SushiMon··on Om Malik has died
I had the pleasure of interacting with Om a couple of times. Certain people in this world, you can tell that they are incredibly genuine, with no artifice. That was him 100%. He will be missed.
SushiMon··on No science, no startups: The innovation engine we're switching off
TBH, it makes sense for large incumbents to sell out science on the altar of politics because they are now will profit more from rent seeking than from innovation.
SushiMon··on I ditched Docker for Podman
Were there any missing/worse functional capabilities that drove you over to Podman/alternatives? Or just the licensing / pricing?
SushiMon··on Show HN: Engineering.fyi – Search across tech engineering blogs in one place
Feature request -- allow users to add RSS feeds of blogs they want to follow, allow filtering by date
SushiMon··on How to Get an Em Dash (or a sign of how Big Tech is an utter failure)
For some stupid reason, in all browsers it is an insane chore to add an em dash to any document or email. So much so that news hacker Dan Sinker built this.
SushiMon··on Building Self-driving Kafka clusters using open source components
NATS is open source and CNCF. Redpanda is more a SaaS -- if it goes away, so does your app.
SushiMon··on Announcing Limited Availability of DigitalOcean Kubernetes
Nice to see a relatively simple option to spinning up K8S in the cloud.
SushiMon··on Hands on with Linkerd 2.0
Right - meaning live configured Grafana dashboards, TLS up and running, etc - beyond just console stuff.
SushiMon··on Hands on with Linkerd 2.0
The post is long but it was really written from the POV of an infrastructure owner (DevOps) and not from the POV of a service owner/developer which is actually the target for Linkerd 2.0. FWIW - the post says it takes 5 mins to install Istio. I find that very, very hard to believe.
SushiMon··on Open-Sourcing Our Analysis
I'm a big fan of using this type of visualization to add an extra dimension in a digestible way. Adding the third dimension is always the toughest one.
SushiMon··on Reddit Plans Cryptocurrency to Give Back to Its Users After $50M Raise
Just what we need! Another Cryptocurrency!
SushiMon··on Find salaries paid at companies using foreign worker data
Server Error 500. Sigh. Yawn.
SushiMon··on Plants in offices increase happiness and productivity
There was actually a NASA study about which plants clean the air for space stations. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_Clean_Air_Study or
SushiMon··on Ask HN: What small things can I do/code for you this weekend?
How are you with Python / ScraperWiki?
SushiMon··on Targeting Direct Cash Transfers to the Extremely Poor [pdf]
A quantitative research paper (not totally unbiased but very well done) on data around giving directly to the extremely poor in Africa
SushiMon··on New Cancer Classification System: Could Allow Better Diagnoses and Treatments
More details and a better story here. http://www.ucsf.edu/news/2014/08/116491/cancer-categories-re...
SushiMon··on Use Google Spreadsheets as a CMS
This is pretty cool. You can do something fairly similar with www.silk.co except it acts more like an online database and less like a static site. Basically, CSV to Website conversion where each page acts like a row on a DB. (Full disclosure - I work for Silk).
SushiMon··on Migrating From AWS to FB
GET Requests are cheap But I was thinking of bandwidth costs to get things out of S3 entirely and do a complete outmigration. But the prices there have come down quite a bit since I last checked.
SushiMon··on Migrating From AWS to FB
I'm wondering if they got nailed by out-migration charges and how much that was. I assume a bunch of their images were in S3. Amazon charges a pretty penny to take things out.
SushiMon··on World Cup data in JSON
I'd add the Kimono Labs has done something quite similar with their World Cup API http://www.kimonolabs.com/worldcup/explorer
SushiMon··on Universities can’t fulfil the myth, but can’t become vocational schools either
The timing of this post is impeccable. A very exhaustive new study came out showing that the value of a college degree is higher than ever.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/27/upshot/is-college-worth-it...

Basically, you go to college in America or you risk being poor for the rest of the your life. Sure, some coders / entrepreneurs can do it without college. And maybe college is the selection process for these success traits. But with this size of differential on a very large sample size, I think its pretty hard to say, at least in earnings power, universities are not fulfilling the myth.

SushiMon··on Ask PG: Is this what you meant by "web-based Excel/database hybrid"?
You mean something like www.silk.co? Full disclosure - I work there. It turns CSVs into a web-based CSV/DB hybrid. Row = page. Column header = key. Column content = value. Collection = Worksheet. You can link worksheets and pivot the views. Also has basic visualizations - pie, line, bar, table, grid maps.
