The_Blade··on Charles Tandy, the mastermind behind Radio Shack
i learned how to write BASIC on a Tandy Color Computer 3 but that is not what I am most proud about. I was officially (statistically) the worst salesperson at Radio Shack in northern Ohio one summer in college. I looked like a dynamo of productivity, but in actuality I was mostly spending time talking to a Ham radio operator about diodes or a musician customer about King Crimson and Can. Take your name and address. Pffft, I would often make something up so nobody noticed. I sold a computer to a woman for her daughter going to college and felt dirty but there was no other way she was getting a computer. I hope she went on to become an astronaut, or principled House member

i just learned there are about 100 Tandy Leather stores out there if you want to pay tribute

The_Blade··on Police chief unplugs cameras after Flock ignores contract cancellation
oh that doesn't count, it is part of the Plymouth Syndicate

but doing a little legwork it looks like Flock has done that in Evanston and Cambridge. rollin' in hot with the Fall River Five

The_Blade··on Police chief unplugs Flock cameras after company ignores contract cancellation
> They've even been caught putting them back up or re-enabling them in places where the contract has been canceled.

Where? I live in Denver, are there clandestine Flock folks running around in fake electrician outfits like a cheap imitation of the Town? we could use a little Situationist urban guerilla theater here, complete with the vacant commercial space repurposed for data centers

The_Blade··on The Map Is Not the Territory
It's hard to discuss "the map is not the terriory" without a reference point to the person who coined the term, Alfred Korzybski. I don't know General Semantics enough to guess whether he and Alex Karp would be besties today or not.

On the subject I also really like a story by Borges titled "On Exactitude in Science." In it depicts an empire so precise its cartography is 1:1 with the empire itself; hilarity ensues. Now, who hasn't felt that way about [insert whatever SDLC] from time to time?

The_Blade··on US designates helium as a critical material
> C'mon... First, there's no infrastructure in the US to process the gas and purify to semi manufacturing levels

Not true. As an example, Air Liquide tanks take semiconductor grade pure helium from Ladder Creek in Colorado to international semi labs:

https://tumbleweedmidstream.com/

(I noticed now because Colorado has a weird Natural Gas bill on the docket)

The_Blade··on LeCun has "zero concerns" about AI wiping out humanity, recent "rogue" incidents
> If you build the world’s fastest train, start it up with no driver and don’t finish the tracks, when it crashes, it’s just your fault. Not the train’s.

i call the big one Bitey

The_Blade··on Mike Tomlin spent 12 years building a Minecraft city
> The Browns did bottom out to get Baker Mayfield; how’d that go?

Browns fan in. Baker had them legit good the COVID year - beat the Steelers in the playoffs, then lost to the Chiefs in large part to a hugely controversial call. Then Baker hurt his non-throwing shoulder trying to tackle someone on and interception that happened because the sprinter masquerading as a wide receiver (Anthony Schwartz) stopped his route. Then Jimmy Haslam, already famous for being a criminal and drafting Johnny Eightball when told to do so by a houseless person in downtown Cleveland told him to, made one of the worst trades in NFL history. Andrew Berry has had really good drafts the last two years which underscores your point.

Funny that Aaron Rodgers thought he would go #1 to his hometown 49ers who instead took Alex Smith. And that SF is killing it this year with Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy (further demonstrating your point).

I was also in Boston when Tom Brady happened; earlier that year I nearly physically ran into Drew Bledsoe. Just to keep things nerdy on HN, later that year I brought down the uni's network but it was not Harvard. Maybe I shouldn't have paid attention to sports so much

The_Blade··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
that is why this post is looney tunes
The_Blade··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
because he is a charlatan who doesn't like being called out for being unoriginal
The_Blade··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
> I have read Cline's work. He is not the original source of the ideas on bronze to iron transition. This is a very well studied topic in archeological metallurgy.

have you? i don't understand what you are bringing to the table. any real scientist discusses the shoulders they stood upon

The_Blade··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
my favorite details? this is like someone claiming to discover The Calculus in 1732 and conveniently forgetting to mention Newton or Leibniz
The_Blade··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
in theory, a delicate ecosystem built around Bronze collapsed. to make weak sauce Iron work you had to be a) very desperate and b) very clever. which scales for those who figure it out

the post in question doesn't even mention Ugarit. or Arsenic. i am genuinely pissed off at the original tome being passed off as genuine discourse:

just pure charlatanry
