VectorLock··on OpenAI negotiations to reinstate Altman hit snag over board role
What's up with these guys not using capital letters?
VectorLock··on The Pixel 8 Pro's Tensor G3 off-loads all generative AI tasks to the cloud
Not that surprising really when you consider where the companies come from and what their other major successes are.
VectorLock··on Brian Bucklew Porting Caves of Qud from Unity to Godot
Yeah I'd love to see how he goes about achieving the COQ signature look in Godot.
VectorLock··on Brian Bucklew Porting Caves of Qud from Unity to Godot
COQ applies a while bunch of stylistic appliques to the "console" look that may not be possible or at least easy in other game engines.
VectorLock··on Samsung unveils monobloc heat pump for residential applications
Millions of people have counter top ice makers in their home that use propane as a refrigerant. If you have a gas line that brings gas to your stove, having a heat pump circulate that same gas as a refrigerant isn't much of a stretch. Especially if its replacing a gas boiler.
VectorLock··on Show HN: Alaz: Open-Source, Self-Hosted, eBPF-Based K8s Monitoring
Does it generate the Service Map from eBPF traces too? Can you use the Service Map without k8s?
VectorLock··on Show HN: I automated half of my typing
Its fun watching mouse users try to use a trackball. I don't like pair programming but when people ask me to I say sure just so I can see them flail with a trackball and Kinesis keyboard.
VectorLock··on Show HN: I automated half of my typing
hri kri: the act of disemvoweling oneself.
VectorLock··on Show HN: I automated half of my typing
Combine this with a chording keyboard for ultimate high speed operator status.
VectorLock··on Total data loss after botched GitOps and failed backups
Sp they were manually doing a backup and then testing that backup, rather than testing their automated backups? If thats what they were doing that just makes me wonder... why?
VectorLock··on Python proposal (inspired by Lua)
I'm guessing someone got inspired by https://adamj.eu/tech/2021/05/11/python-type-hints-args-and-...

IMHO mixing args and kwargs together like this - having a dict with mixed types for keys - looks kinda grotty.

VectorLock··on Factorio: Space Age
Interesting that at the end they had to pitch how their own first party game expansion is better than a existing mod.
VectorLock··on 50TB IBM tape drive more than doubles LTO-9 capacity
This was before the introduction of the much lauded "Middle Out" compression.
VectorLock··on Runme – Interactive Runbooks Built with Markdown
Seems like a pretty good idea for a simple project, but when wrapped in yet another fly by night SaaS venture I think I'll pass.
VectorLock··on DOJ sues SpaceX for discriminating against asylees and refugees in hiring
I probably have to take training classes every year as a hiring manager about what I can and cannot ask in the hiring process, and not asking citizenship and anything beyond "Are you eligible to work in the US?" I forsee a bunch of these training classes in SpaceX's future.
VectorLock··on DOJ sues SpaceX for discriminating against asylees and refugees in hiring
Just to be extra careful.
VectorLock··on DOJ sues SpaceX for discriminating against asylees and refugees in hiring
Thankfully being "extra careful" isn't a defense against breaking employment law.
VectorLock··on Screen Apnea
I don't think you can go all the way to suffocating from it. Even people with severe sleep apnea in very deep sleep will still be roused awake by their brains when their oxygen levels get very low.
VectorLock··on Google engineer earns $150K works 1 hr/day, spends rest of time on his startup
Yeah the startup part is not important, its all the other stuff, but thanks explaining what a startup is/isn't.
VectorLock··on Google engineer earns $150K works 1 hr/day, spends rest of time on his startup
No, they don't care to own most people's weekend projects. They wouldn't have any claim on that anyways.

But when someone is spending the time Google pays for to work on a startup, I would THINK they would care about that. Or maybe Google's internal processes is okay with them doing 1 hr/day of work "as long as they're getting done whats expected of them."

VectorLock··on Google engineer earns $150K works 1 hr/day, spends rest of time on his startup
Being proven in court is all well and good until Google jams you up in the case for so long and costs you so much for lawyers they effectively torpedo your startup.

He's effectively banking that Google will be so big they won't notice - just like only working 1 hour per day.

VectorLock··on Google engineer earns $150K works 1 hr/day, spends rest of time on his startup
Its all fun and games until Google decides they own your startup since you were working on it during "their time."
VectorLock··on Google engineer earns $150K works 1 hr/day, spends rest of time on his startup
>as one Google exec directly described it to me, have people inside the tent pissing out rather that outside the tent pissing in

I'm having trouble trying to parse the meaning of this metaphor.

VectorLock··on Compuserve
I think I was on Prodigy a little bit before BBS' then after the BBS era began to wain it was dialup PPP (then a hacked PPP server at MIT), and shell systems.
VectorLock··on Compuserve
Compuserve was too hard to get into, but Prodigy... that was my jam.
VectorLock··on Textual: Rapid Application Development framework for Python
Even to execute the most minimal binary fork/execve takes a not insignificant amount of time. Thats one of the reasons why CGI fell by the wayside.
VectorLock··on Dirty downside of 'return to office'; ending WFH could make climate crisis worse
Heating and cooling office buildings AND heating and cooling homes is less efficient than just heating and cooling homes. Many people aren't stopping heating/cooling their homes when they leave, or just reduce it, or don't do it at all since there are still other people in the home.
VectorLock··on Textual: Rapid Application Development framework for Python
If he think's CGI startup time is acceptable then I guess maybe PHP seems fast then?
VectorLock··on Textual: Rapid Application Development framework for Python
There are some good reasons that everything, PHP and Python included, moved away from CGI to long-running processes.
VectorLock··on Textual: Rapid Application Development framework for Python
Compare and contrast your operating system, and how many files and breaking updates that gets.
