TimothyBJacobs··on Missing Titanic sub faced lawsuit over depths it could safely travel to
> Oxygen is just about running out in the next few hours,

Official reports have been saying 40 hours a few hours ago.

TimothyBJacobs··on Passkeys now support external providers
> Passkeys = quicker and faster to get a user's email address.

Using passkeys doesn't give a site your email address. The site would have to still ask for your email separately.

TimothyBJacobs··on Decoding small QR codes by hand (2012)
They’re saying that an attacker would register variations of similar looking domains relying on the OCR misreading the correct URL. They aren’t suggesting that an attacker would paste the invalid URL in real life menus.
TimothyBJacobs··on Hikaru Nakamura's Forbidden Platform
You can setup multiple pre-moves, but each one takes a minimum of 0.1 seconds. Lichess doesn't have this minimum time requirement, so it doesn't let you setup multiple pre-moves.

I much prefer Lichess' system for Bullet.

TimothyBJacobs··on Web 3 is Flawed
> They nerf/buff cards all the time.

This is not true. It is exceedingly rare for paper cards to be nerfed or buffed. The only real notable example is with the Companion mechanic from a few years ago. Wizard's solution is to ban problematic cards.

TimothyBJacobs··on What are you doing, WordPress.com?
SpinupWP makes self-hosting WordPress sites really simple. Rarely do you ever need to actually make any changes to your server. You can just give it a Digital Ocean box to connect to, and it provides a UI to create sites and manage everything.

TimothyBJacobs··on Go 1.18
A common API is something like lodash's `partition` so you don't have to loop over the same Array multiple times: https://lodash.com/docs/#partition
TimothyBJacobs··on “We removed the RSS feed since this technology became obsolete”
It is up to the theme to output a visual link to the RSS feed, but unless disabled, WordPress itself will always output a `<link rel="alternate" ...>` tag with an RSS feed.
TimothyBJacobs··on Cloudflare’s CAPTCHA replacement with FIDO2/WebAuthn is a bad idea
A small micropayment makes for a great way for bad actors to test stolen credit card numbers.
TimothyBJacobs··on Vaccinated Americans now may go without masks in most places, the CDC said
That assumes that the vaccine is 100% effective, and that everyone who is at risk can safely take the vaccine. Neither of those are true.
TimothyBJacobs··on Out of prison after 30 years and people telling him to find forms on the web
Do you think prison reform is not a political topic?
TimothyBJacobs··on Utah bill would require activated porn filter software on new phones, tablets
The church did engage in a nearly decade long, multimillion dollar advertising campaign entitled "I'm a Mormon" that ended just in 2018.
TimothyBJacobs··on Hacker increased chemical level at Oldsmar's city water system, sheriff says
Depends how long you can shut it down for. Even if only a few hours, an _unexpected_ shutdown of water across an entire city would certainly cause a panic with people descending on any stores open to buy water.
TimothyBJacobs··on Facebook testing notification to users about Apple privacy changes
They tried offering an ad service called iAd that would do things the "Apple" way. No one used it.
TimothyBJacobs··on Apple First Quarter Results
I'm not a rubyist, but the latest Docker Preview has been working great for me.
TimothyBJacobs··on M1 Macs SSD “Encryption” trivially bypassed unless FileVault is enabled
As mentioned in the article, FileVault is practically enabled by default during setup. IIRC you have to go out of your way not to have it enabled.

> Because users are encouraged during setup to configure FileVault on new devices it is uncommon to see devices without it

TimothyBJacobs··on Apple unveils M1, its first system-on-a-chip for portable Mac computers
They haven't announced a 15/16inch Apple Silicon Mac yet.
TimothyBJacobs··on Epic’s decision to bypass Apple’s App Store policies was dishonest, says judge
No, it doesn't because if you purchase thru Walmart.com they are offering some titles "below" the retail price by Nintendo and Target.
TimothyBJacobs··on Epic’s decision to bypass Apple’s App Store policies was dishonest, says judge
Where are you getting that from? Nearly every "large" switch title has a price of $60. Including ones that are years old.

TimothyBJacobs··on Nova by Panic
It looks great, but I really can't see myself ditching JetBrains. The refactoring tools alone make it a better solution for me.
TimothyBJacobs··on Challenge to scientists: does your ten-year-old code still run?
This is the same as any other argument against testing. Unless you are actually selling a library, code is not the product. Customers are buying results, not your code base. Yet, we've discovered the importance of testing to make sure customers get the right results without issues.

If you want your results to be usable by others, the quality of the code matters. If all you care is publishing a paper, then I guess sure it doesn't matter if anyone else can build off your work.

TimothyBJacobs··on Facebook hate-speech boycott had little effect on revenue
Whether or not that is true, this boycott doesn’t indicate that. The boycott was organized by activists, but the boycott was advertisers not purchasing ads on Facebook. The reason it had little effect on revenue was indicated in the article, while the boycott was made up of the largest advertisers in the world, they weren’t responsible for the majority of Facebook’s revenue in the first place.
TimothyBJacobs··on Schemastore.org – schemas for all commonly known JSON file formats
The JSON Schema specification: https://json-schema.org
TimothyBJacobs··on WeChat permanently closes account after user sets offensive password
> Inspecting the contents of passwords at all is nuts and spectacularly bad.

Evaluating a passwords' strength or complexity is incredibly routine.

TimothyBJacobs··on Away’s former CEO is returning as its co-chief
Why did you take random excerpts instead of looking for the more serious allegations, one of which the parent mentioned.

"The day before Valentine’s Day, Korey decided she was going to stop the team from taking any more time off. In a series of Slack messages that began at 3AM, she said, “I know this group is hungry for career development opportunities, and in an effort to support you in developing your skills, I am going to help you learn the career skill of accountability. To hold you accountable...no more [paid time off] or [work from home] requests will be considered from the 6 of you...I hope everyone in this group appreciates the thoughtfulness I’ve put into creating this career development opportunity and that you’re all excited to operate consistently with our core values.”"

TimothyBJacobs··on Away’s former CEO is returning as its co-chief
Are you saying the workers need to vote with their feet? If so, I disagree. As an employee, I'd always want to try and affect change before leaving. Leaving is the last resort. Complaining is part of trying to affect change, and is one of the "let them know you aren't going to put up with it" step. You seem to be advocating for leaving first.
TimothyBJacobs··on Major union launches campaign to organize video game and tech workers
Are not some of the worst abuses at AAA studios?
TimothyBJacobs··on YouTube seeks 'responsibility'
How does the video host make enough money to keep afloat? A number of YouTube's controversial decisions have had been prompted, at least in part, with advertiser backlash.
TimothyBJacobs··on PHP 7.4
There is ambiguity. This was specifically mentioned in the RFC for the feature: https://wiki.php.net/rfc/arrow_functions_v2#syntax
TimothyBJacobs··on NPM CEO Bryan Bogensberger Resigned
