SamReidHughes··on Apple announces largest-ever $110B share buyback as iPhone sales drop 10%
Long term, buybacks aren't about supply/demand -- they increase a share's percentage ownership of the business.

They seem to mean talent density in the sense of the amount of talent per person.
SamReidHughes··on Tesla strike widens as Swedish union expands blockade
Singapore obviously had a lot of differences, particularly the PM's past close relationship with the unions, and the early stage of development making it more rational for workers to ride the common prosperity of high economic growth rates instead of squeezing more percentage points in negotiation.

But Sweden can still outlaw selective parts unloading by dockworkers, forcing an all-or-nothing strike, if it wanted to, and enforce such laws.

And I don't know why you'd call Singapore parasitic; they weren't leeching off anybody, other than the British early on.

SamReidHughes··on Tesla strike widens as Swedish union expands blockade
From his memoirs "The Singapore Story", Chapter 6, "Winning Over the Unions", on the ports:

> Recounting Britain's prodigal years of crippling dock strikes which led to the devaluation of the pound sterling in 1967, I warned, "If that happens here at our harbour I will declare this high treason. I will move against the strike leaders. Charges will be brought in court later. I will get the port going straight away. The Singapore dollar will never be devalued and I think the people of Singapore expect this of their government." I spotlighted the "selfishness of established labour." Cargo handled by the Port of Singapore Authority in 1967 increased by winning over the unions over 10 percent, but the number of workers employed did not go up because the extra work was all taken up by overtime. This was immoral at a time of high unemployment. I told the union delegates that we must rid ourselves of pernicious British-style trade union practices.

A very interesting book; of course, it's his side of the story.

Channel their inner LKY and deal with it the way he did.
SamReidHughes··on Whatever Happened to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
For computers, it's surely that common office keyboards have changed from awful squishy keys to units that are more chiclet-like, or even if not, still have a better key action for a rubber dome keyboard.
SamReidHughes··on Linear Algebra Done Right – 4th Edition
The thing is, by the time you get to this book, most students have probably taken DiffEq or multivariable calculus, and had exposure to linear algebra there. (If not in high school.)

No. Their presumed nukes are more useful as a deterrent against more capable enemies that might develop their own nukes. And they'd immediately become an absolute pariah state. That would damage them in every way.
SamReidHughes··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
So, actually, 47% of them by dollar amount, according to the report you quoted. Selectively quoted. Why do you behave this way?

Here's a question for you to think about: Why do they reverse some claims but not others?

SamReidHughes··on The U.S. housing market vs. the Canadian housing market
> Truthfully I don't think this is an issue the federal government is in a position to solve any time soon. The long and short is that our population has grown faster than our supply of housing,

Federally they can do an immigration moratorium. Immigration-driven population increase is clearly making quality of life worse for Canadians.

SamReidHughes··on Texas paid Bitcoin miner more than $31M to cut energy usage
An enterprise that "strains the grid" still has to pay for that electricity, so it's not some perverse incentive at all.
SamReidHughes··on The missing C++ smart pointer
I've seen this sort of pointer (assuming the author means it's nullable) be called "clone_ptr<T>" but it called T's clone() method. Because T might be a base class, invoking the pointee's copy constructor in C++ is not a great idea.
SamReidHughes··on In every reported mistaken arrest using facial recognition, person was Black

SamReidHughes··on White Flight from Asian Immigration: Evidence from California Public Schools
Traditionally I think it's done as rapidly and haphazardly as possible during homeroom. It's right there in the word, home-room.

What I saw is basically the embodiment of this chart. (And remember that the "Asian" number dilutes out the Chinese and Korean numbers.)

SamReidHughes··on White Flight from Asian Immigration: Evidence from California Public Schools
This is just second-hand chit-chat from Bay Area parents, mostly living in Palo Alto/Los Altos/MV/Sunnyvale/Cupertino, about their kids' lives, that I'm talking about.

> Even if it was like that daily, how do you know the Asian kids weren't still playing and enjoying time with friends?

I didn't go and measure daily -- I avoided the place because I didn't want to hang around a bunch of high schoolers -- but it's a sight, and a vibe, that would simply never happen, ever, where I grew up.

It's not like every kid in the school district was there, with nobody left to play on the sports teams.

SamReidHughes··on White Flight from Asian Immigration: Evidence from California Public Schools
I can't read minds but "racial animus" would certainly be a strange conclusion to jump to with the people I was talking to.
SamReidHughes··on White Flight from Asian Immigration: Evidence from California Public Schools
Yes, kids spending their after school time doing homework and maxing test scores instead of having a childhood is disturbing.
SamReidHughes··on White Flight from Asian Immigration: Evidence from California Public Schools
This description is very consistent with some comments from parents that I encountered in the peninsula, when I lived there a decade ago. Avoiding heavily east Asian areas would be a factor I'd expect them to make in deciding on school district. Some cafes around Santa Clara were shockingly filled to the brim with Chinese or Korean high schoolers doing schoolwork -- it was an absolutely disturbing sight. I wouldn't call it fear of competition so much as a desire to have kids grow up in a good culture.
SamReidHughes··on Were small-brained early humans intelligent? Row erupts over scientists’ claim
The comparisons, being intra-race, are between people of the same race.

How does that mean there's nothing to compare?

SamReidHughes··on Were small-brained early humans intelligent? Row erupts over scientists’ claim
Nope, you're just making stuff up with no factual basis behind it.
SamReidHughes··on Were small-brained early humans intelligent? Row erupts over scientists’ claim
Wow, an n=35 study didn't have the power to find a signal while the ones with thousands of people do.

That must mean we have vestigial neurons.
