Thirdegree··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (May 2017)

  Location: Tempe, AZ, USA
  Remote: Yes
  Willing to relocate: Yes
Technologies: Python, Tensorflow, C/C++, linux, PSQL
  Résumé/CV: http://thirdegree.github.io/Joel_Christiansen.pdf
  Email: greenbadge.jc+HNJobs@gmail.com
I'm graduating with a degree in CS in a week. My preference would be to work in machine learning/AI, or something that involves working with large amounts of data.
Thirdegree··on Uber is designed so that for one employee to get ahead, another must fail
The answer, by the way, is to light one of the ropes on fire on both ends, the other on a single end. When the first is done, the second has half the time left and you can time whatever contrived thing you're timing with rope.
Thirdegree··on The Algorithms Behind Probabilistic Programming
It feel like a normal font that squished each character into a slightly-too-small box.
Thirdegree··on Introducing unlimited private repositories
> Lastly, this is a huge freebie for individual accounts that now get unlimited repos for $7/month.

It's also nice for student, like myself, who get unlimited private repos for $0 a month.

Thirdegree··on NPM and Left-Pad: Have We Forgotten How to Program?
What would you recommend to a junior CS major to avoid falling into this pattern?
Thirdegree··on Ask HN: What are some examples of beautiful software?
The government should stop hiring HN programmers, that's clearly the problem!
Thirdegree··on In Colorado, a look at life after marijuana legalization
Still 100% true. I turned 20 earlier this month, it has always been easier to get cannabis than alcohol for me.
Thirdegree··on My Little Sister Taught Me How to “Snapchat Like the Teens”
"How does anyone know for sure that all of that traffic (or at least the meta data related to the traffic) is not prepped for data mining on a per-user basis ?"

You can't, but that's not really the point. The point is that it's not permanent in a form that other users can access. Sure, maybe Snapchat stores every picture I ever sent. That sucks and should stop. But at least Grandma can't go back and look at some 2 year old picture I took with some buddies.

Thirdegree··on My Little Sister Taught Me How to “Snapchat Like the Teens”
"What's the point of data if you can't save it? What if you capture a truly awesome moment?"

You can download your own snaps from the app within 24 hours if you posted it to your story (which you probably did).

Thirdegree··on My Little Sister Taught Me How to “Snapchat Like the Teens”
"And unlike some forms of leisure, this one bears no fruit."

Increased connection with peers, for one. It's incredibly easy to network now. I'm young, and wasn't around for what you're looking back on as the good old days, but I disagree that there is no value to being able to send a one off "look what I'm doing" to a friend.

Thirdegree··on My Little Sister Taught Me How to “Snapchat Like the Teens”
"Kids today it seems is responding to selfies"

Which is more social than either of the other hobbies you mentioned. How is it shallow and void of any meaning?

Thirdegree··on Judge tosses proposed class action accusing Google of CAPTCHA fraud
In their defence, reCaptcha are fairly ubiquitous. Very difficult to avoid.
Thirdegree··on A Group of American Teens Are Excelling at Advanced Math
Let me add one more thank you for that blog, it's one of 6 I have saved to bookmarks. I love it!
Thirdegree··on Why are Americans so angry?
My father is very conservative on most issues, where I am very liberal on most issues. We still get along perfectly because politics is not that important. He's still my dad, still a great person, and still an exceedingly good debater.
Thirdegree··on Uninstalling Facebook app saves up to 15% of iPhone battery life
This is the same app I use. No complaints so far.
Thirdegree··on What computer science can teach economics (2009)
I think it has to do with how integral computers are to every other field. Like if everything deeply depended on woodworking to function, carpenters would be offering input on everything.
Thirdegree··on Expand Your Programming Vocabulary (for Beginners)
I think part of it is someone sees a question and thinks "Well why didn't you just google xyz?" without realizing that the only way to know to google xyz is to already know the answer to the question posed.
Thirdegree··on Was Uber’s Branding Done While Uber High?
Pop 101 - Marianas Trench:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kpWkV7IBUw

"Get to the floor

And hear some words you should know

Like "DJ never let me go"

Or "Shots and then we'll lose control"

Or "baby, baby, baby, baby, baby"

How about one more last word like

"Hey girl, we've only got tonight"

Some things just go together like

Higher, desire, and fire

Higher, desire, and fire"

Thirdegree··on Apple’s declining software quality
The only issue I have with spotlight on El Capitan is a strange issue where sometimes after entering the first character the cursor jumps to start again and overwrites the first character, turning a search for "text" which should open TextEdit to "ext" which opens Extractor.
Thirdegree··on On Google's self-driving car acident rates
>Next time you pull up to a stop light, look to the left and then right. I'm willing to be the drivers on the left and or right are looking at their phone.

And the dude between them is busy staring at his neighboring drivers rather than the road!

Thirdegree··on Why a city should not build a stadium for an NFL team
And if you do it enough, you might end up liking it anyway.
Thirdegree··on LSD: My Life-Saving Drug
> Mushrooms seem to guide you to a place, whereas LSD drags you there, whether you want to go or not.

That's interesting. I've never taken mushrooms but I've always heard the opposite, that LSD is easier to guide yourself and mushrooms drag you.

Thirdegree··on Ask HN: How happy are you working as a programmer?
Spiders don't have the luxury to be.
Thirdegree··on Alphabet Becomes the Most Valuable Public Company in the World
Only for people that proactively use it. Speaking of which, I should probably backup again.
Thirdegree··on Michael Crichton and Computers
Prey is one of a very small number of books I never managed to finish because it scared me at the time.
Thirdegree··on Finding a Video Poker Bug Made These Guys Rich
My personal favorite is "United states v. Approximately 64,695 Pounds of Shark Fins". [1]

Thirdegree··on A Site That Teaches You to Code Well Enough to Get a Job
I'm actually having a decent bit of fun with this. The problems aren't challenging by a long shot (at least not yet), but I'm enjoying myself.
Thirdegree··on It is my belief that Apple is working on a new language (2010)
But it's not about "a universe full of monkeys", it's about Infinite monkeys. Significantly more.
Thirdegree··on Using Wikipedia in the classroom: a cautionary tale
Not explicitly, but the difference in "assert their opinions as 'facts'" and "phrase their informative messages as suggestions, offers, and other non-assertive acts." is certainly, in my eyes at least, offering a judgement on which is better.
Thirdegree··on Google’s Revamped Gmail Could Take Encryption Mainstream
In response to 2)

I would say the best way (from Google's perspective) would be a way to flip a switch on a per-email basis. So by default, emails aren't secure, but if you need it you can activate it. I wonder if the loss of data would be worth the increase in users though.
