SuperGent··on Kevin Kelly's 2016 AI Predictions, 10 Years Later
In 2016 Google was riding high on DeepMind with Alpha Go, etc. I don't think that it was a big stretch to say they would dominate AI in 10 years. It does if you define the meaning of AI though (LLMs, ML, DRL, etc)
SuperGent··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
This is going to seem boring compared to others, but I'm working on learning enough AI Systems Engineering, in order to get to the point where I can direct and orchestrate AI agents for multiple hours/days and building a harness to help with that. Hopefully this will help my job security, unless the AI goes enough AGI to not need software engineers anymore. It's also really interesting and fun.
SuperGent··on De-Brainrot Vacations
Certainly, AI is allow us to 10x our code, but also 10x our mental work. Steve Yegge calls this the AI Vampire[0] and it does effect us, more so than TV or old school social media ever did. My father went through a stroke a few years ago, and is now always online. He blames the stroke for his brain fog, but I still feel that the modern day dopamine addiction is a huge factor.

SuperGent··on Majority of gig economy workers are earning below minimum wage: research
I think the op here was pointing out that in some gig jobs, you only get paid whilst doing the task (eg delivering the food) rather than the time they are available to work, such as waiting for a food order. The worker can't do anything else whilst waiting, but still doesn't get paid.
SuperGent··on Supertokens: Open-Source Alternative to Auth0 / Firebase Auth / AWS Cognito
This would, of course, depend on the code. But you could ask it to rewrite the code in another language, and add it; claiming it was your own work (which it is, just using an AI tool) This again opens up the debate of AI generated vs 'hand written' code...

SuperGent··on I got 10k post karma on Reddit with (and without) fast.ai
I think that they are a measure of how much you participate in the community here. I've been a member for 6 years, but as I usually lurk, my karma is low. I don't use karma as a measure of other posters but I can see why the management locks certain features for those with higher points.
SuperGent··on ‘Copyright Troll’ Loses Legal Battle and Must Pay $172k
As an ex-fashion photographer, I can tell you that people using your photos, without permission, is almost standard. The only way to get people to respect the copyright is to threaten legal action. NB: I am not condoning the actions of this guy, who it seems was offered, I feel, a fair price ($1000) but wanted more, but it is a real issue for small guys who are not lawyers.
SuperGent··on BBC Computer Literacy Project 1980 – 1989
I recently contacted the BBC regarding this as I was involved in the curation of a temporary exhibit at The National Museum of Computing.[0] David Allen, the producer, along with a couple of others involved, were very friendly and keen to see this acknowledged for helping the home computer boom in the UK. For me personally, I don't think I would be where I am today without these programs. [0] https://www.tnmoc.org/news-releases/2020/1/21/reliving-brita...

SuperGent··on Don’t Blame the Internet for New Slang
I always thought that TL;DR was a flippant statement that the post you have made was too long. This seems to have morphed into 'For those who think that this is too long...' often just the important parts, which is usually a summery. I'm sure someone could make a point about using FAQ, etc

SuperGent··on Time to Take Down the Mona Lisa?
I went to the Louvre in April and I came away with the impression that the Mona Lisa was the only painting that is better in photographs then in real life. The hall was packed with people, most of whom had literally walked past 2 other Di-Vinci masterpieces hanging nearby. I can see why the Mona Lisa was voted the most disappointing attraction in the world! The other piece in the museum that is famous for being famous, the Venus de Milo , was similarly surrounded by artwork of a similar level (at least to my untrained eye), also being mostly ignored by the crowds. The Louvre, however, is an excellent place to visit if you avoid the crowds.

SuperGent··on The divorce rate has fallen because the demographics of marriage have changed
I would also be interested to see if the divorce rate of first marriages has changed. I assume that people getting married later in life is due to a reduction in the 'moral' pressure of living together.
SuperGent··on Can Chess Survive Artificial Intelligence?
Yes, but if you cheat with a car in the 100m pretty much everyone will know. Although this has been done with longer races. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Lorz)

Also, someone needs to scrape, check, pack and unpack the boxes. I can't see this saving money, especially at places with high turnover.
SuperGent··on Powerless investors vote overwhelmingly to oust Mark Zuckerberg as chairman
The man owns the company, or at least 60% of the vote, and can do what he likes with it. If you don't like it get out or stay out of investing in Facebook, especially if you think that he will bring down the share price.
SuperGent··on Can your employer fire you after you quit?
Indeed, the only time I have seen this is when someone was being investigated for gross misconduct, or a 'surprise' redundancy. I assumed that the company just didn't want anything untoward happening.
SuperGent··on The one-salary experiment, ten years in
Some years ago, I accidentally ordered two new phones from different providers at the same time. AS I had a 14 day 'cool off' I phoned one company to cancel, as I didn't like that phone, and they offered me a much better deal. I then phoned the other to pretend to cancel and got a reduction in my bill there!
SuperGent··on This person does not exist
I noticed that whenever there was more than one person, or something touched the face, the results looks horrific.
SuperGent··on Rules for a Better Conference Name Badge (2017)
I'm surprised that this sort of thing hasn't been addressed before. At most big conferences, the exhibitors want to know who you are, where you work and what you do and bigger/more clear the badge is will only help them. Of course, this can make some people feel uncomfortable, but this rarely stops organisers.
SuperGent··on The Personal Toll of Whistle-Blowing
When asked about the Freedom fine, [Patel] responded, "I decided to take it as a cost of doing business."

This is the problem, why should you not take dubiously legal or moral action, if there isn't a significant deterrent?

SuperGent··on How Restaurants Got So Loud
Traffic makes a big difference. I was in Venice recently, and the only noise I could hear was suitcases rolling over the cobbles. It really brought home how much noise traffic makes.
