TylerE··on New Withings Users Must Pay $99/Year for Apple Health Syncing
Turn it on on the passenger seat to keep your take out food warm while you drive home.

Also good for those of us with back issues. I use mine even in the summer sometimes for that reason.

TylerE··on Fingerprints are the new cookies
RFC 2109 predates anything that vaguely resembles PHP, and Netscape (thus, defacto, basically everyone using the internet), had cookies 3 years before the RFC. PHPSESSID wasn't added until PHP 4 in 2000.

If you're going to be a bitchy pedant, you'd damn well better be CORRECT.

TylerE··on LA Metro has some of the slowest escalators
Unfortunately NY transit sucks if you're disabled and can't deal with stairs.
TylerE··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
No. Huge difference between exact matching and fuzzy search.
TylerE··on 9 Ads per Minute: FIFA Cup 26 – "the price of the beautiful game"
NBA has had ads on jerseys since the 2017 season.

MLB since 2023.

TylerE··on Grok 4.7
Absolutely not. Makes about as much sense as judging a car based on how good an airplane it makes.
TylerE··on Bill to Ban Private Equity from Owning Medical Practices
They don't. They lend to the target company BEFORE the buyout.
TylerE··on Bill to Ban Private Equity from Owning Medical Practices
They sell off everything of value before it implodes and cash out. THEN they let it implode with nothing but the debt remaining.
TylerE··on Bill to Ban Private Equity from Owning Medical Practices
Why does everything have to be obsessed with growth? Especially with practically every (first world, at least) country having a birth rate well below replacement.
TylerE··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
You haven’t seen either of the last two MSFS releases have you? They’re using high res satellite imagery of the entire globe. Even small towns are shockingly detailed.
TylerE··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
True realism is often interesting though, which provides more long term engagement than fleeting shallow fun. Look at some of the hard core 3rd party addons for flight sims, for instance, which are so realistic they actually ship licensed versions of the real aircraft training manuals and checklists - because every switch and procedure works.
TylerE··on There's a new "Google Jail" for independent wikis
It's two english words both of which have negative conotations?

TylerE··on Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread
Lotta racists and other bigots that like a president that "agrees" with them.
TylerE··on GPT-6 Astra
Successful, sure.

Gold medal Olympic athletes who are also brain surgeons AND astronauts, no.

TylerE··on Go grandmaster Shin defeats AI KataGo with a two-stone handicap
Depends on what chess rating you're talking about. Online at fast time controls, where many many more games get played at than OTB classical, the top super GMs are rated in the 3400-3600 range.
TylerE··on Google avoids a breakup of its ad tech business
That was reverting a rename. Denali was the original name.
TylerE··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
Oh, come on. What a bunch of scare mongering crap. Yes, if you tell Apple to store something on iCloud it...stores it on iCloud.

That your examples are rather weak proves my point, not the opposite.

TylerE··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
Not in the slightest. Who do you believe works more for consumer privacy and security? Meta? Google? Microsoft?
TylerE··on Dwarf Fortress is getting the mother of all magic updates
That's because the UX/UI is utterly awful. It's cargo cult: the game. (And BTW my complaints have nothing to do with the controls. The actual UX is just... not thought out at all).
TylerE··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
In what universe? Apple is by far the most consumer friendly big tech company.
TylerE··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
On Mac it is very obviously quite a bit worse than both Chrome and Safari.

Scammers had entire TV networks.

TylerE··on Stop Making TUIs
> GUIs tend to be made for the non-technical iPhone audience.

Except for, you know, every serious professional application ever.

TylerE··on Stop Making TUIs
Not fast.
TylerE··on Stop Making TUIs
How so? The idea is you build all the OS specific stuff into the terminal, not into the programs running INSIDE the terminal. Think Infocom Z-Machine, at the ultimate level, although obviously emulating a full on virtual CPU is overkill.

In any case we can surely do better than emulating DEC hardware from 50 years ago.

TylerE··on OTel isn’t going well
At some point your monitoring is burning 10x as much CPU as the actual task...
TylerE··on OTel isn’t going well
At that point you almost might as well just log everything. The decision logic is likely about as complex as just doing it. Then I suppose you have a watchdog task that fires off every, say, 15 minutes or an hour or something, looks at the collected data, and either decides to keep it or trash it while recording a tiny "nothing interesting" datapoint.
TylerE··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
A lot of that is ultimately ping time, too though. Like making a naive number of round trips to a database not on the same machine.
TylerE··on Show HN: We chased a weather balloon across Montana and never found it
What's expensive? You can buy a medium sized cooler for $5 at Walmart. That's a fair bit of foam.
