Un1corn··on Israeli-founded app preloaded on Samsung phones is attracting controversy
Which _Israeli_ companies were used for Stuxnet or the 2024 pager attack? NSO is not the same as the company from the article since it's explicitly a cyber company.
Un1corn··on Craft Chrome Devtools Protocol (CDP) commands with new command editor
I haven't used the devtools protocol of Firefox but CDP is one of the worst protocols I had to work with. Everything is "experimental", inconsistencies between different domains, multiple ways to do some stuff and revealing internal stuff.
Un1corn··on Systemd can be a cause of restrictions on daemons
> systemd is a suite of basic building blocks for a Linux system.

You can always use a simpler init system if you want

Un1corn··on Meduza co-founder's phone infected with Pegasus
This is absolutely not enough against targeted attacks. It will be harder to detect you but once they do, Firefox (which Tor is based on) is a lot more vulnerable than Chrome. Same for Android, the locked bootloader and such can be helpful in this situation.
Un1corn··on A look into the finances of SpaceX
I think most people focus on bringing back far-right people to the platform, making the application inaccessible to logged out users and the failed attempts at Twitter Premium or whatever it's being called.
Un1corn··on Want employees to return to the office? Then give each one an office
My office is half an hour by foot from my house and yet I prefer to work from home exactly for this reason. Maybe in America where the commute can become ridiculous quickly it's a problem but here I just take an e-scooter if I don't want to walk. A better office would certainly make me come to the office more. But to be fair, even the CEO doesn't have his own office currently so I don't expect any of us to get one soon.
Un1corn··on “Our paying customers need X, when will you fix it?”
I don't think the person was important but the employer might. It seems to be IBM which is not surprising I guess, although I'd hoped that RedHat would influence how they work with open source somehow.
Un1corn··on Linux Namespaces Are a Poor Man's Plan 9 Namespaces
Yes, Plan 9 made some bad choices in retrospect, at least in my opinion. The big dependency on the mouse is one of them but also assuming people will be in managed networks.
Un1corn··on I give up on free software phones (2019)
When I wrote it, from the options you mentioned, only Ubuntu phone existed and it was after Canonical abandoned it. So in 2019 it really felt like Android was the only option.
Un1corn··on KeyDB – A Multithreaded Fork of Redis
Please don't try to delude people by changing the definition of open source. While sadly Open Source Initiative were not able to get the trademark for open source, the de-facto definition of open source is practically the same as free software.

Dragonfly is source available which is a completely different thing.

Un1corn··on Microsoft is slowly rolling out ads in the Windows 11 start menu
I'm pretty sure MOTD is only shown on server installations
Un1corn··on Virtual Threads Arrive in JDK 21, Ushering a New Era of Concurrency
This is a pretty terrible comparison, suitable for those X-vs-Y websites. While on paper Go and Java have a lot in common, in practice their philosophies differs enough to produce different enough languages.

I've used both Java and Go and I can tell you, there is no right or wrong but they differ a lot in their ecosystem, tooling and in design patterns. I don't see myself going back to Java because of the virtual threads.

Un1corn··on Why “OpenBSD Mastery: Filesystems” Is Not in Amazon’s Kindle Store
Maybe they intentionally want to keep books below 10 dollars?

Maybe they figured that in the end they have a lot more cheap books than a few that might be more than double because of the non-progressive scale.

Un1corn··on Meson Build System 1.0
Meson generates Ninja files. At first, you were supposed to run ninja after Meson yourself but modern Meson support meson compile which calls ninja under the hood
Un1corn··on The Audacity of Piping Curl to Bash
I don't remember all of the times I've encountered it but a couple of examples I remember are rustup with its 700 lines of shell script (although you can install rust normally of course) and pi hole with its whopping 2700 lines of shell script.
Un1corn··on I/O is no longer the bottleneck
Does someone have a comparison between common server ssds and consumer ssds? I wonder if the speed is equal or not
Un1corn··on Fosstodon Hub – More Upgrades
You are always welcome to use the opportunity and start a competing service in a fraction of the cost. Mastodon is indeed inefficient but you also pay a lot for peace of mind.
Un1corn··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
I'm using Firefox but if you are that paranoid you should be using Chrome. Firefox is a child play compared to Chrome in term of security (but not privacy).
Un1corn··on Apple Execs on iMessage for Android (2013)
As always, it's important to remember that people choice of messaging depends on network effect more than anything else.

But even without it, they are both E2E encrypted. Of course you could ship new code that send the messages unencrypted but it would be extremely risky for Meta and the government, depending on the target

Un1corn··on Hardware-accelerated Linux virtual machines on jailbroken iPhone 12 / iOS 14.1
Samsung DeX feels like a POC, sure it works and I've used it for about a week while my laptop was being repaired but it had lots of paper cuts, most applications were out of place, even some of their own.
Un1corn··on Why I Like Java (2014)
I'm really not sure I would call Java's standard library comprehensive. I've only worked with it for a few months but needed many Apache commons libraries.
Un1corn··on Nearly a third of TV ads play to empty rooms
It was in Black Mirror. IIRC he was surrounded with screens in his room and was forced to watch ads
Un1corn··on Apple removes Python 2.7 in macOS 12.3 beta
Actually RedHat no longer ships Python since RHEL 8, instead they have platform-python for internal use of the operating system and you need to explicitly install the Python version you want
Un1corn··on Systemd service sandboxing and security hardening (2020)
The correct Systemd solution would be to create a socket unit but your solutions works without modifying the service code
Un1corn··on Google said it had successfully ‘slowed down’ European privacy rules
Just like before there were targeted ads?
Un1corn··on OpenHistoricalMap
OSM is showing what's on the ground so there are no dotted lines like with Google Maps. For example both the Golan Heights and East Jerusalem will be shown as part of Israel because it is the de facto ruler of those areas.
Un1corn··on Helix: a post-modern modal text editor
I found a nice solution to this with an MMO mouse. I have a Logitech G600 with 12 keys on the side and I mapped them to my most common operations like opening and closing tabs or moving between workspaces.
Un1corn··on Israel’s lucrative and secretive cybersurveillance industry
Selling services for democracies that will use it for counter terrorism? There are legitimate use for offensive cyber security
Un1corn··on Disqus, a dark commenting system
>it will lose most of its paying users to a more ethical competitor as soon as someone bothers to read the ToS

So never? People don't read the ToS and certainly don't judge services by it. It seems people have come to accept surveillance capitalism as a fact of life

Un1corn··on Element (Matrix chat app) suspended from the Google Play Store
I'm not sure how Linphone is doing it but all the apps I used that required to run in the background were required to show a notification at all time.

This is a terrible UX, my notification center is useless because I always have those apps in there (KDEConnect and Syncthing for example)
