VectorLock··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
I find it super interesting that Apple is x-raying the PCBs for their compute nodes. Guess they took Supermicro inserting malicious devices into their servers very seriously.
VectorLock··on Extracting AI models from mobile apps
Excellent introduction to some cool tools I wasn't aware of!
VectorLock··on Engineer eats efficiently for $2.50 a day (2016)
Processed or ultra-processed?

It looks to me like the majority of the things made started unprocessed (cabbage, pork shoulder, salmon, lettuce, chicken, bananas, eggs), some was processed (mayo, tortillas, white bread, flour) with only a smattering of ultra-processed (brownie mix, campbell's tomato soup, blue cheese dressing)

"We cut cancer research and will replace all government vehicles with Teslas. Ez!"

And suddenly wanting to "find yourself" when you don't need the support any more.

Sounds like a pretty shitty person. To some people, loyalty counts for nothing.

VectorLock··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
What they're going to end up cutting (and have) is children cancer research and infectious disease teams. Such "excessive waste!"

There is no upper bound on how much debt the US gov can carry as long as they're paying their interest and people still have trust that they will. Its the TRUST part that is at most risk right now.
VectorLock··on How I got promoted to staff engineer twice
"Staff" is the new "Senior."
VectorLock··on Building Game Prototypes with LÖVE
MOONRING too which is another really fun game, although one that hasn't yet gone as mainstream as Balatro.

There is so much "draw the rest of the Owl" between a very primitive framework like LÖVE and stylistic games like BALATRO and MOONRING.

VectorLock··on Elon Musk wanted an OpenAI for-profit
I'm curious why they ended up focusing on DOTA. Prize money? Valve make the game particular amenable to machine interface?
VectorLock··on Elon Musk wanted an OpenAI for-profit
I found all the discussions about Dota pretty amusing. I had no idea it was such a big thing for them early on.

Yeah and Mars is a shitty place to live. And will always be a shitty place to live. No amount of fantastical "terraforming" is going to create a magnetosphere.
VectorLock··on Mysterious New Jersey drone sightings prompt call for 'state of emergency'
The linkage system is pretty cool I will say that.

VectorLock··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
Interesting I never heard of ED meds of that nature described like more addictive drugs where "you take one freebie and you're coming back for more." Why don't people get them OTC instead of on the black market? Are you from a place where they're more illicit?
VectorLock··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
Viagra/Cialis or something else?

VectorLock··on Rivian is opening its charging network to other EVs
Tanks are cheap. Land for them, and digging, are not.

Employees are needed because most places require gas stations to be manned. Unless you're talking Bucee's they're not making much from selling a few drinks, they're just making marginal use of the building.

VectorLock··on Rivian is opening its charging network to other EVs
>High speed chargers can cost >$200k installed. >A gas pump costs about $25k installed.

These numbers seem skewed to me. I think you're quoting prices for gas pumps with just the pump, not any storage infrastructure like underground tanks, stores, employees. Then you're quoting the cost high speed chargers without any kind of electrical infrastructure to support them, which would be expensive, but more analogous to including the cost of all the other infrastructure for gas stations as well.

VectorLock··on The Opposite of Documentation is Superstition (2020)
Someone at work recently introduced a thing that would create git commit messages from code, completely negating the necessity of the programmer to provide accurate not-contained-in-code context. If they weren't across an ocean I would have shook them by the shoulders until they understood.
VectorLock··on The Opposite of Documentation is Superstition (2020)
>In fact, "superstition" very neatly defines most prompt engineering for LLMs.

Its weirdly fascinating how this is developing. Like some people boldly claiming that if you offer to tip your LLM it does better. And if you say things like "Think hard and check your work" it gives more accurate results.

VectorLock··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
Super cute game!

BTW I think you misspelt "Weilding."

I suppose you can still brag "I climbed Everest" to people without any experience climbing Everest if you just go to base camp.
