SamBorick··on HERMES radio enables voice and data communication over vast distances
Hi, I'm an actual licensed ham radio operator.

'Encryption' in the ham space is defined as intentionally obscuring a message. Encoding data in a format is an extremely common practice. As long as the intent isn't to actually obscure your message, pretty much any digital format you can dream up is fine. The main method of email over HF, WinLink, is proprietary so IMO they don't even comply, but the FCC hasn't done anything so apparently it's fine.

Enforcement in this space looks like hams reporting bad behavior to the FCC, and if the FCC decides to enforce they send a nasty letter, escalating until the offender's license gets revoked if they don't stop.

This specific project is very cool. There's a lot of amateur radio emergency communications groups (EmComm) who use WinLink heavily, and IMO it would be better to use something open source.

All the more reason to get my sBitx set up and play around with this.

SamBorick··on Just Bury Your Trash
Yes, that is true. From the NPR article:

"The real solution is to switch to systems of reuse and refill," Ramsden said. "We are at a decision point on plastic pollution. It is time for corporations to turn off the plastic tap."

"Just Bury Your Trash" is arguing "Turn the plastic tap on more please, and don't even bother TRYING to recycle it".

SamBorick··on Just Bury Your Trash
That's great! Genuinely, I think you should keep doing that.

My point was not actually about plastic vs reusable. My point was, why is embodied energy always used in contrarian climate arguments. Why not talk about ergonomics, or the "bike waterproof-ness standard"?

I think embodied energy is being used in this article to push the author's specific views, which to fund atmospheric carbon extraction.

SamBorick··on Just Bury Your Trash
ALSO, what is the obsession with embodied energy?

Like lets think about plastic bags from an object use standpoint. Given you have a collection of stuff to carry would you prefer:

A) A reasonably sturdy bag that can be styled to your preference (like with art or whatever) that you have to remember to bring with you when you need.

B) The literal minimum possible material to be considered a bag. Even money whatever you put into it will punch straight through the bottom, or you'll need to use 2-4 nested bags anyway. And it'll be uncomfortable to hold the whole time.

I think from an object use perspective a reusable bag is more pleasant to use.

But embodied energy calculations are convenient because you can get numbers to compare. But it ignores externalities.

Like if you actually considered the embodied energy of the median tote bag vs the median plastic bag from the point that it was extracted from the ground to the point that it returns to dust, I think the story would look really different. I'll bet a sizable percentage of plastic bags don't even make it through their first use. Meanwhile I've got tote bags that I think are fully 15 years old. Plus if you consider the remediation future generations will need to do for plastic bags. meanwhile I can actually bury a cotton tote bag in the dirt to decompose and it doesn't need infrastructure to prevent poisoning the water supply.

Did the authors consider the embodied energy of the landfill itself? Shipping? Trash collection? Ongoing monitoring? The embodied energy of the future carbon capture system?

It's just so convenient to look only at the materials, equate that to kg of co2, and use that for whatever narrative makes you feel good.

SamBorick··on Just Bury Your Trash
"Instead of paying more to recycle, we could spend that money far more effectively on other environmental mitigation measures like carbon capture."

Yeah, let's stop doing the fairly well established recycling programs that have knock on benefits like reducing pollution, and instead start scaling an entirely unproven and expensive mitigation program.

These are some prominent Effect Altruism guys so I know "cause prioritization" is their whole thing. But I think this is just basic contrarianism, because you cant fundraise off the fact that the cultural shift to recycling in the first world has been pretty successful and positive.

SamBorick··on Defeating a 40-year-old copy protection dongle
I forwarded this to my dad who still works on RPG. This product is called "Software Sentinel":

> It required an input key that was unique to our dongle series & our own code that was whatever we wanted. The reply was a hash of both values.

> The last version we used was USB. They retired the parallel style long ago.

SamBorick··on Abandoned by Humans, Forsaken by Nature: The Plight of Pigeons (2024)
pigeons are domesticated rock doves. rock doves nest in small caves, so the only nest building they need to do is a few sticks to prevent eggs from rolling out of the caves.

Yes, it is. You should try it.

Awesome, thanks so much!
SamBorick··on Show HN: Moocable – find people studying the same online course/book
I've been trying to put together a study group all week!

Is it possible to add a new course to the library? I'd like to make a group for CSS for JavaScript Developers by Josh W Comeau [1] but it seems like I can only make a group for courses in the library.

SamBorick··on Scripts should be written using the project main language
I like to take this a step further and try to have all my most important tooling be written in my projects major languages. It's not a must have, but having a build system for a go project that is also go under the hood means I'm more comfortable diving into the source if needed.

I don't think it's a requirement, but it's an advantage

SamBorick··on Oh shit, my app is successful and I didn't think about accessibility
It's amazing how many people in this thread are seriously suggesting that these a11y features are not important. Do HN readers not understand that someday they will grow old, and their eyesight will fail, and they will find themselves increasing the font size on their devices?
SamBorick··on Muppet babies will never be available on streaming due to studio copyright claim

SamBorick··on Beeper vs. Apple battle intensifies: Lawmakers demand DOJ investigation
My view is that all of those messaging platforms blocking alternative clients are equally problematic.

I've arrived at this position because I'm not able to use any of those platforms because they don't provide accessibility tools that I need. Beeper does, and most matrix clients do also.

I recognize that the open source "everything should be open" view is not remotely mainstream, but the only way forward is to demand better.

SamBorick··on Thoughts on Threads and ActivityPub
The biggest strength of the fediverse is that every instance operator can make their own decisions on this matter.
SamBorick··on There's Never Been a Worse Time to Buy Instead of Rent
I think people forget you can't live inside an index fund. It's hard to value a higher predicted YoY return when you have to spend a month out of every year moving because rent went up again.
SamBorick··on Supernova in 1006
That's not accurate. Star movements are on the order of mili-arcseconds per year. So around 1 arcsecond per star in a random direction over the last thousand years. Constellations would be different, but close enough that we could recognize.

I don't understand why people in this thread think is so unreasonable that a culture saw a new star in the sky 1/4 the brightness of the moon for 3 months, and somebody bothered to carve it on a rock.

SamBorick··on Ask HN: Where to find open-source house plans?
I think it's worth noting that the inventor of the earthship plans does not himself live in an earthship. I have seen a lot of anecdotal accounts of people living in earthships developing health issues because of off-gassing from the tires. Also they are really optimized for desert environments, they don't preform as well in high humidity.
SamBorick··on Inside The Decline of Stack Exchange
Do y'all really use ChatGPT for coding questions? Every time I have tried, the answer I get is entirely wrong, and I end up going back to either first party documentation, or Stack Exchange.
SamBorick··on The force that shapes everything around us: Parking
> People needing to move non-trivial distances for periodic tasks shapes everything. Cars, and thus car parking, come about because of this need.

This is not true. Every city in the US used to have a robust public transit system. No cars or parking lots needed. You can hitch 2 horses per car space, and 10-20 bikes in the same space.

Those pre-car public transit systems were bankrupted by artificially low fares, and because a small number of cars literally got in the way: https://www.vox.com/2015/5/7/8562007/streetcar-history-demis...

SamBorick··on I don’t want a new phone, but I’m probably buying one
I'm currently running KDE Neon on a MBP 2012, and I've installed linux on a few apple devices from that era. The nvidia drivers can be a struggle, and wifi drivers have to be configured manually.

But the performance is awesome!

SamBorick··on I don’t want a new phone, but I’m probably buying one
The hardware is still working. I think it's reasonable that the software should continue to work until the hardware is physically incapable of booting. An entire industry deciding that hardware "should" only last 6 years is shameful.

(Typing this on a macbook pro 2012)

SamBorick··on Moonwalkers: Shoes that make you walk faster (pre-order)
all of the things this product wants to solved would be better served by removing cars from our cities. Like everything can be in walking distance, when they're built within walking distance in the first place.

The founder almost got killed by a car. it wasn't because he was on a scooter.

commenting is valid, it would be cool to see that in a feed reader. But ActivityPub can do that, I believe Write.as has comments.

but video ads? none for me thanks.

SamBorick··on Start a fucking blog
I don't believe it, its true.

I was on twitter for 7 years. Hundreds of followers, thousands of tweets. Maybe 6 actual replies in that time.

I've been on mastodon for 5 years now. I have people I'd genuinely call friends. A community. Regular meaningful engagement with actual humans about the stuff we make and share with each other.

Twitter isn't designed for engagement between people. its designed to make money by getting you to engage with twitter as a platform.

SamBorick··on Start a fucking blog
> you need a proof of concept that centralizes various blogs into an updating feed of subscribed blogs.

its called rss

SamBorick··on Start a fucking blog
which would you rather have, thousands of people who maybe see your tweets, or a few people who actually engage with what you care about?

numbers vs community.
