I'm a professional programmer who has just recently allowed himself to be called a programmer. I'm a published writer, graphic designer, and single father of one.

I focus mainly on Ruby, Haskell, and Erlang. I loath (even if they're just tools) C, C++, and Java. I love the Ruby Philosophy, even if the Ruby Community has become something I hate (dry, elitist, and greedy).

ThinkWriteMute··on Could Anything Make You Use IE9?
I guess if they ported it over to Linux? Otherwise I physically cant :(
ThinkWriteMute··on Apple Sues HTC for Patent Infringement
Less heat, less space, less crap getting into the computer, less breakable things...

Yes, I fucking do think it'll suck less.

ThinkWriteMute··on Apple Sues HTC for Patent Infringement
Netbooks suck to use, I know because I'm using one right now.

Small, cramped, hot, ugly.

ThinkWriteMute··on Cherokee Web Server
So, as you can see, Cherokee is the fastest and best designed among the modern web servers.

How does this statement hold up against YAWS?

ThinkWriteMute··on Keeping the Pirates at Bay
Eclipse Phase is a roleplaying game that is the first (AFAIK) to come under the Creative Commons license.

They seed their own torrent for the PDF.

They still sell well at $50 dollars, when the average cost of a RPG book is 20-40.

ThinkWriteMute··on Keeping the Pirates at Bay
Right. We see how well that works.

You need to research Eclipse Phase, the RPG.

Scratch that, your ignorance is startling.

No, web browser [form] buttons are not pretty.
ThinkWriteMute··on Google Go captures developers' imaginations
Yet Go still remains as syntax clunky/ugly as ever.
ThinkWriteMute··on Ask HN: What are you working on tonight?
Yes, it was funny to no one. This is why the comment has +5.
ThinkWriteMute··on Ask HN: What are you working on tonight?
And? Some guy posted using the word "nigger". He may not be calling people "nigger", but he used a word that is racially insensitive! Booga booga!

Jesus.

ThinkWriteMute··on Ask HN: What are you working on tonight?
EXCEPT THAT I WASN'T USING IT AS A PEJORATIVE. Jesus fucking christ, this isn't "PC" this is just stupid.
ThinkWriteMute··on Ask HN: What are you working on tonight?
Civility has nothing to do with it. It was a not-so-clever pun. I wasn't actually using it as a pejorative. That should be painfully obvious.
ThinkWriteMute··on Ask HN: What are you working on tonight?
That's so GAE.
ThinkWriteMute··on Ask HN: Web Application Development?
I'm currently heavily entrenched in Sinatra. I'm surprised to learn that Django and Rails do user accounts for you. Crazy.
ThinkWriteMute··on JavaScript zip code to state conversion
I just found this: http://www.census.gov/tiger/tms/gazetteer/zips.txt

So here's my solution:

  def state?(zip)
    zip_code_list = File.open('zips.txt')
    suggested_list = zip_code_list.grep(/(.*"#{zip}\d+".*)/)
  end
ThinkWriteMute··on JavaScript zip code to state conversion
There is no exact way to pump it out. No part of the Zip code actually comes down to a city.

  [#][##][##]
  [State][County/Parish][Area]
Instead you should be giving your users a choice made on exact facts instead of probabilities.
ThinkWriteMute··on JavaScript zip code to state conversion
Here's a ruby version, smaller more compact and easier to update (probably more correct too):

  def state?(zip)
   case zip[0]
    when 0 then states = ['CT','MA','ME','NH','NJ','PR','RI','VT','VI','AE']
    when 1 then states = ['DE','NY','PA']
    when 2 then states = ['DC','MD','NC','SC','VA','WV']
    when 3 then states = ['AL','FL','GA','MS','TN','AA']
    when 4 then states = ['IN','KY','MI','OH']
    when 5 then states = ['IA','HN','MT','ND','SD','WI']
    when 6 then states = ['IL','KS','MO','NE']
    when 7 then states = ['AR','LA','OK','TX']
    when 8 then states = ['AZ','CO','ID','NM','NV','UT','WY']
    when 9 then states = ['AK','AS','CA','GU','HI','MH','FM','MP','OR','PW','WA','AP']
    else return null
   end
   return states
  end
ThinkWriteMute··on Today is the 15th Anniversary of the Apache HTTP Server
That depends on your view. I'd much rather something more modern (YAWS, Ngix, Mongrel) be the most popular.
ThinkWriteMute··on Google slapped with class-action lawsuit over Buzz
Oh for fucks sake I am so tired of this headline coming up. And who are these quoted idiots that can't do even basic research on the topic? fuuuuuuuuuuuu--
ThinkWriteMute··on I don't care about user experience
What I don't agree with is bying a screwdriver with an ergonomic hello-kitty handle that massages your hands and soul (and certain vocal cords) by subsonic vibrations and claim that the experience of using it fully weights up the asteroid-shaped price.

That would be Features, Bob, not User Experience. If you can't tell UX from ... features then I'm not quite sure how the rest of your post is going to stand up.

What I can't understand is the people that like the "user experience" - a horoscope-like vague phrase that can blend into any kind of posh attitude - to describe what they apparently enjoy in a certain tool, brand or lifestyle.

Well, that answers that.

ThinkWriteMute··on Google Buzzed with Lawsuit
Ok seriously, upvoting this guy? His statement and assertions are factually incorrect.
ThinkWriteMute··on Google Buzzed with Lawsuit
Actually, they didn't. You need to read up on your facts. For instance here's a post that sums it up rather nicely:

"No, they didn't. People think that the "want to find out more?" screen was the opt-in point, but it wasn't. The opt-in point was when you made your first Buzz post, when you were told this meant creating a public Google profile."

ThinkWriteMute··on Google Buzzed with Lawsuit
They didn't show people's personal information without their consent. Quit reposting this lie.
ThinkWriteMute··on Martin Fowler's unscientific agglomeration of opinion on version control tools
Yeah, I was there when he hopped on, but very few HN people would actually listen to him (sadly).

ThinkWriteMute··on Martin Fowler's unscientific agglomeration of opinion on version control tools
I'm waiting for someone "popular" to realize how awesome Fossil is. Subv, Git, and Merc can all blow me.
ThinkWriteMute··on 5 million Dropboxes
You know this makes me think: If you could find out if two files are exactly alike, could you then make a cloud storage services that doesn't require uploads of files it already has on the entire cloud?

IE, John uploads True Blood Episode 4, Season 12.

Paul tries to upload the same file. They match exactly (Except maybe for names). The Uploader negates the upload and makes it look like the file is now in Paul's list, when really only one copy exists.

ThinkWriteMute··on Alex Payne — Good Things: Ubuntu and Android
I think the real problem with Linux ui/ux design spawns from the X Server. It's old and decrepit, levied in aged development standards, and guarded by a bunch of grognards who fear change.
ThinkWriteMute··on Alex Payne — Good Things: Ubuntu and Android
I have a serious problem with the UNR: Why the fuck did they include an email client? I mean seriously.

Worse, removing the e-mail client removes the Gnome-Panel. Genius, guys.
