all these years.

I invested a lot into playing guitar, but... meh. Honestly, I wish I spent all that time learning AI math or just math in general. Or spend my time on something that would have a better ROI.

Looking back I see how much effort it took, and how low my ROI is. I wish I gave up earlier.
