TimeBearingDown··on Federal judge calls Flock 'indiscriminate mass surveillance'
Just to add, some can identify Bluetooth signals, and I wouldn’t be surprised if identification via direct TPMS (tire pressure) is added eventually.
TimeBearingDown··on When did Google get so weird?
I've had similar issues, but found the situation in some niche topics improved after I used Add Feedback -> AI-generated a bunch.
TimeBearingDown··on Black Holes or Black Hole Stars? Astronomers Spar over 'Little Red Dots'
May Chris Cornell rest in peace. He should have seen this.
TimeBearingDown··on Two computers, one monitor, zero fiddling (2025)
any details? considering this.
TimeBearingDown··on Windows 9x Subsystem for Linux
I remember using 98SE on a 256MB PII laptop for a good while. ME was less stable and 2000 was a bit difficult for some games or at least h
TimeBearingDown··on Professional video editing, right in the browser with WebGPU and WASM
The accepted term is "source available".

Restrictions on usage type are not commonly accepted as open source by any community that I'm aware of.

TimeBearingDown··on The Vietnam government has banned rooted phones from using any banking app
There's a crowd-sourced dataset here: https://privsec.dev/posts/android/banking-applications-compa...
TimeBearingDown··on VPN location claims don't match real traffic exits
Good thing there’s headscale.
TimeBearingDown··on The Anatomy of a macOS App
Millions of Windows power users are accustomed to bypassing SmartScreen.

A macOS app distributed without a trusted signature will reach a far smaller audience, even of the proportionately smaller macOS user base, and that's largely due to deliberate design decisions by Apple in recent releases.

TimeBearingDown··on Windows drive letters are not limited to A-Z
Only the root of the root filesystem is /

The point is that any filesystem can be chosen as the OS’s root.

The root of all other filesystems - there could be multiple per drive - is where you tell the filesystem to be mounted, or in your automounter’s special directory, usually /run/media, where it makes a unique serial or device path.

It's a nice sentiment. The companies with the integrations are the ones that could take it back, but they don't have the incentive to break legal agreements and share with the world.

Meanwhile the creative output of humanity is distilled into black boxes to benefit those who can scrape it the most and burn the most power, but this impact is distributed amongst everyone, so again there's little incentive among those who could create (likely legal) change.

TimeBearingDown··on Weaponizing image scaling against production AI systems
DPO = Direct Preference Optimization, for anyone else.
TimeBearingDown··on Reverse Engineering iOS 18 Inactivity Reboot
this also clears out deeper OS rootkits if they could not achieve reboot persistence, which is not uncommon.

You seem focused on the labor theory of value, and sidestep completely the entire idea of investors, or the entrepreneurial function they serve.

Advocate for higher taxes if you wish, but acknowledge that economics are not a zero-sum game and propose an alternative to savvy investment, unless you simply want to foment division or to upend modern capitalism entirely.

TimeBearingDown··on Trump wins presidency for second time
This raises the lowest rung on the ladder, reduces the set of contracts that adults may consider or consent to, and can eliminate entire jobs and threaten entire sectors such as the old apprentice mechanic / gas station attendant and now fast food.
TimeBearingDown··on GitHub cuts AI deals with Google, Anthropic
Liberians seem quite useful, then! I’ve never been to Africa myself.
TimeBearingDown··on Car brands are collecting and sharing your data with third parties
What’s going to last longer than a mid-00s / early-10s Honda or Toyota?
TimeBearingDown··on Car brands are collecting and sharing your data with third parties
The sweet spot has been 1996-2007 ish for a while.

OBD-II, electronic port fuel injection, decent crash structures and side airbags, often better suspension design, no DI carbon fouling, decent mileage. Cheap parts and nearly no remaining depreciation.

On some cars you can pull a fuse that goes to the cellular modem, like many Fords at least up to around ‘21-‘23.

On others you may need to physically remove the modem if the fuse is going to more components.

Not sure about GPS but yes, some cars lose features when you do this. Can’t believe automakers dropped remote start from the fob just to push people to pay for a monthly subscription.

TimeBearingDown··on Godot Responds to Mass Banning – No Apology, Blames Banned Users
Between this and vaxry’s ouster from freedesktop because his project’s Discord allowed crude and tasteless speech years ago, I’m wondering how many more projects will fracture or make some of their discussion channels private. I believe Free Software will survive social media, but it’s deeply troubling how quickly people insist that they can’t possibly work with someone who has differing politics or worldview in general, or how many actually go and seek out a hill to die on for their tribe. It seems the best policy It reminds me of the old Emo Phillips joke about the Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council. You’ll find a reason to spurn anyone if you look closely enough, and it seems to fill a religion-shaped hole for some culture warriors. https://youtu.be/l3fAcxcxoZ8
TimeBearingDown··on Godot Responds to Mass Banning – No Apology, Blames Banned Users
My understanding is this was the official Discord for years until they distanced themselves from it last year. However, I don’t think there’s an official one, or at least not one that anybody uses.

The community manager blocking everyone on GitHub and X for quoting their founder’s words about not lumping people into groups or staying out of politik is not the same person as the Discord mod “xananax” who was dropping slurs in 2016.

TimeBearingDown··on The internet is worse than it used to be. How did we get here?
Had me until the end. I haven’t seen the friction? Let’s Encrypt and web 1.0 still work and domains are cheap. OpenBSD’s httpd is great for this job. You’ll exclude less people if you don’t require any features. You can still give your site out on big platforms or use a QR code. Users of open social networks can directly transfer value now, with KYC at the on and off-ramps. Telegram was closest to implementing it into a very large and permissive network with open clients, albeit centralized and closed servers, though we’ll see how Durov’s French situation develops now.
TimeBearingDown··on Intel lost the Sony Playstation business to AMD
Great answer. Denuvo and other heavy anti-piracy tools are also sometimes used for releases on PCs which can seriously impact performance.
TimeBearingDown··on Defend against vampires with 10 gbps network encryption
BusKill was created for this, USB with a magnetic attachment to a keyring that can be configured to take action on disconnect.
TimeBearingDown··on Iran turns to Hells Angels and other criminal gangs to target critics
Cool - no worries. Pardon if that sounded like an accusation.
TimeBearingDown··on Iran turns to Hells Angels and other criminal gangs to target critics
If we are to dehumanize career criminals, there are countless thugs, gangs, despots, governments, and militaries with far fewer scruples and a far worse legacy than the Hell’s Angels.

but the point is, dehumanization is anathema to civilized society.

TimeBearingDown··on NASA Pulls Off Delicate Thruster Swap, Keeping Voyager 1 Mission Alive
Modern information access seems to have led to the sinking ship feeling, across many of the most prosperous countries, and so effectively that world wars, deadlier pandemics, and thermonuclear brinkmanship can scarcely compare.
TimeBearingDown··on Apps can now block sideloading easier and force downloads through Google Play
Yep. Could be a big hit to GrapheneOS users. I wonder how Aurora Store will manage.
TimeBearingDown··on Iran turns to Hells Angels and other criminal gangs to target critics
Scare quotes on people? I know I’m a bit sensitive to dehumanization, but really?
TimeBearingDown··on Microwave spontaneously turned on by its LED display
Don’t forget a physical handle to pull open the door.

I’d take a steam sensor as well.

Thanks to Technology Connections, great channel. Convinced me to read all the fine print until I found a Breville that had it. https://youtu.be/UiS27feX8o0
