VectorLock··on No-more-secrets: recreate the decryption effect seen in the 1992 movie Sneakers
I love glorifying doing things the hard way as much as the next guy, but the fact is dependencies are a way of life.

We build on the shoulders of giants. We pull in other peoples code because we don't want to duplicate work, ours is likely not to be as good, any code is a liability, and sometimes _we just aint got time for that._

VectorLock··on Kevin Mitnick has died
I miss Adrian, looking at this picture now gives me a wistful feeling https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lamo-Mitnick-Poulsen... Hope Kevin Poulsen is doing okay tonight.
VectorLock··on LazyVim
I don't think using GitHub is a prerequisite for using Copilot but I could be wrong.
VectorLock··on Exploring Linear A
Probably getting a bit more popular notice after the mention in the latest Indiana Jones movie (at least, they mentioned Linear B a few times)
VectorLock··on LazyVim
But it has to use your code for inferencing, doesn't it? So it is sending it to someone.

I see this being a blocker at a lot of places. I know in my workplace the infosec people are apoplectic about it and we supposedly have a 'partnership' with OpenAI.

VectorLock··on How to register a Kei truck in Pennsylvania
Cars are pretty much the defacto status item in the US, so it makes sense for people to want to "fake it til they make it."
VectorLock··on Discord is not documentation
geeksforgeeks.org is really dark pattern-y, and has been extremely high ranking for python related questions that seemed to come out of nowhere.
VectorLock··on Effect of perceptual load on performance within IDE in people with ADHD symptoms
Every few years I go through the exercise of thinking "Oh <some IDE> has some cool features, maybe I'll try using it" and that ends quickly when I get annoyed by the clutter and lack of efficiency in operations and go back to vim-- even IDEs that have "vim mode." Even adding IDE like features to vim I quickly dump because I feel like they get in my way.
VectorLock··on Bard’s latest update: more features, languages and countries
I feel the same kind of hesitation. For example I'd like to try the Google Cloud Vision API but what if Google starts to think I'm violating copyright or something and nukes my gmail account? If I create a new account and use the same card I pay for Google One would it then correlate them and nuke them both?

Google has definitely saved money not having a support system staffed with actual real people, but have they quantified how much it's hurt their business vis a vis customer mistrust thinking that if something happens they'll be stonewalled by Google's inhuman bureaucracy?

VectorLock··on We put a distributed database in the browser and made a game of it
Out of curiosity what did you use to write the graphical part of this game?
VectorLock··on Container Training
Every programming language had its own version of jars, dependency management, etc. that you then need to reproduce everywhere you want those things to run. Containers mostly abstract that away - you just have a container image filled with what you want and you execute it. It also provides a consistent means of isolation. Thats the benefit I see.
VectorLock··on Beautifying our UI: Giving Gitlab build features a fresh look
You can see a trail of half-baked and forgotten features, like Runbooks.
VectorLock··on Backend of Meta Threads is built with Python 3.10
That seems like pretty much the perfect way to go about things. Kudos on that work!
VectorLock··on Tesla Fleet Telemetry
Which brands did you try and how much did you try them?
VectorLock··on Tesla Fleet Telemetry
That was the first thing I thought of when I saw this post and read the code a bit.

Also fuck the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for telling auto makers to ignore a very well intentioned state law.

VectorLock··on Buying an iPad Pro for coding was a mistake
MacBookPros have been pretty much for the past decade+ the undisputed leader of rugged hardware design. Nobody else to my knowledge sells machined unibody laptops at a competitive price point. (Only half jokingly posting this hoping somebody can't help to attempt to prove me wrong)
VectorLock··on Gorilla-CLI: LLMs for CLI including K8s/AWS/GCP/Azure/sed and 1500 APIs
Is it weird I'm kind of more interested in this included "go_questionary" library?
VectorLock··on Pixel fucked: Inside Hollywood's VFX crisis
This is why you always see bald faced attempts by HR departments to generate "passionate employees."
VectorLock··on Monitoring Is a Pain
>pull model metrics is an antipattern

While I agree there are a lot of Prometheus people who would disagree.

VectorLock··on A single line of code made a 24-core server slower than a laptop (2021)
This is what I'd describe as the deepest of the deep magic.
VectorLock··on NHTSA tells automakers not to comply with Massachusetts right-to-repair law
Was just buying a new Toyota thats supposed to be delivered in about a month and was thinking about how to hit them with the "So about that new law..."
VectorLock··on ArchiveTeam has saved over 11.2B Reddit links
People seem to forget that the subreddits they create or moderate don't actually belong to them, they belong to Reddit Inc.
VectorLock··on 460-foot “battery tanker” set to ship electrons by 2026
Using all of its internal battery for propulsion I wonder how far it could go.
VectorLock··on The death of self-driving cars is greatly exaggerated
Seems to be the unfortunate progression of almost every potentially transformative technology.
VectorLock··on The death of self-driving cars is greatly exaggerated
"Adequate" is an interesting choice of a word when describing something's safety record.
VectorLock··on Git is simply too hard
Thats what 95% of people are doing with git but the fact that git has so much more complexity built into it to get to those simple operations is what the author is talking about. Although that tech is cool, it does have a lot of complications.
VectorLock··on DESKTOP2 – A Graphical User Interface for DOS
I love this user testimonial in particular...

>i love your gui!!! it's great! my only problem is that i can't read german so i am forced to navigate using either trial-and-error or my trusty german-english dictionary (which is not well equipped at translating computer jargon!!) anyway, this is probably a lost cause and i understand you not wanting to go through all the hassel of translating it -- i was just wondering!! but all the same, great job!! it's a wonderful piece of software!!

VectorLock··on Health officials delayed report linking fluoride to brain harm
Thats a very HN opinion. Sometimes people pick careers for factors other than how interesting they are.
VectorLock··on Health officials delayed report linking fluoride to brain harm
Its kind of hilarious to picture what a new born baby taking in the amount of water a 200 lb man would in a day.

And of course "overexposed" is exactly the dose that fits their narrative.

I'm suspect they'd also have an opinion about not showering as much to not absorb the flouride through their skin.

VectorLock··on Illinois to Become First State to Ban Book Bans
Yes, banning and teaching are definitely the same thing.
