SoftTalker··on Microsoft fixes a Windows 11 annoyance as PC revenue declines
Win2KPro was the peak. Windows 7 wasn't terrible, and you could select the Windows 2000 UI. It's been downhill since then.
SoftTalker··on How I use AI (Oct 2026)
Art is by definition a human expression. A machine cannot produce art.
SoftTalker··on How I use AI (Oct 2026)
The problem with Muse and similar "run your life" agents is that booking a dinner reservation or signing up the kids for soccer isn't anything that I need to automate. They need to find better examples of real problems for their marketing.
SoftTalker··on macOS 27 does not support CoreStorage volumes
> I remember when Macs used to ship with an encyclopedia preloaded.

That came from NeXT IIRC.

SoftTalker··on Postman silently auto-installs AI plugins and attempts to share all API data
curl and jq is all I've ever needed for working with http APIs and JSON responses.
SoftTalker··on Postgres 19 is late because so many more bugs are being found now
But they do have a cost, and somewhere a human is still making decisions about spending that money on old bugs vs. new features.
SoftTalker··on Why are Soviet math textbooks so hardcore in comparison to US textbooks? (2017)
The same could be said of a compiled OO language though couldn't it?

> The people driving science forward in the West are educated some other way than strictly according to a "Common Core"

And they always have been, in addition to just being more intelligent, curious, and motivated than average.

SoftTalker··on Never Complain, Never Explain
> a life where things actually work out close to how you want them

This is almost nobody, by the way. It's another one of the illusions that has gotten worse with social media.

SoftTalker··on Supermarket freezers across Europe hit by second suspected cyber-attack
Likely none, very few reactors have been built since the internet was widely available, and the designs are even older than that.
SoftTalker··on Postgres 19 is late because so many more bugs are being found now
And if developers were working on the old features instead of adding new ones, perhaps they would have found and corrected those old bugs. Then you could say that the code was "mature." But improving old code is not exciting, and it doesn't get attention.
SoftTalker··on Keeping Up Appearances – The women taking over the funeral industry
It's not required. Nor is a casket.

You can be buried in a cardboard box. But the funeral director will be sure to remind your survivors that it's not waterproof.

SoftTalker··on Postgres 19 is late because so many more bugs are being found now
Postgres is old but a lot of its features are new. You can't really say it's mature software, as much as it has changed over its lifetime.

Truly mature software doesn't get used, because people see low activity on github and assume it's "dead" or see no new features in years and assume that it's stagnating.

SoftTalker··on AI Can Write More of the Code. We Still Have to Engineer the System
But infrastructure is actually made out of concrete, which can be poured almost like water into any mold you can fashion to hold it, and it then hardens into something stone-like.
SoftTalker··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
Exactly, streaming video is so compressed that 4k will just let you see all the compression artifacts more clearly.
SoftTalker··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
"Hey Claude...."

Well, why not?

SoftTalker··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
1080 (even 720 really) is absolutely fine at normal viewing distances for most streaming content.

If you're a videophile you might care. Most people would not notice.

SoftTalker··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
Comcast runs a separate "Xfinity WiFi" on all their routers, any Comcast user can connect to it with their credentials. Would they strike a deal with TV manufacturers to let them use it? It would not surprise me.
SoftTalker··on Parchment Paper History: How We Got Paper Perfect for Baking (2019)
Ah well, TIL....
SoftTalker··on Police chief unplugs cameras after Flock ignores contract cancellation
That's a letter you get as a final notice after previous non-response.

Companies can move mountains yes, but a routine request to cancel a service probably isn't seen as requiring that. Especially since the service contract undoubtedly defines the terms upon which either side can cancel.

SoftTalker··on Parchment Paper History: How We Got Paper Perfect for Baking (2019)
Yes butcher paper is for wrapping raw meat and being resistant to leaking fluids from raw meat. You can freeze with it but can't cook with it.
SoftTalker··on Nurses Sound Alarm as 'Uber for Nursing' Apps Push to Deregulate Healthcare
I'd be surprised if they all didn't. They certainly have that information.
SoftTalker··on US Jobs Pickup May Keep Fed on Track to Hike Rates Again
Exactly, with houses or bonds, prices and rates are inversely correlated.

A big part of why home prices are too high is that money has been too cheap. Most home buyers shop on the basis of a monthly payment. Same with cars.

SoftTalker··on Frontier Airlines Likely Breached
The same engineers who built the vulnerable systems?
SoftTalker··on Nurses Sound Alarm as 'Uber for Nursing' Apps Push to Deregulate Healthcare
Could not the IRS fix this in one swoop by declaring that "gig workers" are employees?
SoftTalker··on Nurses Sound Alarm as 'Uber for Nursing' Apps Push to Deregulate Healthcare
If you set yourself up as an LLC for your uber driving, can you take the standard mileage rate as an expense?
SoftTalker··on Police chief unplugs cameras after Flock ignores contract cancellation
The IRS generally gives you 30 days to respond to a letter. At least in my experience.
SoftTalker··on Lenovo's 'encrypted' fingerprint USB is just an unencrypted SD card in a case
Explain to them that all the commercial products are using the open source code under the covers anyway.
SoftTalker··on Police chief unplugs cameras after Flock ignores contract cancellation
Too bad the congressmen he blackmailed didn't know he was gay. At the time, that would have been powerful information.
SoftTalker··on Police chief unplugs cameras after Flock ignores contract cancellation
One week to respond to a letter delivered by US postal mail isn't really much time. Not that I support Flock or the concept of Flock-style public cameras, but I don't think you can judge them to be "not responding" that quickly.
