I am a neuroimaging scientist with expertise in autism, memory function, and brain development. I am also a part-time coder, part-time composer, and part-time table-top enthusiast.

SubiculumCode··on Gemini 4 Carbon
Yes, but last time I asked copilot to provide an alt text for an image depicting a experimental procedure using rodents, it suggested "A rat being attacked by another group of rats".
SubiculumCode··on Three new discoveries in mathematics, computer science, and physics
What is weird is criticizing people who acknowledge good things because of past bad things when nothing anyone said here, that I can see, anything close to "they are redeemed rejoice!"
SubiculumCode··on Demis Hassabis shortens AGI timeline from five to two to three years
It's already here, imo
SubiculumCode··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
Too late, I hope lawsuits will make them pay dearly for their gross negligence.
SubiculumCode··on Hybrid Reasoning Agents: LLM agents that think in latent space, act through text
I could imagine that you could loop over and over, but direct the outputs of each layer to two destinations: a) to continue through the layers, looping, and b) a separate CoT text output layer to make those CoT concrete. In fact, the model itself would not need to be aware or have access to those CoT traces at all. I am not an AI guy, so I don't know for sure, but that seems reasonably possible.
SubiculumCode··on How Quickly Can the DoD Rebuild and Recast the Munitions Industrial Base?
You might be right, but it isn't clear to me that that means the near-shoring hypothesis is wrong. Wresting control from the Cartel in the south can be a goal of its own right, but would also seem to support a goal of establishing more influence in the region for nearshoring our supply lines, as well as establishing another source of oil to counteract anticipated disruptions in the Iranian conflict.
SubiculumCode··on How Quickly Can the DoD Rebuild and Recast the Munitions Industrial Base?
Isn't the strategy to nearshore production, and recent moves in South America were potentially done to reduce Chinese/Iranian/Russian influence in those regions?
SubiculumCode··on Hybrid Reasoning Agents: LLM agents that think in latent space, act through text
It's not entirely false...actually our best current technique...but we need more and better methods.
SubiculumCode··on Hybrid Reasoning Agents: LLM agents that think in latent space, act through text
Isn't this what openai is doing, at least in spirit, by running multiple passes through the network before exhibiting thinking tokens? Isn't the same issue one of safety and control, because being able to interpret thinking tokens helps u control / monitor unwanted behaviors, and multiple passes before writing out the thinking tokens increases their capacity for deception?
SubiculumCode··on The Brain Sandwich
Yep, it's AI - Meat - AI
SubiculumCode··on Show HN: The Zelda timeline to catch up before the Ocarina of Time remake
I'm not cynical about the games, I'm cynical that the games have any relation to each other in their plots.
SubiculumCode··on Show HN: The Zelda timeline to catch up before the Ocarina of Time remake
I've only played a handful of these games .. but do they work together as a theme or story progression or are they, as I suspect, pretty much independent rehashes with no real relationship other than making money and appeasing fans?
SubiculumCode··on Laser Fault Injection on a Budget: RP2350 Edition
I did not know that about laser fault injection, at all. What practical uses has this technique found? Analysis of foreign military hardware? Cracking into secured systems?

and others. Hippocampal sparse coding/orthoganalization/pattern separation and completion/etc may be interesting search terms for you, if you are unfamiliar. If you do happen to be a hippocampal nut like I used to be during grad school, I salute you

SubiculumCode··on Artificial intelligence is capitalism's final destination
Well, it's not about capitalism anymore because the West will be damned if they'd let a Chinese AI destroy the world first, and so too would the Chinese be damned if they'd let the West's AI have that sole honor. ...and so everyone must stay in the race. Solving that geopolitical conundrum is not optional.
SubiculumCode··on Blood cells from 80-year-old donor become stem cells with molecular age under 20
More like we solve aging but then we get smacked down by our new AI overlords
SubiculumCode··on Using AI for just 10 minutes erodes your ability to persist at hard things
How would you see people who are living out somewhere alone?
SubiculumCode··on 3rd Yandex Cloud Data Center Was Hit
Yes, Putin cornered himself, the ambitious evil idiot...especially after their official act of joining the invaded lands to Russia.
SubiculumCode··on 3rd Yandex Cloud Data Center Was Hit
Conscripts didn't typically come from the lands around Moscow, but from the poor peoples who are very far away from wealth and power. For most there, it was only Ukraine's drone attacks that made them feel at war
SubiculumCode··on 3rd Yandex Cloud Data Center Was Hit
Agreed. While Ukraine targets energy and technological/manufacturing enablers of war, Russia continues to indiscriminately bomb Ukrainian cities, apartment buildings being their favorite. Fck Russian Imperial asperations and their murderous invasion of Ukraine.
SubiculumCode··on The RAM shortage is bringing back DDR4
There is such demand for the GPUs, for example, it seems that they can pick the winners and demand they abide with terms.
SubiculumCode··on 500B Tokens Later: Letting AI Agents Decompile a First-Person Shooter
Byte exact seems only of interest to preserve known bugs etc for cheats/shortcuts/etc.
SubiculumCode··on 500B Tokens Later: Letting AI Agents Decompile a First-Person Shooter
So you restricted it to implementing the same function (same inputs, outputs, dependencies as original?) and prevented the agents from making design decisions by keeping it's scope restricted?
SubiculumCode··on A city-building game in which the city would prefer you didn't
Yes. Agreed. I liked the civic engagement. With the Target thing though, opponents were just a bit hypocritical. Davis residents were already going to a Target: they were driving to Woodland or Vacaville for their serious shopping.
SubiculumCode··on A city-building game in which the city would prefer you didn't
Some context, because it is definitely an insider joke.

Davis had a long and contentious civic debate on whether or not Target should be allowed to build a store in Davis, eventually Davis held a city wide vote on the matter, which did pass [1].

Davis voters reject Measure V, spiking plans to build Village Farms housing [2].

Just a couple of examples where growth that most cities would approve without thought became a city wide civic issue that the community actually voted on.

SubiculumCode··on A city-building game in which the city would prefer you didn't
Davis, CA. lol
SubiculumCode··on Eye of Sauron: Long-Range Hidden Spy Camera Detection
True...but I suppose such shielding may make it harder to disguise...maybe...I don't know. In any case, I wonder how it would do in noisy environments (a couple of computers and phones in the room).
SubiculumCode··on OpenAI Withdraws 3 Math Papers
You do not know whether pointing a model at the paper and asking to check the proof would not eventually also find the error.
SubiculumCode··on “Math 2.0” will need to value mathematical progress more holistically
I feel like there first will be a lot of rationalizations, hamd-wringing, and existential tummy aches, but then the eventual resigned acknowledgment (just like in Chess), that humans do math because they like to do math, not because humans will ever again be as good as computers are at math, then come to make discernments between human math proofs, and the work of an engine, maybe they'll even start start doing proofs on short time controls and stream it on Twitch.

Because the other solutions are to a) quite literally become inhuman, with cyborg integrated TPUs running local models and networked interfaces to propierary models run in data centers, or b) assert dominance of human ignorance by burning civilization down, which doesn't sound pleasant.

SubiculumCode··on Claude Code’s suggested message feature: I think the real customer is the model
So..they don't have to show you a a prefilled prompt to evaluate the accuracy of their guesses...in fact it biases the user's response toward the prediction, making it less independent. If anything, that they are showing it indicates that they feel they've reached a prediction accuracy already at a level useful to users.
