UpsideDownRide··on Hungary: Communist-era files released, up to 60k former agents revealed
Capitalism isn't pretty. Soviet style communism is even worse.
UpsideDownRide··on Hungary: Communist-era files released, up to 60k former agents revealed
What do you even mean. There were literal soviet troops stationed. Czech Republic and Hungary had tanks rolling in during dissent attempts.

Being caught planning against the puppet regimes meant death early on, gulags bit later on. So some people did conform, can't be expecting everyone to want to sacrifice their lives instead of trying to survive.

As soon as USSR collapsed Eastern Europe started moving away from the Russian system. Not in a spotless manner but what else do you really need to see that the system was imposed from outside?

UpsideDownRide··on 'It's just vape, nail, charity shops': Can anything save UK high street?
Land and real estate is not unlimited especially in urban areas. Building companies optimize for profit so they don't have a good incentive to build out public necessities. It will be always a bit of squaring a circle if you want half sensible area development.

Maybe some amount of central planning wouldn't be bad? Maybe when it's broad strokes designations of public space usage and not how many toilet paper rolls one gets it can be a net benefit?
UpsideDownRide··on Postgres 19 is late because so many more bugs are being found now
Luddites were actually pretty reasonable when you dig into it. Maybe shouldn't be using it as an insult?
UpsideDownRide··on Norway makes shithouses great again
Because it's somehow easier to kill the private companies instead of public ones? Show us.
UpsideDownRide··on Social dynamics of toxic metal industry in medieval Europe
If you get attacked by a nuclear state there is nit mucb you can do but attack back. Unless you want to roll over and give up.

Turns out some countries are sufficiently shit that it's worth the risk.

UpsideDownRide··on MPs moving to restrict gambling ads in Canada
I was addicted to hard drugs. When in therapy I've met people there for gambling addiction. The takeout lesson was that for some people it is basically the same as stimulants. They had the same issues, fucked up their lives just as much.

So yeah it is on the scale of advertising meth.

UpsideDownRide··on Ask HN: If the models are so good, why doesn't OpenAI just start 100 companies?
Ever is such a strong word.
UpsideDownRide··on AI was great until it was not
I feel like people are trapping themselves with LLM use patterns. As OP has noted it's a pretty damn good self tutor tool, it's also great for offloading tasks you don't care about. But it will be devastating when people use it to do the important things foe them instead.

Potential bright side is that those people that will put in actual work and learn how to use AI as a complement and not replacement should have sizeable competitive advantage. LLMs are still dumb af in many ways.

UpsideDownRide··on Smart people don't think others are stupid (2012)
And what exactly is intelligence. Because there are many aspects to usual understanding of it and ability in each of them can vary quite a bit, even though there is some transfer (and it even has a name).

And then the issue of innateness, there is so much interplay with education both formal and informal, socioeconomic status, diet, emotional state, and myriad other things that it turns out pretty quickly that it's hard to say how kuch each part contributes.

It gets pretty murky fast once you start being careful when reasoning about this.

UpsideDownRide··on Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men
Ukraine is provided with tech, weapons intelligence, and all kinds of equipment. You are spewing nonsense.
UpsideDownRide··on Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men
Have you considered that Boris could understand the situation better than you? People thinking that Russia can honor deals just baffle me.
UpsideDownRide··on Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men
There is no such thing as neutrality. If Ukraine cannot align with west it will mean they will be forced to be under Russia.
UpsideDownRide··on Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men
You seem to think that if Ukraine gives up all will be good. That Russia will play nice, try not to subjugate Ukraine fully Belarus style.

As long as Ukraine wants to be free they don't have much choice since Russia is what it is.

UpsideDownRide··on Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men
No. It was Russias inability to accept sovereignty of Ukraine. How is that hard to comprehend?
UpsideDownRide··on Where is all the new, good software?
Yeah same, getting hyper personal tooling for myself.
UpsideDownRide··on AI is a tool and using it well takes skill
I'm walking as my primary mode of transport. Am abke to drive, live in city centre can reach my common destinations by foot. Public transportat for things bit further away. Car at low to mid distances is more hassle than it's worth due to parking.
UpsideDownRide··on Cyberattack halts construction of tunnel between Denmark and Germany
Rich Ukrainians are mostly beneficiaries of corrupt Russian system. You dont remove such things overnight, all countries that were in Soviet orbit have hiccups due to that to this day.

At the same time it's clear that it's not hopeless for those nations that choose to do something about it. Which is it for Ukraine remains to be seen. They are doing the correct first steo though. So there is that.

UpsideDownRide··on A look at the math that OpenAI claims computes faster Fourier transforms
Dudeee how far up your hind do you need to be to nit even appreciate the groundwork being laid out?

Like imagine Einstein without access to geometry work. You had others point you to number theory. What about Boole's algebra.

There is a pretty big list of seemingly useless pure math things suddenly finding a very practical use. Sometimes quite a bit later too. And we have no way of knowing beforehand.

And it's fine to not want to do such work yourself. But to dismiss it is, well, not very thoughtful.

UpsideDownRide··on AI models can provably hide arbitrary capabilities
The paragons of virtue.
UpsideDownRide··on AI Models Can Provably Hide Arbitrary Capabilities
From all of them? No probably not. From select few? Pretty possible.

Navier Stokes drama shows you how closed model company is not necessarily aligned to all customers.

UpsideDownRide··on Deloitte falsified documents to evade tax on Abramovich's wealth
They had me watch some nonsense on integrity as part of the training.

All the while we were doing financial regulation software without any proper tests on the models being done outside of some spot checks.

And the idea of doing those was frowned upon :)

Lovely place.

UpsideDownRide··on Claude Code’s suggested message feature: I think the real customer is the model
Maybe the silver lining will be the collapse of the market, hardware being accesible again and we can just run local models.

A man can dream, right?

Fully agree. There is so much customization that I'm doing thanks to LLMs that I just wouldnt to bother to do by myself.

UpsideDownRide··on NAND-16: a computer built from 277,248 NAND gates
It's like Elon paying someone to place on an arpg ladder. Or like driving a car to civer the marathon distance.

There is something being done in both cases but it aint the thing.

Mind you there is nothing inherently wrong in using LLMs. The issue is when trying to pass it as your own output.
