SchemaLoad··on Leak Exposes 41,000 Homeland Security Workers–Including Undercover ICE Agents
There's going to be massive trials over the next few years. So many people are going to have accountability catch back up to them. Maybe not the ultra rich but all these ICE goons shooting people on the street will be held accountable.
SchemaLoad··on The tragedy of losing your Wikipedia page
The deleted articles aren't actually removed from the storage, they just get delisted. Articles get removed because there isn't enough reputable sources to create an article.

Wikipedia would rather you create a blog post or any other method of getting information on the internet than to host unverifiable information under their trusted brand name.

SchemaLoad··on Formlabs Studio 1 $699 Resin Printer
The slight increase in fine detail is just not worth the toxicity imo. Put a 0.2mm nozzle on your FDM printer and you'll get good enough quality. Leave resin to businesses that can set up a proper warehouse with fume extraction and PPE.

You can even prototype your designs at home with FDM and send the final file to a company to do the resin prints.

SchemaLoad··on Tailscale SSH: Investigation and remediation update
Tailscale is best used as an additional layer of security rather than your only layer. I host everything behind tailscale as if it was the public internet, with proper authentication, https, etc.

So a failure in tailscale is not an issue on it's own because you'd then also have to find an exploit in what I'm actually hosting as well. Both of those things happening at the same time is much less likely.

SchemaLoad··on Someone behind the software
The problem is it's now very easy to copy this product work. You can point an LLM at an existing product and say "Look at how this works and build a new version in Rust".
SchemaLoad··on Show HN: WhatsApp MCP running free on Cloudflare
I never know that the people preparing my food at the restaurant are doing with it either but if I see someone doing something wrong I'm going to call it out. We should all make an effort to maintain some level of ethics even if we don't have total control over the environment.

Feeding someone else's personal data in to an AI company is unethical even if there is no way as an individual to prevent someone doing that.

SchemaLoad··on Show HN: WhatsApp MCP running free on Cloudflare
There's a difference between small scale screenshotting certain conversations, and wholesale vacuuming up everything in to the AI machine.
SchemaLoad··on macOS 15.8.2 Breaks OpenGL
They used to make these beta versions private so only ios/macos developers could test on them to report bugs to get them fixed before public release. They since opened it up to anyone who wants to install it which generates a lot of outrage from the peanut gallery when the beta has bugs.
SchemaLoad··on Show HN: WhatsApp MCP running free on Cloudflare
What bothers me about these projects is you are exposing the other side of your conversations to being uploaded to a 3rd party AI company who will ingest it in to their training data. You personally might not care about this privacy intrusion but the people you are messaging never consented to this.
SchemaLoad··on One parser, two bugs, many routers: Exploiting Broadcom WiFi across eCos, Linux
Broadcom just makes the chip right? So customers in this sense would be the router OEMs like netgear who may not have distributed the new update to end devices.
SchemaLoad··on "I'm on a war footing": Terry Tao and the crisis in math
We still have no general self driving cars. What we have is a bunch of geofenced tests. While we are closer than ever, we are still seemingly a long way away from truck drivers being obsolete was foretold over 10 years ago now.
SchemaLoad··on How Amazon pushes up prices all across the Internet
I think Amazon might have induced this problem somewhat. Most retail stores have just stopped stocking niche items because people just buy them from amazon and it frees up a lot of floorspace they could use to stock high sales volume items instead.
SchemaLoad··on AnyPS5: Port PS5 binaries to PC without emulation (87% system libraries mapped)
I wonder if there is some hybrid where the graphics rendering and input processing happens on device but the brains of the game live on the server.
SchemaLoad··on Vibecoding Photoshop: Time and pressure
I think the second order effect is that games and software become cloud only where you just get a video stream of the software so decomps can't rip it apart and rewrite in rust. Or that copyright law will make 1:1 replicas of software illegal even if the code has been AI transformed.
SchemaLoad··on Penguin Mail – open-source Rust email client for Linux with AI
Sandboxing should be handled externally by something like Flatpak
SchemaLoad··on ChatGPT is adding real cartoonists' signatures to fake New Yorker cartoons
Artists should be able to personally sue OpenAI for libel every time they forge an artists signature.
SchemaLoad··on Run Qwen 3.8 Flash Next (125B) on consumer hardware (RTX 4090) at 100T/s
I'm hopeful that this security situation is just short term turbulence and we come out the other end with companies taking security seriously, updating things on time, and writing code in more secure languages and frameworks.
SchemaLoad··on Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel
Computers are becoming architecturally more secure alongside just patching bugs. We have seen the move to using VMs with a minimal hypervisor, using separate security chips to hold sensitive info like encryption keys, Memory Tagging to detect and prevent memory exploits.

On the iphone for example even if you find a crippling bug in iOS which gives you full root access, there is still no way to get the device encryption key or face ID info because the secure enclave simply has no electrical connection that can pass that key to the OS.

SchemaLoad··on Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel
That's why we designed better languages that can block the compilation if memory hasn't been handled properly.
SchemaLoad··on Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel
Even before AI we have known that no one is smart enough to write bug free C. And with every bug being a launch platform for a full exploit it's become a big deal.
SchemaLoad··on Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel
If they were bugs of consequence you could expect each one to get it's own domain with a scary name and a logo.
SchemaLoad··on Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel
Something to keep in mind is the Linux project registered as an authority to create their own CVE numbers in 2024. Previously the majority of bugs would just be fixed without note unless there was a demonstration that it could be exploited.

Now they just give almost every bug a CVE number.

SchemaLoad··on Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel
Long term we will end up with software with no low hanging fruit exploits left. But right now we are in a period where low hanging fruit is everywhere and it's easier to exploit systems than ever before.
SchemaLoad··on Dear Software Makers
The US is not the only country here. Australia has made a good first step banning social media for teenagers and now allowing users to turn off feed algorithms. The EU is drafting new laws which ban addiction mechanics in general. So change is happening, but I think we need to go further and faster on this.
SchemaLoad··on Dear Software Makers
The market also demands meth and all kinds of things that are bad for people. It's time to seriously treat social media like the drug it is and ban all addiction mechanics.

Algorithmic recommendation engines, infinite scrolling, notifications for suggested posts, daily rewards, all of it needs to be banned.

SchemaLoad··on Cities Are Forced to Funnel License Plate Data to a Federal Surveillance Program
Trying to trick licence plate reader cameras is not realistic. A widespread network of cameras can easily detect anomalies like a plate that doesn't match the car type, or the same plate existing in two places. It might make you feel good to think there is some anarchist solution out of this, but it isn't going to work.

The tech is incredibly powerful and there isn't really anything you can do as an individual to avoid it. You better hope the people who run it have improving society in their best interests.

SchemaLoad··on Cities Are Forced to Funnel License Plate Data to a Federal Surveillance Program
None of this holds a candle to having a functional government that works for the benefit of the public.
SchemaLoad··on Dear Software Makers
A/B testing isn't about creativity, it's retention maxxing. It's what drives youtube face in every thumbnail, loud titles that don't say much, etc. This feature will optimise the actual content itself to be the most attention holding, overstimulating slop possible to synthisise.
SchemaLoad··on Dear Software Makers
We have just gone too far with engagement maximising. A/B testing titles and thumbnails was probably too far but we just keep going. At some point society needs to say stop, tech is addictive enough. We maximised way beyond what was reasonable and we need to wind it back.

Give Google, Meta and the rest an award showing they beat human psychology and now we can encorage people to put the phone down and go outside again.

SchemaLoad··on Dots: Always-on agents
I feel like all of these proposed use cases are kind of useless. Or only useful for a short time. Sure Muse might be able to scrape apartment listings, but apartment listing websites already have a search function. They could just integrate LLMs directly to do the same thing but as a first party feature.
