TheAtomic··on Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
We need more Dolly Partons.
TheAtomic··on Xbox Turns Down Netflix $500M Offer

TheAtomic··on No signs of AI payoff outside the tech sector
"AI does not understand accountability, trust, culture, unwritten rules, ethical trade-offs or fairness, all of which shape reputational risk and ultimately drive revenue growth and profit margins."

For a sec I thought he was talking about private equity.

TheAtomic··on Claude Duet
I built a similar tool with an MCP server on the iPhone. It is really useful, , especially the morning check-in. I've am excited to see what Duet does, and hopefully smooths out.
TheAtomic··on Tesla Roadster
Flies, or jumps?

Dunno. Looks like it jumps. Fying seems to require some degree of control over direction but I'm just a gravity-impaired bidep.

TheAtomic··on Local and Distributed Large LLM Inference with MLX and RDMA on Mac Studio
The coordination with Meta is painfully obvious, and telling. I feel like my trust in Apple (formerly 9/10) is now 6/10, by collaborating with Meta (0/10). It has been a process: before ads, 7/10; before Cook at Trump dinners, 8/10; before "Apple Intelligence," 9/10...it dwindles so quickly even Cory Doctorow would be impressed.
TheAtomic··on Will big software companies (like Adobe) come together to curb AI?
No, they are irrelevant now.
TheAtomic··on Cornell Bans Fraternity Parties
Policy created by someone who never went to a fraternity party. Just ban frats, they serve no useful purpose related to a university's goals.
TheAtomic··on Whatever became of holography? (2011)
I agree with you but honestly, better that than the endless visual chaos of all the ads and popups. If they can make revenue from bots and make the human reader experience better, then great. I'm not saying they won't do both.
TheAtomic··on Triple-A Minesweeper
Is there a help card? Or, how do you turn off the CC captions? They obscure the bottom of the play field on my Mactop.
TheAtomic··on Dots: Always-on agents
That might be the worst advert I've ever seen. People looking up at childish Ai glow up god beings on huge screens in distinctly childish environments, with cliched decision-makers gasping for West Wing energy...repulsive.
TheAtomic··on Meta VR Glasses
Impossible.
TheAtomic··on iPhone Duo
Trucks analogy is interesting. I (temporarily) live in the US South and trucks are 3:1 to all other vehicles here.
TheAtomic··on IBM Bob
Oh Clippy
TheAtomic··on OpenShot 4.0 – Open-source video editor
Ok, all the usuals.

TBF, it is on their home screen, https://www.openshot.org/download/

TheAtomic··on OpenShot 4.0 – Open-source video editor
So it runs on ?

I really wish all s/w had the platform and price in line 1.

TheAtomic··on New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro
The Framework laptop looks interesting
TheAtomic··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
Food reporting is often framed like this, as if the smaller size was a bad thing, or the price / gram, pound or ounce is the relevant criteria. Esp in the case of candy, you would think smaller sizes would satisfy the other framing for food items, esp in America, that over-sized food leads to obesity. It is a lose-lose framing, with nutritional value completely ignored. Instead, the reporting is always how people are being ripped off or making an unhealthy choice.
TheAtomic··on Google Discloses $94.1B in SpaceX Stock, Marking 6% Stake
Actually, that's the service provided by GS, etc. They have those buyers on the other side of their Rolodex.
TheAtomic··on Amid nurse shortage, a university rolls out the welcome mat for men
I don't get it. I'm in the rural south and male nurses are common (although it is facility by facility I imagine). Not as many as women, but still, it isn't something I notice anymore.
TheAtomic··on Gemini 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, and 3.5 Flash Cyber
I have liked using their consumer products but they don't make it easy, that's for sure.
TheAtomic··on Number of days reaching 100°F and 105°F have declined since 1895
Geography and time periods cherry-picking. The US is not the world so this is irrelevant to a discussion re global warming. Pre-1960 in the US includes the Dust Bowl droughts, a multi-year drought with a vicious positive reinforcement loop, exactly the kind of thing we want to avoid by addressing global warming.
TheAtomic··on Focus
Focus on making the world a worse place. Great. Please retire.
TheAtomic··on Mag 7 starting to underperform [pdf]
That free cash flow drop at AMZN is surprising.
TheAtomic··on U.S. government will decide who gets to use GPT-5.6
It sounds nice but you end up with entrenched special interests that later oppose all regulation regardless of the consequences. We have pesticides you wouldn't want anywhere near your children casually used to control weeds on kid's playgrounds, insanely huge trucks that kill hundred each year, the food is garbage...the list is long and tiresome. Trust me brother, if I could live in the EU, I would.
TheAtomic··on Show HN: TownSquare, a tiny presence layer for websites
This is really cool. Is there anyway to keep some people off my small part of the webverse?

Having read some of the comments, I'd happily use if there was a way to blast (prefarably with a Doom shotgun) some of the miscreants from appearing, but only on my site, and maybe some filters (slurs, etc) that auto-ban them that I can set. Other people could moderate as they will but I'm kind of tired of the toxic people ruining everything.

TheAtomic··on The desperation of NYTimes
The fact that this somewhat banal article has climbed this far on HN tells you that the schadenfreude of seeing the NYT berated is high indeed.

TheAtomic··on Griffin PowerMate driver for modern macOS
I love this. PowerMate was the ultimate fidget tool when not scrolling, editing, etc.
