Tagbert··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
Not all professionals require enhanced processors. Also lots of people want better screens and more ports. Don’t let your assumptions limit you imagination.
Tagbert··on 'I Felt Blind Panic.' They Opened Their New $2k iPhone Duo–and It Broke
It is better clip bait to proclaim "blind panic" than to say "shit, I need to take this back for a replacement".
Tagbert··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
No reason for gorilla-arm when touch is an alternative interaction mode and not a required one. You still have trackpad and keyboard. You can dynamically switch modes depending on the action.

Gorilla-arm was a fear based on the naive idea that if you had touch, you would be required to only use touch for every action.

Tagbert··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
This M6 is the base Pro model. You probably want the M5 pro/max for your LLMs.
Tagbert··on New iPad mini
I think there will be be app integration, but hopefully no App Store. We know that apps can work on HomeView using CarPlay. Not sure that is sufficient long term, perhaps just to jump start things. They may need to enhance that library to allow more kinds of apps to work with HomeView.

Right now, I think they are bringing out an MVP and waiting to see how people react to it and what kinds of things turn out to be useful. When they launched the Watch, no one was sure what kinds of things we would want to do on it. It took a while to see what was useful. I think a model where apps on your phone provide HomeView widgets like the Watch might be better than writing apps specifically for such a device.

Tagbert··on Reforming English Spelling
Most of those are alternate words, not alternate spellings.

It would be helpful to start with some of the worst of the offending spellings such as the “ough” mess. And maybe remove some of the silent b’s with which we were debted by 18th century philologists.

Tagbert··on Apple HomeView
The new Siri is more interactive but it is not designed for a social experience. It is very task focused.
Tagbert··on The technology to eradicate mosquito-borne disease exists
There are still a lot of other mosquito species. removing just the few that carry human disease will not have a major impact on creatures that eat mosquitoes.
Tagbert··on Apple's smart home camera reportedly won't record video
Look at the motivations. What would Apple’s be to record you dancing naked to Taylor Swift.
Tagbert··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
That is completely different from the system management software that handles the drivetrains, braking, etc. Toyota has been good on system management. Just because those both use code, don’t confuse the hardware management code with the Infotainment code.
Tagbert··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
The method of printing is not the major cost differential in a book. Hardbound or softbound, the production costs don’t differ all that much. That is why ebooks are not substantially cheaper than a printed book.
Tagbert··on Apple Mac mini review
What would you cut? The Mini has become more expensive because of RAM and SSD prices. There isn't much you could cut to get down to Neo prices.
Tagbert··on Apple Mac mini review
You may be confusing Honda with Subaru and Mazda who are both using Toyota's hybrid systems.

Honda's hybrid, including their version of eCVT is entirely different.

Tagbert··on English: A vs. An
And peas was both singular and plural like fish.

"I ate a single peas" "I ate many peas"

People thought it was a mistake and generated "pea" for a new singular.

Tagbert··on Apple's Siri AI Can Be Swapped Out for Claude, ChatGPT, Code Shows
You haven’t used the beta
Tagbert··on Will there be a 7G?
In Seattle, I have not seen any instances of mm. It is probably very localized.
Tagbert··on iPhone Duo
Are there any actual small phones on the market, now?
Tagbert··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
Liquid Glass has been refined significantly in the 27 OS's and you have more control over the degree of transparency. Overall stability and performance are better as well.
Tagbert··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
Shipping times have been increasing over the last several months.
Tagbert··on Could We Dredge the Netherlands Without Fossil Fuels?
All too often those have bad environmental impacts of their own. Coconut oil ends up being grown in plantains that require clear cutting natural forests. The agricultural process to plant, grow and harvest sunflowers produces significant CO2 just as it does for growing corn for ethanol.
Tagbert··on Ultraviolet Bird Photography
I'm a little surprised at how little difference there is.

Yes, some of the colors shift due to the false-color addition of the UV channel but there were no new patterns or highlighted areas.

Tagbert··on AI productivity gains are closer to 10% than 10x
There are probably larger gains in some areas like testing and coding. other areas, less so as they depend on messy data. I can tell you that only some areas of project management benefit from AI. the rest is more of a people problem.
Tagbert··on The lost civic life of movie rental stores
we would ask recommendations and discuss experiences of watching various movies with strangers or with people we regularly saw at the video store
Tagbert··on About the security content of macOS Tahoe 26.6
The 27 betas? No, they are generally faster than 26.
Tagbert··on Helium escaping from atmosphere of nearby rocky exoplanet in a habitable zone
Do you have any reference for that? I have a hard time seeing how that would be true once the components were coalesced but maybe before that.
Tagbert··on The Tower Keeps Rising
Apple AirPods and Google buds both can do automatic translation. It's still a little too slow and is a little clumsy to use but it's getting better fast.
Tagbert··on Snails' teeth beats spider silk as nature's strongest material (2015)
Both are in the same order of magnitude.
Tagbert··on Every new car sold in the European Union must include a driver monitoring camera
more likely that this is a harder problem than regulators assume.
Tagbert··on CarPlay Is Additive
You really should keep that child strapped into their car seat.

If you are concerned about blocking visibility, none of the screens are high enough to block view of the area in front of the car. They only block the upper part of the dashboard or some of the hood.

Tagbert··on CarPlay Is Additive
The things that CarPlay does are not the things that are controlled with buttons. Navigation, music, audiobooks, notifications work best with a screen. The driving and vehicle features like heat, blinkers, etc are where you want dedicated physical buttons.
