StuffedParrot··on Remote iPhone exploitation part 2: a remote ASLR bypass
Ethically, comparing to the CIA is about lowest bar possible.
StuffedParrot··on Why are some things darker when wet?
No, physics is such that semantics are important. What’s the observable difference between absorption/emission and reflection? If the latter doesn’t happen at all the distinction is meaningless.
StuffedParrot··on The MTA is going after an Etsy artist over a New York subway map it didn’t make
I thought the poster was implying that the USPS was enforcing ownership even though they didn’t create or provide the content, so making your own mailbox wouldn’t help at all.
StuffedParrot··on Abandoned stores, empty homes: why San Francisco's boom looks like a crisis
Yes that’s exactly the practice that I am pointing out you can replace.
StuffedParrot··on Abandoned stores, empty homes: why San Francisco's boom looks like a crisis
You’d have to ask them.
StuffedParrot··on Abandoned stores, empty homes: why San Francisco's boom looks like a crisis
Not if the society makes an effort to keep the pizza place.
StuffedParrot··on US emissions fell 2.1% in 2019
> Natural gas is roughly half as bad as coal

Not if you enter a feedback cycle of greenhouse gas emissions. That is DEFINITELY the enemy of good.

StuffedParrot··on Earth-sized exoplanet ‘habitable zone’
I’m open to it, but I suspect it would be difficult to figure out all the things we’d miss even on a biological level. You don’t think people would read about planets and realize what they’re missing? I think they would curse their ancestors for ever leaving. This feeling of leaving some paradise and forgetting what we’ve even lost is a core theme of genesis, it’s as human as anything in civilization, and it’s only going to get stronger if we explicitly abandon where we came from (I mean this metaphorically, I imagine we’d be happy on earthlike planets, even if we do miss earth’s sun or whatever at first).
StuffedParrot··on Earth-sized exoplanet ‘habitable zone’
> It would be so much easier just to create the ideal environment in a large, rotating cylinder instead of having adjust a planet's environment to our needs.

Yea but people want to go outside.

StuffedParrot··on Disinformation for hire: how a new breed of PR firms is selling lies online
I am not entirely convinced myself (I doubt there was a conspiracy so much as shared incentives) but the documentary is quite compelling, I recommend it.
StuffedParrot··on US emissions fell 2.1% in 2019
...assuming we have any skill at maintaining infrastructure, and looking around this country we really don’t. Look at the oil pipeline leaks just in the last year.
StuffedParrot··on Disinformation for hire: how a new breed of PR firms is selling lies online
> That's extraordinary nonsense.

What are you basing this on?

StuffedParrot··on Disinformation for hire: how a new breed of PR firms is selling lies online
> Was Buzzfeed trying to manipulate people or just get clicks?

Publishing is an act of manipulation, including caring about what's happening around them (which is typically considered a good thing).

StuffedParrot··on Disinformation for hire: how a new breed of PR firms is selling lies online
> It's a semi-automated system for creating clickbait to manipulate public opinion.

What differentiates this from any other media outlet?

StuffedParrot··on The first chosen-prefix collision for SHA-1
> And the linked article showed you that, in practice, "a shambles" is perfectly correct English.

I'd think "in practice" would mean evidence of contemporary usage.

StuffedParrot··on The first chosen-prefix collision for SHA-1
...for traditional use, maybe, but any editor worth their salt will stop you from doing so. At least in America. Many words have changed their meaning and use over the last 500 years.
StuffedParrot··on New Cambridge Analytica Leaks
> Facebook claims this violates their TOS. Based on that, the data can be called stolen.

They can call it that sure, but if they didn’t restrict access it’s hard to take this as anything but Facebook covering the entire point of their api—to get user data. Hell, if this is theft I should add “master burglar” to my resume—scraping in spite of being an obvious TOS violation is common in the industry. It’s certainly not a crime.

StuffedParrot··on Top Paying Tech Companies by SWE Level
What places pay less for benefits? No relocation, working sub 40 hours a week, greatly increase time off (none of this “unlimited vacation but really it’s just up to your manager” bullshit)?
StuffedParrot··on Bloody Harvest–How Everyone Ignored the Crime of the Century
You don’t argue with propaganda. Completely missing from this article are all the reasons we can’t say shit about china: our own human rights record is terrible and everyone knows it.
StuffedParrot··on Bloody Harvest–How Everyone Ignored the Crime of the Century
How does my comment qualify but not the submitted article?
StuffedParrot··on Apple's secrecy doesn't work for Apple TV+
I read this as too violent/unfriendly to amass substantial interest from people, not a value judgement per se.
StuffedParrot··on Apple's secrecy doesn't work for Apple TV+
> Apple TV+ is so locked down with DRM that you can't even easily take a screenshot from a show and share it on social media.

This seems incredibly blind. Do they realize how much culture spreads via gifs these days? If anything exporting clips and screenshots should come built-in.

StuffedParrot··on Bloody Harvest–How Everyone Ignored the Crime of the Century
How convenient that the part of humanity they finger out as running the “crime of the century” is economically opposed to Quillete’s love of the american free market. In reality both these governments are just as bad. Chinese and muslim? Have your culture destroyed. Bad luck with the law in the US? Have your life destroyed, either by bullets or neglect in camps or prison.

Compare this to all the people who have been incarcerated for drug posession, if they were not originally framed. Why would china pay any attention to our LACK of morals? We have no ground to stand on.

StuffedParrot··on Why are we using black box models in AI when we don’t need to? (2019)
> So uhhh, isn't this like not science?

Very little of technology has anything to do with validating hypotheses.

> meaning that humans, even those who design them, cannot understand how variables are being combined to make predictions.

The intention is to not rely on the explanation to evaluate the effectiveness of the model. This does not preclude any of the infinite narratives that might explain the model.

This is fundamentally a cost saving mechanism to avoid hiring engineers to code heuristics useful to business. There is nothing related to science here at all. A "black box" model is fashionable to those who prefer to observe and not create meaning, even if the observed meaning is deeply flawed from a human perspective. After all, people spend money based on less all the time.

StuffedParrot··on Why are we using black box models in AI when we don’t need to? (2019)
Absolution of liability. Why else use the term "AI" to describe your heuristic?
StuffedParrot··on Fresh Cambridge Analytica leak ‘shows global manipulation is out of control’
Do you accuse people of the obvious a lot? Because manipulative ads seem to be the lingua franca of us politics.
StuffedParrot··on U.S. government limits exports of artificial intelligence software
Why not ban heuristics altogether?
StuffedParrot··on Fresh Cambridge Analytica leak ‘shows global manipulation is out of control’
Not ironic at all! If I were a foreign entity pushing for bilateral agreements I would seed paranoia and doubt everywhere I could. The degree of explicit control that comes out of this manipulation is miniscule compared to its destabilizing effects on political focus.
StuffedParrot··on The Light Phone
The xr starts at $600. It’s a rich person fantasy that you’d go for two fallible devices which work poorly for basic things like texting, ride hailing, looking up menus rather than one device that does more.
StuffedParrot··on College as an incubator of Girardian terror
> I'm not sure where this author went to college, but outside of a major city like London or NYC, you'd be hard pressed to find a more experientially diverse place (in America, at least) even amongst freshmen.

This seems to be a different claim than “they get the same indoctrination as each other”, which certainly seems fairly true from the fallout in a 9-5 job.

Granted, I think this is more of a problem with the “ivies” (public and private) than an endemic one as there’s less pressure to politically and economically conform.
