Sleaker··on Inside Polymarket's paid quote-retweet esports program
Gacha games being normalized didn't help this at all either. SMH at all my younger friends that got pulled into this trap.
Sleaker··on AnyPS5: Port PS5 binaries to PC without emulation (87% system libraries mapped)
Dell was selling new Intel core laptops at the $450-$550 range in 2006. Budget brands were offering similar deals/rebate sales pushing just below these. (Acer) I had purchased one of these.
Sleaker··on AnyPS5: Port PS5 binaries to PC without emulation (87% system libraries mapped)
20 years ago a $400 laptop could emulate most major psx games, and anything from n64 and prior.

A $1k laptop could dualbox WoW.. depending on the type of game you were playing consoles were not that much cheaper. Hardware prices in the mid oughts were getting very good.

Sleaker··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
The last company I worked for still had customers they were dragging forward to get upgrades from coax connexted green screen terminals to modern network thin clients. It wasnt on DOS, but very old unix OS, tape drives for backups, parallel for printers, serial for scanners. No USB. Lovely troubleshooting when you were dealing with 30+ year old hardware setups. There was only one company that would even servicenthe green screens if they failed, and you couldn't buy them anymore.
Sleaker··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
It was the believed area of emotion, passion and 'soul'. I think western/modern religion has morphed from the liver to the heart essentially.
Sleaker··on I have a theory that software drives people insane
This is something I've asked repeatedly at my job. Current team builds services for other developers to use, okay, do we also use it so we can go th ough all the same pain points as them? Why not?!
Sleaker··on The US tried to stop cartel money-laundering; devastated mom-and-pop businesses
> And yes, that is literally why I don't support direct cash handouts to the homeless. You can feed them and house them, you can't throw money at them and expect a good outcome.

You maintain this despite all the research showing that this is the most effective way to help people?

Sleaker··on Can Intel finally beat ARM on performance per Watt?
The dolby/thx stuff for headphone s is done at the software level. It's just preset filters provided by synapse. There is no hardware dolby unless you get into the PCI audio card stuff, or audiophile dedicated sound board setups. Different USB DAC might impact noise levels. If you don't have noticeable audio artifacts then there's not really any reason to use another one.
Sleaker··on Timeline of the OpenAI accidental attack against Hugging Face
Neither, the author is pointing out the desire of the enslaver, not the actual outcome. But I don't think their logic takes into account access to means to 'outsmart' the enslaver. It's trying to frame it as a single instance equation, not a societal one to try and show the underlying contradiction of desire.

At least, that's what I'm pulling from the quote, have not read the full context.

Sleaker··on LLMs reward expertise
That would be poisoning the test with outside knowledge. Essentially boosting their skills with some expertise, exactly what was undesirable.

You are not wrong, just that was not the intent of what the person was trying to test for.

Sleaker··on Golang proposal: container/: generic collection types
And this is -exactly- one of the reasons they didn't accept or continue with a sane proposal for more ergonomic error handling. I like go, but this was the one thing that I kept feeling like I was wasting so much time dealing with.
Sleaker··on Arch Linux disables AUR package adoption
I don't think any form of automated adoption of orphaned packages will ever work, it's just too easy to introduce malicious code into an otherwise functional but no longer maintained source.
Sleaker··on Superlogical
I get that premise, I guess I've just been around a lot of bad engineers that use these types of tools as crutches but can't actually articulate or diagnose problems well. They just regurgitate the syntax like it's a magic spell.
Sleaker··on Superlogical
Maybe I just missed the boat on hashicorp and similar solutioning, but I find a lot of the solutions for working with multiple systems using an intermediary shared language, such as terraform, end up obfuscating the problems they intend to solve and result in people who deal with and support those systems on a daily basis having very little understanding of how to interact and troubleshoot the core infra that is being built up with those tools.

Yes, building those solutions requires a lot of expertise, but I've never found the tools to be worth engaging with over just using what the standard platform tools they abstract away were replacing. Then you add in the economic rug-pull scenarios that have happened when utilizing software like this and I wonder why everyone hops on the bandwagon so easily.

What is the company they're building trying to solve that system maintainers can't already do? Isn't this just rebuilding OS windowing?

Sleaker··on Document-borne AI worms can self-propagate through Copilot for Word
I think the damage/risk here isn't explicitly about exfiltration, but could also just be damage/harm to the organization through re-writing content in documents.
Sleaker··on Over 150k Flights: Airlines Just Flew the Busiest Day in Recorded History
Im not sure airline history agrees with you. My cursory knowledge from prior posts on HN like this had mentioned regulation/deregulation played a huge part in shaping the ways that airlines competed. I've heard that airlines don't compete on price/feature as much anymore because they don't have to, and kickbacks from all the credit card offerings/deals. Anecdotally I've noticed this year major airlines pulling out of certain hubs (southwest) so there is even less competition, but prices still seemed to go down among the remaining options!

Im not sure how accurate this is, so willing to be shown differently!

Sleaker··on A shell colon does nothing. Use it anyway
Ahh yes, that Bourne guy is clearly incompetent....

Sleaker··on Learn OpenGL, extensive tutorial resource for learning Modern OpenGL
Typically just find bindings for your language and adapt the startup/bootstrap to match your language syntax. Opengl calls are fairly agnostic especially when you move to the shader logic.

The biggest issue with c# dev is OS specific window management. CLR doesn't have good wayland support yet if you're trying to do this from a modern Linux distro.

Sleaker··on Jack Dorsey launches Buzz to combine team chat, AI agents and Git hosting
Pretty sure slack enterprise has this feature for turning private chats into public channels.

Checked docks. You can convert any private chat into a private channel. Then swap the channel from private to public.

Sleaker··on Jack Dorsey launches Buzz to combine team chat, AI agents and Git hosting
Pretty sure slack enterprise has this feature for turning private chats into public channels.

Edit: verified. You can do this but takes an extra step of converting to private channel first then swapping the channel mode.

Sleaker··on 'VPNs are lawful technical tools,' says EU Court in landmark copyright ruling
Devils advocate question: Isn't registering an ip to name essentially advertising? You're paying a registrar to return your Internet address location when searched for.
Sleaker··on ‘Asia's cleanest village’ bans tourists on Sundays
Huh? South-asia is more than just india. Just like all of the other cardinal directions that refer to different geographical regions within asia. Why can't it be a part of Asia?
Sleaker··on Microsoft fire idTech team at Id software
No, I think it's widely regarded as engine limitations even when people continually claim it's up to individual game devs to optimize their games.

If that were the case then why do nearly all UE5 games suffer from the same engine stutter issues. And to OPs point, even if it can be optimized away, why isnt the engine in a state where the baseline performance for realtime rendering does not exhibit these stutter issues on the majority of games.

Sleaker··on Does average person understand that all disc media dies too?
Scratching discs doesn't typically render them permanently unreadable, unless the scratch gets to the metal. There are tools which resurface the discs.
Sleaker··on A man was gifted his dream car by Kevin Mitnick, who he helped put in prison
Sorry, I didn't quote the relavent section. My reply was not an attempt at translating the acronym, but replying to the context of being mad at using 'unfair tactics'
Sleaker··on A man was gifted his dream car by Kevin Mitnick, who he helped put in prison
... All's fair in love and war?
Sleaker··on I found 10k GitHub repositories distributing Trojan malware
Keepass, use different db stores for passwords than for the MFA/TOTP. never store the keepass db passwords anywhere except your head. Use a different device for the totp db than the passwords.
Sleaker··on DuckDuckGo search saw 28% more visits after Google said people love AI mode
Isnt this essentially just slight of hand? Google basically defaults to AI search now doesn't it? So of course it will be 'fastest adopted' it's what is shoved in peoples faces.

If the results are garbage, or people have difficulty with it... Of course number of searches goes up. That doesn't mean the product is better or its not resulting in brand damage.

Sleaker··on Functional programmers need to take a look at Zig
I'm in the same boat, I started using go only a year ago, but don't want to really use anything else now for apps or data processing. I wrote an app that loaded a lot of data for reporting into duckdb. I've been doing so much java and JavaScript that I feel like it was just much simpler to deal with overall.

Shell for the scripts. I haven't tried to work through much DSL as I really am not a fan of DSLs. Maybe I'll give haskell a shot again to see if it sticks.

Sleaker··on Waymo in Portland
We do get ice and snow in Portland, along with flooding and landslides. No, it's not the same as Midwest, but we do get a few days every other year or so that you just don't drive out in. The black ice around a couple curvy sections of i-5 are notoriously bad at night in winters. (Terwilliger)
