Rygian··on Websites Should Be Printable
Have you looked into the CSS paged media directives?.

Rygian··on Proton hosts Flock map revealing over 300k cameras, defying cease-and-desist
Either they were published with a license compatible with ODbL, or there is written permission from the rights holder to import them into OSM, i strongly doubt it.
Rygian··on Parsing EDIFACT in Python with syntax trees
In my corner of the world, all official grammar descriptions finish with a sentence like "or another interpretation by bilateral agreement" (where bilateral means between any two vendors using the same "standard").
Rygian··on The Future of CSS
If that means having an "HTML+CSS framework" that I could easily swap out for a "Typst framework" and publish my blog using Typst, then sign me up!

Meanwhile, there's Typst bundles [1], still experimental, that implement the same idea backwards: convergint a Typst project into a set of output files (which can be HTML).

Rygian··on I never authorized an integration that scans my secrets
The hash itself is irrelevant.

The question is what PII does HIBP collect on submission (eg IP address), and with whose consent, and for which purposes?

All that should be explained in excruciating detail in the ticket and in the documentation, to begin with.

Rygian··on I never authorized an integration that scans my secrets
Undoing personal information for a purpose different than the purpose for which it was collected.
Rygian··on I never authorized an integration that scans my secrets
I wouldn't be surprised if that integration is outright illegal in EU due to GDPR, thus putting HIBP in trouble for ingesting PII without any legal legitimacy.

And the first reply being "It is not an invasion of privacy" just shows incompetence on privacy topics. It is never a valid answer.

Which is really concerning, for the lead developer of a home automation system that "fights for the fundamental principle of privacy" as per their mission statement.

Rygian··on Show HN: Guitoro, a virtual guitar you strum with your keyboard
Why does it show a left-handed guitar on Player view, and a right-handed one on Audience view?
Rygian··on ASOS app users receive push notifications apparently sent by hackers
Same here, first time I see that brand.
Rygian··on Questions for believers in AI consciousness
If you train a model to say it feels those things, then you are forcing an unconventional definition of the word "feel".

If you satisfy the second part thanks to a suitable harness, then you agree it is not an emergent property of the AI itself, but rather an add-on tacked in.

Rygian··on Questions for believers in AI consciousness
Here's one "philosopher" 's test:

Can it feel hunger, thirst, pain, sexual desire, fear, tiredness?

If yes to any of the previous: does it have agency to address and satisfy those feelings?

If yes to any of the previous: is it able to willingly delay instant gratification?

If yes: conscious.

If not: instincts-based being.

Note: you will find it challenging to agree on definitions of the words "feel", "satisfy", "willingly" and probably all the rest.

Rygian··on cp: -r or -R?
At some point it starts very much looking like zfs send | pv | ssh <target> zfs receive
Rygian··on cp: -r or -R?
with a sandwiched `| pv |` for fun stats
Rygian··on Firebase SDK is crashing all iOS apps since this morning
With push notifications?
Rygian··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
> wanting to composite application together from smaller bits in a unified workspace that I the User control

This bit reminds me of TRON/BTRON, a Japanese OS where a core principle was that users interacted with documents made of fragments which were documents themselves.

"The file and the application were implementation details […] the user-visible primitive on a desktop computer shouldn't be a file or the application, but the typed document part."

Rygian··on US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution
The first ever version of the "Greenhouse gas" wikipedia page lists CO₂ as the first such gas (besides water vapor, obviously disregarded).

That page is from 2002.

Rygian··on Porsche puts wireless EV charging into production
Charging rate of 11 kW, with efficiency of about 90%, means that the charger sucks around 12.2 kW of power from the grid, of which 1.2 kW is continually lost*, and only 11 kW is effectively being stored in the battery at any point in time.

I don't understand the mention about battery capacity (80 kWh, which would translate to around 7½ hours of charging at 11 kW, if a battery could charge at a uniform rate) or where the "9 kW lost" figure comes from.

*Which is probably useful to melt snow above the device, when installed outdoors on cold climates.

Rygian··on Google AI Studio fakes data deletion. VRP auto-banned me in 60s for reporting it
It's already illegal in Europe, as long as the data falls into the PII category.
Rygian··on Roundabouts Database
European here: always stay in the outermost lane, no matter which exit you're taking. Problem solved.

The inner lanes are only for overtaking.

Rygian··on Black Holes or Black Hole Stars? Astronomers Spar over 'Little Red Dots'

Rygian··on Comparison of Malloc() Algorithms

Rygian··on Tell the speakers that you liked their talks
Is it possible for you to challenge the status quo?

For example, refuse to present anything unless at least three members of the audience agree to share their feedback in the session.

Or alternatively, include in your presentation direct questions to specific members of the audience (either pre-arranged, or spontaneous).

Rygian··on Why is privacy so hard? (2019)
Any "legally-binding, two-party transaction" between an individual and a large corporate conglomerate is a lost battle (or more precisely, a not-even-fought battle) for the vast majority of individuals.

80% of buyers of anything simply smash "Accept" (and watch through ads/spam) until their device shows the content they wanted to access. (Statistic is made up, but I think it's hard to refute.)

Do you call that "explicit consent"?

Rygian··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
> Friedman [...] advocates a deal with Iran which would essentially allow it a secure sphere of influence in the region and an alliance with Turkey to counterbalance Iran and Israel.

Seems to be in contradiction.

Rygian··on Larger Pacific striped octopus
So they (and you) really meant Colombia instead.
Rygian··on Larger Pacific striped octopus
Quite confusing how the referenced paper [1] juxtaposes Guatemala, Panama, and the (British) Columbia region of Canada.

Unless they actually meant Colombia. But peer review would certainly catch that.

Rygian··on One woman's Tesla was remotely controlled by an abusive ex-partner
You go to the settings in the car screen and remove that device from the list of authorized devices.
Rygian··on “Tweet” and the bird logo apparently enter the public domain
Decision from the judge "Issuance of the injunction precluding Bluebird's use of the Twitter-formative marks is contingent on X Corp.'s posting of a $500,000 bond."

Both X Corp. and Bluebird have asked to go to court on Nov 2027.

Rygian··on anystation: Calling any station A public board shaped like a tree. No account

You can interact with it via raw TCP, raw UDP, HTTP, email, ssh, ping payload, ping cadence (Morse-style), DNS, or even raw printer commands.
