TradingPlaces··on A brief tour of the PDP-11, the most influential minicomputer of all time (2022)
My high school had one of them in the early 80s. Me and a few others were the only ones who ever turned it on. Then a friend got an Apple ][ and we never touched the PDP-11 again.
TradingPlaces··on How many products does Microsoft have named 'Copilot'?
For a moment it was called Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365. Naming things is hard.
TradingPlaces··on Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol
Naive question. How does the method in the OpenAI and Stripe flow charts differ from buying from a 3rd party seller on Amazon, which requires no agent? I don’t see what the agent is doing independently in the payment part.
TradingPlaces··on Ask HN: Why is "Tea" still on the App Store after so many data breaches?
In the 80s and 90s I was positive that customers would revolt over the constant security issues and generally poor quality of Microsoft software. I don’t need to tell you that it did not happen.
TradingPlaces··on Ask HN: What now occupies a web domain you used to own?
A site in Japanese that has tips on decorating a sushi restaurant.
TradingPlaces··on Steve Jobs' cabinet
Plywood is good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVxldyIa0Bg
TradingPlaces··on Entire staff at federal agency that funds libraries and museums put on leave
All this is illegal:

The Impoundment Control Act

The Administrative Procedure Act

The Civil Service Reform Act

The Museum and Library Services Act

The Appointments clause of Article II of the Constitution

The Take Care clauses of Article II of the Constitution.

Executive orders are not laws and cannot override laws.

TradingPlaces··on GDPNow first quarter of 2025: -2.8% (seasonally adjusted annual rate)
That includes -4.8 percentage points from net trade which comes from two sources:

1) Importers getting ahead of tariffs in Jan and Feb. 2) -2.3 percentage points of the net trade deficit estimate was from imported non-monetary gold, because Americans want portable wealth right now.

The thing to be concerned about is that real consumption is up only 0.3% quarter-over-quarter annualized in this estimate. This is two-thirds of GDP. Investment is actually pretty strong, especially equipment (GPU servers).

TradingPlaces··on The Real Story Behind Sam Altman’s Firing From OpenAI
Selling tokens is likely to be a tough business in a couple of years
TradingPlaces··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
Apple and the FBI were squabbling over this for a few years, and then Apple decided to end the conversation one day and implement ADP
TradingPlaces··on Rumor About GPT-5 Changes Everything
The history of AI is big leaps followed by years of crawl.
TradingPlaces··on Nokia's internal presentation after iPhone was launched (2007) [pdf]
They got so much right and still got swamped.
TradingPlaces··on After twelve years of writing about Bitcoin, here's how my thinking has changed
So the best case is that it is gambling? What are we dong?
TradingPlaces··on Ask HN: Next best to incorporate other than Delaware?
The irreplaceable thing DE brings is the Chancery Court. No better venue for contact cases. Chancellors are very knowledgable, and no nonsense.
TradingPlaces··on Hindenburg Research goes after Super Micro
Right on the heels of claims of accounting irregularities by Hindenburg, Super Micro announced today that they would be filing their annual report late. Very bad look at a minimum, and the stock down 25% today.
TradingPlaces··on Cerebras Inference: AI at Instant Speed
They have a way of bypassing bad cores, and over-provision both logic and memory by 1.5% to account for that. They get 100% yields this way.

TradingPlaces··on Ask HN: Why not replace technical job interviews with yearly standardized exams?
Goodhart’s Law. When a metric becomes a target, it ceases to be a good metric
TradingPlaces··on Was the Real Jobs Revision Negative 818,000 or Negative 915,000?
The biggest issue is that the model for births/deaths of employers was wrong and over-estimating the number of employers. This accounted for about half the revision.

https://www.atlantafed.org/-/media/documents/research/public...

This also means that the other side of the Jobs Report, the household survey, or CPS, is undercounting employment by ~3 million, but that one never gets revised.

TradingPlaces··on Hermes 3: The First Fine-Tuned Llama 3.1 405B Model
I did not have great luck with 405b on an M1 Max Mac Studio with 64 GB of RAM via olama. I think memory was this issue. 70b runs with acceptable speed
TradingPlaces··on Apple Intelligence Foundation Language Models
Trained on TPU4, not GPUs. The only GPUs involved are on Apple Silicon.
TradingPlaces··on Ask HN: Can anyone from Crowdstrike explain the back story?
I am not from Crowdstrike, but they were under pressure in 2022-2023 to show a profit. They did that by cutting expense growth across the board, and I am now guessing QA got hit particularly hard.
TradingPlaces··on Ask HN: What is your experience with Claude 3.5?
Pro user. I use it primarily for stock analysis. I feel like it is a step up from 3.0 Opus in “intelligence,” but a massive improvement on speed when I fill up the context window with documents, which is often. Looking forward to the Opus variant. FWIW it writes R and pandas code pretty well, but I haven’t used that extensively.
TradingPlaces··on Asus' first Snapdragon X Elite laptop (mostly) blows away the MacBook Air M3
The more relevant comparison is to similarly priced Intel/AMD laptops, not the MacBook Air. And all these Copilot+ PCs have fans, so I think the 14” MacBook Pro is the more relevant comparison for a Mac.
TradingPlaces··on ChatGPT Is Bullshit
My view is that there is extrapolation going on. They look at the progression of GPT 2-3-4 over a relatively short number of years and are extrapolating to a near future where these things are much more capable. FOMO. But the history of AI is huge leaps from a technological innovation, followed by years of crawl, and all this extrapolation may be wrong.
TradingPlaces··on Ask HN: What macOS apps/programs do you use daily and recommend?
Default Folder X: Open/Save dialog enhancer.

Copy ‘Em: Copy/paste enhancer.

Little Snitch: Hugely useful firewall.

Parallels for virtualization.

Find Any File: Search for stuff in /System and /Library not in Spotlight index.

Cookie: Manage cookies.

TradingPlaces··on Show HN: I built a website to create financial models for any stock online
Thanks for clearing that up
TradingPlaces··on Show HN: I built a website to create financial models for any stock online
Everyone: This is a nice simple interface for making a discounted cash flow (DCF) model, and the pro version lets you export that to Excel. There’s still a lot of work to fill in those fields. More on DCF: https://corporatefinanceinstitute.com/resources/valuation/dc...

OP: What are “AI Models"
